5.0 out of 5 starsA Batman film for grown-ups (15 certificate)...

Like many others I had doubts about Robert Pattinson taking over the icon role of The Batman - my only memories of him were from Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire and the first Twilight film (I didn't bother with the rest that series), and obviously he's been in work for the last 20 years but nothing to really draw my attention. Then I saw Tenet and thought "Actually, he could play James Bond now" and having seen The Batman I'm now convinced he could play either role. Physically he's not as imposing as Bale or Affleck but this is a Batman in the early stages of his "career", a youngish man who's finding his way but he's already known of and distrusted by the police, his initial appearance at a crime scene being met with both derision and fascination.

The Batman takes its lead from 2019's Joker in that it's more grounded in reality than most superhero movies, it's a dark film (in all senses), there are brutal fights and the obligatory car chase (the sound of the Batmobile sounded amazing at my local IMAX!) but this is not a film for young children, not necessarily for the level of violence but more for the motives of the crimes committed - we're not talking freeze ray guns here. It's three hours long so prepare for the long haul, settle down and enjoy - they don't make big budget movies for grown-ups like this very often.

Sorry to say it bit please DONT RUSH OUT & BUY THIS, comparing it to the previous version of batman it doesn't hold any grounds..... there's very little action, very little drama, very little anything

Batmobile you see once as per clips in the car chase, nothing more except some static shots etc.

Bat bike, "kinda" you see at the end & nothing more

Fight scenes literally 2-3 pretty quick & nothing special, even the end sequence isn't special & is over before you've blinked an eye...

Sorry to say it, I'd say ppl should wait until the price is massively reduced or the films released on national TV ie free to watch.

All the reviews etc make out it's something new & exciting etc yes its new but it's lacking literally in everything we all love, want to see.... in part "as a whole" this could easily be compared to a low budget detective film, however the low budget compared film would win as there's more detective working going on..

My only hope is, if there's a 2nd the director, writer etc produce a real batman film rather then this shocking example of "I really don't know what"

Also if this is supposed to be a batman, from the grass routes beginning why does he have a very large storage facility, a pretty advanced jet powered vehicle & other none low tech, basic equipment "even if rich etc" batman is supposed to have manufactured this himself with Alfred etc... it seems contradictory itself... however batman begins you see & are made aware of how, what etc he goes around making, producing/obtaining these items..

The only aspect I really enjoyed was the cinema photography & capturing all of the bats events are during the night, unlike the precious revamp batman where it failed by having batman exposed in broad daylight.
Ps yes I fell asleep before the film finished & I began watching the film around 21:30 at night

I'll add more as it comes to me, maybe after a 2nd viewing.. yes its that good I've watched it once & once only.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark, gritty and Unique one of the best Batman films yet!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 March 2022
Saw this film on its release day in the cinema. Now whilst I won't claim the film is perfect because it isn't (perhaps a tiny but too long, few pacing issues in final 3rd of the film), it is honestly perhaps the perfect Batman film however. The film is incredibly dark and gritty and it's refreshing to see the studio allowed the film to be made this way instead of insisting on cuts to make it a 12a they accepted the 15 age rating and the film
definitely deserves it; this is not a film for kids. It has a distinct horror element to certain scenes and the riddler proves to be an unsettling and disturbing villain (Paul Dano's performance is amazing) who gives distinct Serial Killer vibes along the likes of films such as the zodiac killer or Seven.

I had my doubts about Robert Pattinson as Batman but I completely take them all back. He really does excel in the role and I have to say I love the new suit. Zoe Kravitz is great as catwoman and Jeffry Wright is amazing as Lieutenant James Gordon -you really see the relationship he has with Batman and how they get along, almost like Batman is his partner in the force.

