Glad we changed to MAM bottles

We switched over to MAM bottles from Tommee Tippee and we are so glad that we did. Our baby is less colicky and feeds so much better on these bottles. When we first got them and I put them together they leaked but whenever my husband made them up they didn't. Realised that the white rubber seal at the bottom I had been pushing into the base when infact you just need to place it in and then screw the bottle on and it pushes it down and creates a seal. Haven't leaked since this realisation!

Caution!

I would like to warn all parents who bought or are going to buy this product. It was my second time purchasing bottles of this brand. To be honest, I was very pleased with the quality of the MAM bottles. Our baby took the teats well and there were no leaks whilst feeding or other problems, as I'd found with other brands. That was until I noticed water had been leaking into them from our cooling bowl. Water was seeping in through the holes in the base despite the fact a rubber grommet is fitted there to seal the bottle. By the time we'd noticed, we'd been feeding our baby for almost 2 months and not realising that un-boiled tap water was leaking into our 'sterile' formula preparations. We now have to cover our MAM bottles with a freezer bag whilst cooling. I hope this review will help some of you when choosing bottles.

PLEASE READ-LEAKS TAP WATER INTO STERILE FORMULA

I initially got one of these bottles for free with the boots parenting club app. My baby took to it straight away and seemed to prefer it over the TT bottles. I bought more off Amazon. We made our sterile bottles up- boiled water first to the line, adding formula and would then sit the bottle in a jug of cold water to cool before giving. We noticed 3 WEEKS IN that the amount in the bottle seemed to increase on occasion from 120ml to 150ml. After going on forums it turns out if you are putting a premade cold bottle in a jug of boiled water to heat or vice versa you need to ensure the top is not screwed on. The bottle will suck in the cold tap water hence the amount increasing! Or milk will leak out into the hot water. What a nightmare! I've been beside myself as a first time mum knowing our 3 week old has been having unsterlised tap water added to her bottles, potentially 30mls at every feed! So disappointing and dangerous to say the least after following sterilizing and making up bottles to a T to ensure she is safe. She has had reflux, diarrhoea and wind+ since being born and I always thought we had a sicky baby but more likely it's the tap water she has been consuming. Will now need to get in touch with the doctor to make sure she is okay. PLEASE be aware of this if going to purchase....
Needs to be in massive warning over the bottle packaging, we had no clue until I came accross it in a forum!? As new parents you have enough going on without these things not being made very clear to you! Have contacted MAM and awaiting a reply....

We thought our baby was suffering with colic so replaced our tommee tippee bottles with these.... didn’t seem to help BUT that’s because it transpired my son had a soy intolerance so wasn’t colic after all.... That aside, I do like these bottles anyway.... I think the teet encourages better (wider) latch if you’re combination feeding like I was... my son was always happy to switch between mam bottle and nipple.....
However, I have knocked a star off because I’m not sure you can warm them by placing in boiling water... reason being the bottom has holes in which lets the air out of the bottle... although there is a plastic seal between the base and the milk, it only slots in and I’m not confident that it couldn’t be compromised. If I was using formula I’d simply use the tommee tippee prep machine and make it in the bottle... if I was wanting to warm up expressed milk, I’d warm in a tommee tippee bottle and decant into mam bottle (but that’s more washing up!)
Also, if you are combination feeding, unless your supply is great and fast flowing.... don’t make the mistake I did of switching to a size 2 teet just because size 2 teets say ‘2 months +’...... the flow is so much faster than my own flow and he started to refuse my boob during the day and opt for the easier faster flowing bottle..... I still fed him off the boob at night whilst he was sleepy and couldn’t tell the difference but never again during the day.

Bad Quality/Expected better from MAM

I brought two lots of these two months ago when I upped the amount of milk my son has. A couple of weeks ago I noticed that the numbers on the side were fading - bearing in mind, I wash and sterelise all my bottles the same (and both the 130ml and 160ml bottles that I have HAVE NOT done the same thing) so this can only be a fault of the product. At the time, I shrugged it off and thought that I'd just got a dodgy batch but now all six bottles have different levels of wear when it comes to the measurements on the side. Waste of money as I can't feed my baby when I have to guess the measurement! I'm honestly disappointed, I expected better quality from MAM.

What having a baby has taught me, is that we never really stop wanting the bottle do we. Just the contents may get a little stronger later on in life. They have been great, we have six of these in total and these were purchased to increase the number we had from four to six. It's always good to have a few saved and ready to go, spreads them out over the day. Really easy to clean if you have the right tool (a brush from mam designed for these bottles works perfect). Not too big for packing in the travel bag and dead easy to use. Takes three minutes to sterilise adding a minute for each extra bottle you have in the microwave. Eventually the process of cleaning and sterilising becomes like clockwork, endless endless clockwork. Endless...

Yes they are pricey, but to combine a sterilizer with a bottle is just genius. Saves on having a bulky sterilizer hanging around the kitchen. Plus you can take them anywhere without the bulk. They are great for holidays. I tried a few different bottles as I had original bought Tommee Tipee, but our daughter didn't like the teats on those and the other bottles. She took to these bottles straight away without any issues. She was previously breastfed. Slightly fiddly to clean just because of all the components. Also make sure you have the white circular base inserted correctly in bottom of the bottle otherwise you'll get a leak. I wish I'd used these first time round. Expensive initial purchase but very much worth it in the long run.

After trying 5 different brands, these are the only bottles that helped my sons colic. No more screaming with wind thanks to the system. Easy to unscrew and clean them properly, only thing is if you are standing them in water to heat up, the bottom part sucks in water, easily rectified by putting a sandwich/freezer bag round the bottom to stop the water getting sucked in - which is bad as that water isnt fresh booked and cooled and can cause stomach upset. We use the perfect prep machine now so not an issue for us.

The other handy thing is you can unscrew then, set them with the teat and too part in the bottom, out the body part of the bottle on then the lid on top, 20ml of water and 3 mins inthe microwave and its steriliser. SUPER handy if you're out visiting, it was really handy when we went to stay at my mother in laws when he was 3 weeks old rather than take the steriliser with us.

Highly recommend.

They are lovely looking bottles, and little one did take well to using them (he wasn’t picky though), but my main complaint is they did leak quite a bit from the base after some use.
From memory, I think it says not to put boiling water in them but.... how do you make a bottle of formula without first putting boiling water in the bottle to dissolve the powder 😕
They are super easy to sterilise though, which was a huge positive.
We started using these because LO had a very strong suck and was choking on the flow of milk from our Tommee Tippee bottles. The flow from these definitely slowed him down a bit but he kept clicking/smacking at the teat and taking in extra air, like he couldn’t make a good connection (he already had some colic and these didn’t seem to help us much sadly).
Ended up switching to Dr Browns in the end.

These bottles work well to help prevent colic and my son feeds easily from them. I have several MAM bottles and this specific design is the only one to have turned a funny colour. After a few uses it’s developed a orange tinge, something none of the others have! While I recommend MAM bottles - this design has been a let down aesthetically but the bottle itself works lovely - we just use them for nighttime rather than take them out and about with us
