Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 May 2022
I am just going to say it - Angela Marsons is a very mean writer. She clearly gives no consideration to the mental well being of her audience at all. That is the only possible reason for the opening scene of this latest Kim Stone novel, because it is emotional, jaw dropping and fluffing hell, did it make me hungry to devour the rest of the book. I tore through this in one evening - not an unusual occurrence for me with Kim Stone books, granted - but this had everything I needed and more. Mystery, tension, threat, fast pacing and that perfect amount of intrigue to make me almost tempted to skip to the final chapters just to reassure myself everything would be okay. Almost ...

If you can get past the prologue without fainting or having a cardiac episode, then you will, like Kim and co, find yourself faced with a tragic and somewhat perplexing case of what, initially at least, seems like murder suicide. Almost an entire family lost under very devastating circumstances, with all clues pointing towards the mother as the potential aggressor. But this would be a very short novel if it were all that simple and you know from the minute Kim Stone's special spidey senses start a tingling that something is not quite right with this almost perfectly closed scene. And what faces us and the team is a case that is far more complex and twisted than anyone could have foreseen, with Angela Marsons keeping the revelations and surprises coming at regular intervals, the clues, and the shocks, dropped at just the right moment to keep us all on our toes, especially if you think you've even half a chance of guessing the what, why and wherefores of this particular case.

As if that's not enough, and to be honest, it's a fair old twisting and turning case in its own right, a face from Kim's past makes a very unexpected reappearance turning Kim's whole life upside down. And no - it's probably not who you are thinking. The least said the better in this particular case but it sees the threat and menace levels burst right off the top of the scale and, as foes go, this is possibly one of the worst and most heinous of people Kim has ever had the misfortune to meet. Its an unwelcome distraction to the team, but a very welcome one for readers who, if you're like me, love the kind of dastardly darkness that Angela Marsons excels at drawing into her stories. There are some very uncomfortable moments, scenes that will have you on the edge of the seat, largely thankful that, this far at least, the author never quite goes that dark, but she goes dark enough to make those emotional and nerve-wracking moments really hit home.

It's not all darkness and tension though - don't panic. The book is loaded with the usual banter and humour you might expect, and some of the early scenes in the book, where Kim and co try a little out of the office teamwork, really do make you smile. All of our favourite characters are here where they belong, the camaraderie between Penn and Stacey and the back and forth between Bryant and Kim causing many a smile. Plus there is an unexpected fifth wheel as it were, someone who gives Kim as good as they get and whose very dry and unphased attitude towards Kim's barbs made me laugh on more than one occasion. It's not often Kim Stone gets out manoeuvred and it's fun to see shen she is.

And then there's that ending. The one where we get to understand the full meaning of that fateful, jaw dropping prologue. Gah. I hate, hate, hate the way in which Angela Marsons can so easily manipulate our emotions. There is one particular scene, when we are forced to think of misdemeanours past (the author's that is) where is it nigh on impossible for anyone with a soul, or anyone who loves these characters, to keep their tear ducts in check. I could feel myself welling up. Not helping my reputation as a cold and emotionless reader at all 🤨😉

But it's a perfect way to wrap up what has definitely got to be one of my favourite reads in the series. Those final lines though ... You get that sense of a step change in tone, and maybe even character perhaps, and I'm really intrigued now to see where the author takes the series after this, perhaps Kim's toughest case to date. Most definitely recommended

Having read each and every one of marsons brilliant books, this one I found hard going. There were far to many characters (keeping having to look back to find who's who is boring). But it was the abrupt silly ending that I found a total joke. No one with half a brain would never ever go it alone with out telling her team for backup, Stone is not a super hero, just a human being. To end a story with out telling the reader why, where, how etc etc is a cheap get out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kim Stone fans you will not be disappointed!

Angela Marsons has written another belter of a Kim Stone novel in her latest book, Six Graves. Right from the very first page I knew this was going to be a good one, and Angela Marsons took me on a rollercoaster of a ride. Kim is perhaps faced with her toughest case yet, and the stakes are raised even higher for her in this book.