One of the best aspects about this film is that it really does address the Worlds Greatest Detective aspects of Batman's character, its early in his career so he isn't quite there yet but this really is an aspect of him that is missing in other films. Don't get me wrong I love The Dark Knight Trillogy Christopher Nolan created but alot if the time Bruce Wayne comes across as being the thickest person in the room however here you frequently do get the vibe that he is the smartest person in the room and he knows what he is doing. The cinematography is great and the Soundtrack is fantastic. I shan't say much more except to reiterate this really isn't a movie for children, it'd incredibly dark and despite being 3 hours long I need more! I can't wait to see what they so with the Spin off Arkham Asylum tv series aswell as The penguin series and Gotham P.D. show. I just hope they wins up doing more than 3 films as there are so many Batmam Villains I'd love to see this Batman face off against!

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm vengeance

I have just come back from the cinema having watched it for a second time. I'm going to be honest I did not have high expectations for this film. Possibly because I am a loyal Batman comic fanboy and not ashamed to admit it - but then I have my gripes with all the adaptations not just this one.

The first time I watched this film I actually didn't enjoy it as much, I felt the film was maybe 30 mins too long and the end kind of dragged out a bit, perhaps not enough action towards the end but I loved how faithful it was to the source material so I thought I would give it another chance to redeem itself and I really enjoyed it more thee second time around. I put my gripes and fanboyism aside and saw it for what it really was. Awesome.

Let me just say (for those that haven't read the comics) it really is the most faithful adaptation to date, as a detective film noir and played as more of a thriller with some action thrown in - but even the visuals - I mean Gotham City looks and feels like it unlike any film before. Robert Pattinson is Batman/Bruce Wayne and he grows towards the end into as close to the caped crusader as one could hope. He doesn't quite nail the billionaire playboy philanthropist alter ego of Bruce Wayne in this film but something tells me that is why the movie is called The Batman - because the sequels will give the character a chance to evolve.

Jeffrey Wright plays Jim Gordon and he plays it very well, Zoe Kravitz is excellent and sassy as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano is incredible as The Riddler (especially at the end when you see him unmasked - what a phenomenal scene it is), and also unrecognisable is Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin - who while brief is absolutely mind-blowing with the few minutes screen time he has. I wasn't entirely sure on Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth but on second viewing I did like him a bit more, I guess I had always pictured Alfred as much older - unfortunately he isn't in the film as much as one would hope to get a good feel of his character, I hope they rectify that with the sequel.

A lot of people are screaming about how the cast was race-swapped - I don't know and I don't care, everyone pulled off great performances, some with very little they had and they felt very much like the characters from the comics so I can kind of brush it aside. I mean Harvey Dent was race-swapped in the original Batman (1989) and nobody seemed to mind there.

As for the best Batman I appreciate it is subjective. I have a soft spot for Tim Burton's Batman and Batman Returns as I grew up with them. But I will say Batman Begins is my favourite of Christopher Nolan's trilogy because it feels much closer to the comics. The major selling point is Gotham City - this is Batman's world, the city has to feel like an extension of him, and it has to draw me in, if the city is generic like in the case of The Dark Knight & The Dark Knight Rises - I just don't feel invested or connected to it.

So if I am going to compare it to anything it would be Batman Begins - I would say it is better - but only just. It is a lot darker, much grittier, akin to the movie Se7en with Brad Pitt & Morgan Freeman, the Batmobile is the easily the best ever Batmobile on screen and feels like an extension of Batman and his rage and the score by Michael Giacchino is epic and worth a listen! And I thought Danny Elfman's and Hans Zimmer's were great in their own way.

The film is incredible and I urge you all to see it on the big screen. If you are not sold on it at first - just go again :) you won't regret it - the Batmobile scene alone will have you glued to the seat.

Don't know what Charles was on. I remember seeing the Joker and thinking, if only they could make a batman film of this quality. Well, they are damn close and hopefully this will be the first of a new trilogy.
Pattinson was excellent in "The Lighthouse" and he brings that quality to a new brooding troubled Wayne and when the mask is on - he is at home, in the shadows with intent and purpose. Supporting cast excellent. Please let this be the shape of things to come in the inevitable sequels.

Just been to the cinema to see this, it was painful to watch, had to walk out half way through. It is just as bad as the joker. Poor scripts and poor directing. The worst Batman film in the series. Don't waste your money on this dribble.

