5.0 out of 5 starsDear Downton ... What's not to love ??
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 June 2022
As soon as the intro started with the music I felt this wave of comforting familiarity & I smiled ... It made me happy ... It's one of the few series I can watch with my Gran & my Mummy & we did exactly that this Sunday evening ... I'm not going to sit & pull apart every little thing & be super critical as I might with some films ... Why? ... because I'm a realist & basically ... I got exactly what I expected ... Downton Abbey's last 'Hurrah' in all its splendour & with all its flaws ... Bags of nostalgia with fun, laughs, little bits of comedy with one or two eye rolling moments of silliness ... poignant moments tinged with sadness & joyful happy times too ... A great balance ... & of course our favourite characters we'd missed & were so very happy to see again ... Was it perfect ? No it wasn't ... but that didn't matter at all because it was 'perfect' for us ... It tied our wonderful dear Downton & everything in it, up in a lovely big posh bow as an era ends ... For Downton fans everywhere it leaves us with fond memories & made (most) of us ... for a couple of hours ... VERY HAPPY indeed ... Isn't that what we need these days?

3.0 out of 5 starsTired and on its last legs
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 June 2022
I know Downton has been a huge moneyspinner over the years, but I think this latest film was one too many. The characters have become caricatures of themselves, and the actors are going through the motions with little conviction and very wooden acting. Lady Mary is as expressionless as ever, and appears to have mislaid her racing driver husband, who doesn't appear at all. The egalitarian Crawleys , who have already welcomed their Fenian chauffeur into the family as husband to their youngest daughter, now deceased, plus an illegitimate child of their second eldest, Lady Edith, don't turn a hair when said ex-son-in-law now marries the illegitimate daughter, formerly posing as the lady's maid, of a wealthy neighbour. Now we are treated to an even more absurd plot in which the legitimacy of the Earl himself is called into question when his mama inherits a palatial villa in the South of France from a former admirer. In that family, one would have thought they would take yet another possible illegitimacy in their stride, or possibly, actually ask the Dowager for the truth of the matter, but no, that would be too easy. So off they go to the S.of France, via a CGI cross channel ferry and , supposedly, the Blue Train, but the budget clearly didn't run to a restored Pulllman car. In the S.of France, nothing much happens at all, but we meet a furious French widow and her son, who is only too delighted to hand over the villa, including the furnishings, and embrace his putative 'brother". Back at Downton, a silent film company are renting the place and providing much needed cash to repair the roof. Judging by the huge wedding cake style Cannes villa, just selling that would have more than recouped the cost, without filling up Downton with actors. That is of course the joke - Highclere Castle ( Downton) filled up with 21st cntury actors pretending to be 1920s aristocrats and servants appalled by the idea of having vulgar actors in their home, but secretly rather enjoying the whole thing. I wish I had enjoyed the film as much as the cast evidently enjoyed making it. But the saga is now tired, and on its last legs, like the Dowager Lady Crawley, rather than entering a new era. Maggie Smith, who was always the best thing about Downton, naturally gets the best line at the end.

2.0 out of 5 stars Downton goes Hollywood

First impressions of this film was oh dear the big budget and american flamboyance has made this iconic series tacky and felt like switching off after the first five minutes, but I thought I would give it the benefit of the doubt and continue watching. It got better as the film progressed and kept my attention until a certain romantic scene with Lady Mary, I won't say anymore about the scene as not to spoil it for anyone but it did not fit her character at all. I suppose if this scene was portrayed in the tv series the circumstance would have developed over weeks and this being a film didn't have the time to build up the storyline. In the end the film was sort of enjoyable but it lacked character, if you had never seen Downton Abbey before you would think it was a poor portrayal of the period and social classes. The film production made the Grantham's seem like pompous, bungling idiots and the whole thing was how americans see the British. The overseas scene's portrayed Lord Grantham as insecure, selfish and somewhat cold hearted. Was it worth the rental price? My wife would say yes, personally I say a very definite no. I was a fan of the series and looked forward to each episode and feel disappointed that probably the last we will ever see of Downton Abbey is this poor portrayal of what was an excellent tv series. Instead of going out with a bang, it belly flopped.

Content of the video:
Normally the Downton Abbey series is just how you thought the family lived, this latest video seemed to have every character you have ever seen on at Downton on one set, almost all the plots were predictable, thought the scene where every one in service played an extras was over the top.
So many of the characters had sun tans, which did not fit in with that era.
Do not waste your money buying the video.

2.0 out of 5 stars Story OK for TV but not a movie.

Obviously made after the actors had all been sunning themselves during lockdown as they're all tanned before they get to the Riviera.
A highly convoluted story to send half the cast to France and keep the remainder in the UK.
As far as plotline, the UK story is a direct steal from Singing in the Rain regarding the progression from silent films to talkies.
The South of France storyline could have been interesting, but this is Downton and everything is all resolved quickly amicably and any questions neatly resolved.
Sad that Henry (Matthew Goode) wasn't in it. They may as well left Mary a widow and let her have some lovers.
Beautiful costumes. Beautiful locations.
Overall, way too saccharine sweet, too convoluted and it felt rushed (especially Lady Violet's scenes). All threads were neatly tied off.
Should have been a TV special not a film.
Waste of £15.99.

2.0 out of 5 stars A convoluted wrap

It was nice to meet all the characters again, but the contrived plotting rather made them all into caricatures. Some great one-liners as anticipated - (spoiler alert) such as Lord Grantham to his mother on her death bed: "I'm not as intelligent as you...! His mother: "I know..."

A bit too post-moderne in its film within a film about making a film while filming a film about making a film suffused with pre-union "I'll do the voice" and "I'll stand in" and -- my personal favorite -- "I'll write the script" can-do silliness. I mean, if the director wasn't even getting funds to pay the extras, how in tarnation was he ever gonna pay the location fees for a new roof????

Nice clothes, as usual.