I really felt for Kim in this book. Although this is a very dark time for her, some of Kim’s dark humour still comes through which makes for some light hearted moments throughout the book. If you haven’t read the previous books in this series, I think it’ll definitely benefit if you have, before you read this book. A highly dangerous, sadistic killer has escaped from prison, a person from Kim’s not too distant past, and he is out for revenge with his mind fixated on Kim.

Angela Marsons really knows how to keep her readers glued to the page, and I was hooked from the moment I learned what was facing Kim in this book. I wanted to know what actions she was going to take following this discovery, and true to her character, she certainly isn’t about to give up her work to go into hiding as her boss suggests. As well as the added tension of the escaped prisoner, Kim is also facing a particularly tough case. A family have been found murdered, in what appears to be a murder-suicide. This is a really twisty investigation for Kim to get to grips with and this case had me hooked as well, as Kim and her team try to get to the bottom of what happened to this family.

The danger is there right from the get-go, and although Kim appears to just throw herself into her work to distract herself from what’s going on, you can feel the tension rising. You can see that she is nervous. She knows just how dangerous the man is who’s escaped from prison. The scenes told from this person’s point of view were so chilling, and Angela Marsons really delves into his state of mind. You can see just how fixated he is on getting revenge on Kim, and it seems that he’ll do absolutely anything to achieve that goal. That’s what makes him so dangerous and frightening. I was rooting for the police to catch him. I feared what was going to come if they didn’t get to him in time.

I’m always in awe of every new book in this series whenever I reach the end. The end of each book always leaves me eagerly anticipating the next, and I think I have to say that Six Graves is my favourite in the series to date. Kim Stone fans, you need to read this book the moment you get your hands on it, you will not be disappointed!

I'm a huge fan of the Kim Stone series and for the 15 previous books my statement has been along the lines of 'I didn't think it could get any better, but it has', well she's done it again this was a superb read.

The characters, the storyline, the jeopardy present seemingly on every page, had my heart doing all its moves. The story starts with a house fire containing the destruction of a family, apparently from one of their own and Kim is determined to find out what lay behind these devastating events. Her investigation doesn't take her anywhere good!

If you are looking to see if the series is as good as the previous books, prepare to be stunned; if you haven't read any, you're in for a treat!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pulsating, compulsive, and terrifyingly terrific.

A terrifically terrifying five-star read for six graves with two excellent storylines that makes this a gripping and pulsating crime thriller. This was a new author for me and after this book it most certainly will not be my last.

With superb tension and enthralling thrill this book captivates you from the first pages. From the Prologue, I just knew I would love this book, and it did not disappoint.

The Plot

What is seemingly a house fire becomes a house of horrors as four members of the same family are discovered murdered in what appears to be a murder suicide.

Troubled, depressive and with a catalogue of bad decisions in her life Helen Daynes decides to kill her family before turning the gun on herself. Although a lot does not add up. The evidence is conflicting and the reputation of the woman in the centre of this nightmare is so misplaced and misunderstood. However, it was Helen that wanted to keep her past hidden and in the process of finding out who the real person was, we realise just how much suffering and bad decisions shapes a person. Heart breaking too.

The second storyline in ‘Six Graves’ is about a psychopath that Stone has put away. A man obsessed with revenge where a prison sentence did nothing to wash away the tides of resentment, bitterness, and retribution.

So, in a fabulous game of cat and mouse, Kim is trying to solve a murder whilst she is forced into quarantine and at the same time trying to avoid a ruthless killer on the hunt. A n escaped convict who only wants one outcome even if it means his own death.

Review and Comments

I was in the mood for a great thriller and happy to say this one delivered. One of the best all round thrillers I have read in a while for its characterisation, devilish thrilling plots, and superb tension.

I was totally absorbed in the book as we effortlessly worked our way through two different story lines which at the same time were so perfectly interwoven. However it was Kim Stone’s character that I really enjoyed here which is unusual in a book with a terrific plot. And to give you an insight into this character, her wing woman reminds her

“Every emotion you used tonight was beneficial. Your anger propelled you into action; your fear alerted you that something was wrong. Your stubbornness meant you didn’t stop working on Edna until you brought her back. Your sympathy prompted you to hold her hand. Your empathy got her daughter to the hospital. Your tenacity ensured we stayed there until there was nothing else that could be done.”, and so what is to be said other than..

