Poorly written, pedestrian prose, I did finish the book but was not surprised to find it was self published; it was evident no competent copy editor had had a go at it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Scilly Isles
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 April 2022
This was a sweet, summery story that tells the romantic tale of how love is tested by distance. Noah and Keira are based in Bristol but it soon becomes clear that Noah’s home is on the Isle of Scilly. Determined for their relationship to work long-distance, neither are very good at maintaining a strong face and desperately miss one another.

Noah and Keira’s relationship comes about as a result of her best friend, Mel, and her interfering ways. Although she looks out for her friend, I can’t say I completely liked Mel and her behaviour. At times I thought she crossed the friendship line, becoming too immersed in Keira’s affairs when it would have been best for her to stay out of it. Likewise, there were some personality traits of Keira and Noah I disliked and this lessened my enjoyment of the novel. There were times when I shuddered at their selfish, sometimes catty attitudes and I wanted them to wake up and realise they did not have a positive attitude.

Not only is this book about Noah and Keira’s relationship, but the setting of the Islands of Scilly and each other’s background becomes rather significant. Firstly, I loved the idyllic coastline that Ellis describes and it encouraged me to search the location online for myself. It looks as beautiful as it was described! The coastline and remote countryside sounded awesome and I could not help but picture sunny afternoons in peace and quiet. I could see why it pulled Noah back from Bristol.

Secondly, the theme of family proves an influencing element to both Noah and Keira. For Noah, it turns out that him and his brothers have responded to their father’s sudden death in very different ways. I was intrigued by a couple of Noah’s brothers and wanted them to feature more in the story. However, with so many siblings, I guess this can provide a solid foundation for books later in the series. I found Noah’s emotional side to be interesting and I think this added depth to his character, although I would have liked there to be further scenes with his mother as Noah deals with his grief.

Similarly, Keira is shaped by the relationship she has with her parents. I cringed at the scenes with her mother and father and truly sympathised with Keira. At the same time, I wanted her to prove herself stronger and less naïve about what was going on. It takes comments from Noah, interference from Mel and a bit of growing from Keira for her to realise the reality of her parents’ relationship with her. There is a happy conclusion for this part of the story and I think this reflected how much Keira has changed as a result of her relationship with Noah.

This is a sweet story and I am intrigued to find out more about Noah’s family and his best friend, Serena. It wasn’t the most exciting and I did find it start to slow down when Noah moved back to Scilly. However, I did enjoy the sweetness of the romance and I look forward to seeing what happens next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 April 2022
Keira and friend Mel have been popping in their local Bristol pub for a few months now, and while they have good banter with the barman Noah it hasn't gone much further. That changes when Mel provides a little intervention as she sees that Noah and Keira obviously like each other.

This was a fabulous book that I only planned on reading a few chapters of, and I ended up reading the whole book over the course of an evening, Yep another late-night reading!

The signs that Mel could see between Noah and Keira were not wrong and the two soon start to find that there is a real attraction. One problem though, Noah is due to return back home to the Isles of Scilly. Does he really want to start a relationship?

When Kiera realises that this relationship will be hard to continue she tries to do the best thing, trying not to get to attached, but this isn't possible. The attraction and the easy way the two have with each other are natural and effortless. Noah decides that he will invite Keira to his home and meet his family.

There is a lot more to this story than romance and friendship. Both Keira and Noah have things that hold them back, they have very different families. His is a larger family and her very small. the differences and the backstories gradually come out and this makes for some wonderful heart to heart moments and also for admitting truths.

The other characters in this book are brilliant and I am so glad to see that this is the first book in a planned series. I cannot wait to see what lies in store for two characters that will be the focus of the next book!

This was a gorgeous read and it was nice to see the Isles of Scilly being shown off, I still have to visit there and I will one day, I do live in Cornwall after all.

This is definitely one for those who like contemporary fiction, romance and stories about family and friendships. I loved it and I would definitely recommend it.

The Weekend Getaway by Hannah Ellis
(Isles of Scilly Book One)
A weekend break changes everything.
The chemistry between Keira and Noah is instant. However, it only takes one date for Keira to realise something special between them.
When Noah invites her to a family party in his hometown, she eagerly agrees, and by the end of their weekend away, she's head over heels. Not only for Noah but for his close-knit family and the stunning Isles of Scilly.
There's just one problem: Noah's about to move back home, and his plans can't be altered.
It's too early in their relationship to make life-changing plans, but if they stand a chance of being together, one of them will have to take a leap of faith.
Can love triumph over location? And when following your heart, how far should you go?
The Weekend Getaway is the 6th novel I have read by Hannah Ellis. I enjoy her work, and it has such an effortless feel, so it makes for a wonderfully easy read.
This novel is about finding your ideal companion. Placed in such a beautiful part of the world, with a terrific cast of characters, this story is a well-written, touching tale full of tenderness, friendship, family, love, trust and romance.
I am looking forward to reading book two in this series, 'A Change of Heart', which is out later this year.
I am happy to recommend it.
