Do not buy this monitor!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 July 2022
I bought this monitor because I wanted to upgrade to a true 4k monitor with a good refresh rate, and HDR capability. The picture is beautiful and now I've had the true 4k experience there is simply no going back. The G-sync functionality of the monitor was a nice to have for me, however G-sync has since become an utter nightmare and I have resorted to completely disabling it.
What the details for this monitor do not say on here, or on Samsung's own site, is the refresh rate range for G-sync as a "compatible" monitor is 48hz to 144hz. You can only find this very important detail on nVidia's site. If you are playing a highly demanding game where the frame rate drops below 48hz (and I have found that the minimum threshold on nVidia's site may also not be true as I have issues just below 60hz) the screen starts to badly flicker. If you get really low frames the whole monitor switches modes, as if it is switching off and on again. As G-sync was a "nice to have" for me, it does mean I am not sending the monitor back with a complaint, but it should never have been in a situation where the information was not detailed anywhere by Samsung. Very much buyer beware and dodgy marketing there!
One other annoyance with this monitor is a fair bit of backlight bleed through on the edges of the panel when you are a dark environment in game. It is VERY noticeable if you also happen to be in a dark room at the time. Solution there is to obviously switch on a light, but there is not really anything you can do about on-screen darkness. For me it is a minor annoyance, but for people looking for a perfect picture, you would be better moving onto higher end monitors.
Update: I am now sending this disaster of a purchase back and have dropped the rating to 1 star (as zero is annoyingly not an option). The flickering kept returning and I kept disabling features like g-sync, HDR, and even reduced the frequency down. This would only reduce the flickering, not eliminate it, while removing all the reasons to even have this monitor. The backlight problem became even worse with HDR switched on and using anything with a dark background. You could literally see a vertical white line move with the mouse!
What I am really kicking myself for is that these problems have plagued this line of monitors for 2 years now and are well documented in computer groups, but I relied on reviews from magazines and YouTube tech people that magically avoided these common issues.