Pulsating, compulsive, and terrifyingly terrific.

This 16th book about Kim Stone is brilliant.
The first book in the series had me hooked, this one is as good as the first, if not better.
Kim Stone is unlikeable and damaged.
A serial killer wants her dead, plus she and her team have the deaths of a family to investigate.
The author takes us on a whirlwind tour of how everything plays out. Few words are wasted, it's a well paced read.
Characters in the book are like much missed old friends, including the more minor characters. Angela Marsons has a way of making the reader invest in each person, and want to grab a cup of tea (or toaster), to have a natter with them.
Read in one sitting, but it will stay with me awhile.

Angela Marsons never disappoints! I have loved every one of the 16 (I can’t believe its that many) books in the series so far!

There are two storylines going on in this book, one tells of a family shot to death in their own home, seemingly by their mother who has a past history of psychiatric illness. The other is that a previously caught and locked up psychopath, who Kim managed to blind in one eye while saving two little girls from a certain, horrifically painful death as this man gets his kicks out of inflicting pain on others until they die. He is set on revenge and wants to kill Kim, who is subsequently given 24hr police protection - a specialist police officer called Leanne - who glues herself to Kim’s every move. If you’ve read any of the series before you’ll be able to imagine how much Kim enjoys that!!

I read this while I was recovering from Covid and I think that slowed down my thinking as I kept having to recap when reading about the family shot to death as I got confused about who was who.

The story culminates in heart stopping final few chapters that had me shouting, ‘NOOOOO!’ at my Kindle! Brilliantly done and totally breath stopping!

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely addictive police procedural

‘Six Graves’ is Book 16 in Angela Marsons’ D.I. Kim Stone series of police procedurals set in the West Midlands. I have read a fair number of books in this series and found them excellent.

I find it best to read this kind of novel with minimal plot details. So just a taster: following a chilling Prologue we join D.I. Stone and her team on a weekend team-building retreat with four other police teams. Then Stone is pulled out and escorted to DCI Woodward ‘s office where she receives the news that a dangerous criminal with a grudge against her has escaped prison. While she is determined not to let her life be disrupted, Woodward insists that protection officer Leanne King be in charge of her security. The women have a rocky history.

Stone is determined to keep leading her team despite the danger. Their current investigation involves the death of a family of four, including two teenagers. What appears at first to be a straightforward case, soon reveals itself to be much more complex.

I have to admit that Stone’s stubbornness in the face of the threat from her enemy was frustrating. I am certain that Leanne deserved a medal for her patience.

Overall, ‘Six Graves’ proved a fast paced police procedural that delivered on the nail-biting tension complete with satisfying twists. Once I started reading I finished it in a single sitting as it proved impossible to put down. The D.I. Kim Stone series has become a ‘must read’ for me and I will be looking forward to Book 17.

I’m a prolific reader and I’ve read everyone of Angela’s book and they are all absolutely brilliant, this one is no exception. The plots are consistently gripping and the characters are so likeable, you feel like you know them. Kim Stone is a complex character, not sociable and difficult to deal with, but you know that at heart she is a truly good person and cares about people very much, she would be an amazing friend if you were lucky enough to have her. I can’t recommend this series of books enough, it is preferable to read them in order though, because there is a lot of back story with the characters personal lives. I always pre order as soon as a new book is announced, I can’t wait for the next one. The only down side for me, is that I live in the area they are set in, and I drive my husband mad, because I keep passing places and saying “ooh, there was a body there”, and I can’t face the playground in one of the local parks! Lol

Oh wow!!! The prologue drew me in so much I couldn't put the book down until I'd finished it in a day, Kim is up against it, an escaped convict who will stop at nothing until he has got his revenge on Kim, she has a body guard with her 24/7 which is amusing knowing how Kim has hardly any friends and loves her space.
As this isn't enough Kim and her team are trying to find who murdered a whole family, with lots of twists and turns and the most dramatic ending I've ever read this book deserves more than 5 stars!!! I think it's the best one yet but I say that every time