You could spend some time analysing why this film doesn't work, but if you've just lost two and a half hours of your life and £9.99 watching it, you'll know it's just boring. Probably one of the most disappointing films ever made. It simply fails to take off.

I am not a fan of the Nolan Batman movies, so I was less than pleased to find this new movie is more of the same. Tedious, pretentious and unexciting. Why do filmmakers seem to think that Batman is a credible character? He's a millionaire who goes out at night wearing a rubber suit, for goodness sake. A golden opportunity to take Batman in a new direction has been thrown away. The best thing to be said for this is that its nowhere near as bad as 'Batman Vs.Superman Dawn Of Justice'. Unfortunately, its not much better either. The best Batman movies of the past twenty years are 'Return Of The Caped Crusaders' and 'Batman Vs. Two Face'.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Dark Knight Detective Actually Does Some Detective Work
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 July 2022

Two years into Bruce Wayne's (Robert Pattinson) crusade to clean up the crime-ridden streets of Gotham City as the costumed vigilante known as The Batman, a mysterious serial killer - calling himself The Riddler (Paul Dano) - starts murdering figures of authority as part of a plan to expose the corrupt heart of the city.

With a running time just shy of three hours I approached The Batman with caution, fearing it might be ponderous or overblown, but I needn't have worried: writer/director Matt Reeves has crafted the finest live-action Batman movie since Tim Burton's seminal duology.

Whereas Burton embraced comic book heightened reality, Reeves - like Christopher Nolan before him - has taken a more grounded approach, giving the film a feel akin to Taxi Driver, Seven, Saw, and Watchmen.

Pattinson's Bruce Wayne is driven like Travis Bickle and Rorschach, while The Riddler is his John Doe or John Kramer.

The script, co-written by Reeves and Peter Craig, really emphasises the detective side of The Batman, something often given short shrift in the shadow of his abundance of rich boy gadgets.

While Pattinson's Batman uses technological gimmicks, the finest weapon in his arsenal is his brain.

At its heart, The Batman is an old school crime thriller - from the Chinatown or LA Confidential camp - rather than an action movie (although there is plenty of action and grand set pieces),

Because there is so much going on, the film demands your concentration to keep track of all the spinning plates for 176 minutes, and can't really be appreciated if you have one eye on your phone all the time.

As Bruce digs into The Riddler's case, he unearths a mess of politics and graft that eventually even connects his own family to the highest echelons of organised crime in Gotham.

On top of everything else, The Riddler's story cleverly plays with modern fears about online indoctrination, the power of half-truths, and what goes on in the darker corners of the world wide web.

Balanced against that, the film also deals with the fallout from someone motivated purely by revenge (The Batman is nicknamed 'Vengeance' by several people).

I really liked the fact that, as he's only been at this for a short time, Bruce Wayne is still quite flawed, he stalls the Batmobile, fumbles a landing with his glider suit, and loses his temper several times.

This isn't overdone to slapstick level, just enough to show that he's a "work in progress".

Also, because this isn't yet another "origin story" for Batman, there's no unnecessary explanations of how he got all his cool toys or his training, he's simply The Batman.

And while Pattinson does appear occasionally as Bruce Wayne, for the most part the film takes place at night when he is dressed as the caped crusader.

Not only is Robert Pattinson superb in the title role, but there isn't a weak link in the stellar supporting cast.

Zoë Kravitz's take on Selina Kyle/Catwoman really reminded me of Joëlle Jones's comic books from 2018, and the ever-reliable Jeffrey Wright makes, of course, a great Jim Gordon, very much taking the role of Batman's crimefighting partner - when Selina isn't around.

Paul Dano gives us a particularly disturbing version of The Riddler, while a heavily made-up Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin channels Robert De Niro, and John Turturro is equally almost unrecognisable as sinister crime lord Carmine Falcone.

Although there's no "Court of Owls" in this Gotham, The Batman reminded me of Scott Snyder's incredible comic book storyline from 2011 that not only tackled the dark forces behind Gotham's rotten core but also gave the book the feel of a hard boiled crime novel.

The Batman undeniably shares DNA with earlier Batman movies, it also stands apart for its more cerebral approach to the central character.
