How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 starsGood reading but distasteful also
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 March 2016
It is a good reading, the type of reading that makes you interested to see what will happen next. It is set during the Second World War. An enjoyable book. This time I was prepared to write a good review, as this book is quite enjoyable and it’s the type of book that you can’t put it down. The characters are well described, the places also.
When you watch a film that is set during the First or Second World War, or any war that took place in the past centuries, you do NOT see explicit scenes of a sexual nature, at all! There is some indications but not the details shown explicitly. I mean, little, little details. How inappropriate that would be in any 18 rate films. No, not at all. Wartime fiction books should not have detailed sexual activities. You name it, and it’s there. Why not be brief at certain situations? Why all the details of what happens during a sexual encounter? I did not buy a book expecting to read about sex at all!!! I just wanted a relaxing wartime book, to discover how people used to live, and at the same time find out how they felt, what they did to survive. I have read a few fiction books set in the war times because I find it fascinating to see how they actually lived. But to read some disgusting passages in this book just made me feel aghast. Just because some stupid comedians swear all the time, it doesn’t mean people are going to sell more books because the books can be crude! The British Comedians who are some of the highest-grossing comedians in the world do not swear! I wonder why they are so very famous and millionaires? Well, they are intelligent and decent people. Summarizing, it’s a good story and crude also. No need to include crudeness. What a shame! It lacks skills.

Pre-war story of everyday life. Different families, some living in poverty and others managing in low wages and helping other families.

Looking forward to the second book.

5.0 out of 5 stars a wonderful read

Lizzie Lane’s wonderful description how life was during WWII certainly had a ring of truth about it. You felt you were there with the characters and you wanted Mary Ann to find happiness even if she had to disappoint her family. I loved the way it did have a little twist at the end but I do not want to give too much away. I am looking forward to read Lizzie Lane’s other novels. I definitely recommend this book.

This is the 2nd book in the series I've read it's addictive, I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to read the next chapter/book.
I love Mary Anne's character and resilience as a mother her actions are understandable and her children are a blessing. Her husband is a brute but it highlights that there are always two sides to every story.

5.0 out of 5 stars loved the book, once again a good read from Lizzie Lane, only downside was the realisation that this was the prelude to A Wartim

Another good book from Lizzie Lane, the only downside being that I didn't know that this is the prelude to
A WArtime Family which I had already read! And thoroughly enjoyed! If you 're a lover of ordinary people's lives during the Second World War I'm quite sure you'll enjoy this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Enjoyable Tale of Life in the Second World War

I did enjoy this book with all its sub plots with plenty of twists and turns. A few inaccuracies however . E.g. One or two contradictions and language inappropriate to the era. This did not detract from a good story with memorable characters.
