How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 starsA better alternative to iPad for Kids
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 June 2021
My son has been using an iPad. Took advantage of Prime Day and purchased this for him. Loved the parental controls and dashboard which makes it easier to set a time and control what he is watching. He also loves that it's easier to control the access apps, games, movies and books. As a parent, you really have a lot of control what content you can share and can even do multiple kids' profiles.

We purchased the 10 PRO so the screen is big enough for kids. The casing also makes it more durable. I have been able to install Netflix and Disney+ without any issues. The only problem I had was YT Kids was not available for installation as well as Amazon Prime Video. The workaround for the Prime Video is to share any downloaded movies or series from the parent dashboard. But apart from that, I would have loved to see the Prime videos available for his age all ready for viewing.

2.0 out of 5 starsNice tablet, rubbish Amazon Kids+ service - and endangering children's online safety
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 July 2021
We have Amazon Prime and weren't bothered about Amazon "owning us", as long as the service is good. I was even happy with the fact that I'd be paying a small fee for a kids service after a year on top of the Prime membership. But what feels completely rubbish is that you can't watch Amazon Prime videos within the child's profile! Only stuff you've actually bought.
Within the parent account controls on the main Amazon site is a tab to select options relating to Prime Video, but when you click this, it simply says "We've added loads of great Prime content to Amazon Kids+, accessible from the app." Well, Amazon Prime doesn't have a great selection of kids films to start with, but as you work down the few decent quality films they do have, none are available within Amazon Kids+.

Gruffalo? Nope
Happy Feet? Nope
Stickman? Nope
Spy Cat? Nope
Despicable Me? Nope
The Nut Job? Nope
Room on a Broom? Nope
Shaun the Sheep Movie? Nope
The Lorax? Nope
Hotel Transylvania? Nope

So how do you actually get these on the tablet for your kids to watch? There are two ways. The first - buy them, even though you can already watch them with Amazon Prime. Yep - pay full price for a film you've been able to watch for free on your TV or all your other devices, purely for the luxury of accessing it within your kids profile on the tablet. Or, do what any sane person will do, and use the Prime Video app within the parent profile on the tablet. But obviously, you have to be with your kids because if they start messing around, scrolling and exiting the film you've chosen, they could see all Amazon Prime content, or make unauthorised purchases on your account.

Amazon must know that this is what people will do - no one is going to buy a movie they can watch for free with a few swipes on the same device. And so it feels frankly cruel and immoral to create this choice: "Pay us more money for the same movie, or risk your child's online safety!"

To add insult to injury, there is a clever functionality that allows children to access the age appropriate store and "request" new content, which is then approved in the parental profile. But no Prime content shows up! So even if you wanted to pay for it, the children can't select a film, you'd have to buy it first within your main Amazon account. It's quite mindboggling that I type in " The Gruffalo" into the kids profile store search, and it simply doesn't show up - despite the fact it's free to watch on Prime Video.

They don't deliberately hide this limitation, but they don't exactly publicise it either. Over the years we've bought enough premium films to still have a reasonable selection for the children to watch, plus you can access both BBC iPlayer Kids and Netflix (which, for safety, you need to add profile locks to so that children can only access the kids profile - a bit of a chore but a reasonable workaround), so between the three services it doesn't feel quite so limiting.

Still: Anyone would expect a Prime Video app within the kids profile that gives access to the full range of Prime Video kids content, given that we PAY FOR THIS ALREADY. It's really outrageous that Amazon don't offer this. And, it's a real shame because there's plenty to love about this tablet - feels solid, a no-quibble 2 year guarantee, a nice, well-designed protective case. But they really need to sort out whatever licensing issue is preventing them from giving this tablet the access it needs.

2.0 out of 5 stars Restrictions on "Kids" profile

For a tablet advertised as a kids device I was shocked to find out that once in the kids profile features such as alexa, web browser functionality and calling other echo devices were not available, the table goes offline in the alexa app once in the kids profile at least give the parent the option to turn those features on/off.

I'm now weighing up whether to return it or not.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great tablet but…

This device is great but the case is an absolute nightmare if any of the buttons pop out. My son now struggles to turn the volume up or down. I contacted Amazon customer care twice about getting a replacement case or even the buttons so I can put them in myself and the best they came back with is the bulky case for the regular hd 10, which I obviously didn’t want or I would have ordered that one in the beginning, went with the pro tablet for its sleek design.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great all around, replaced fire 7 for kids device
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 July 2021

Made up with the prime day price and feel it's an excellent deal for a budget kids tablet. Screen is nice and crisp at just over 1080p, great battery life, excellent profile system and kids media services. I find myself picking this up when left on the sofa and flicking it to the adult profile to browse on regularly even though there's usually an iPad pro in the room somewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Early Days, but kids love these
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 July 2021
Colour Name: DoodleStyle Name: Fire HD 10 Kids ProVerified Purchase
Bought these as an upgrade to my kids old FireHD tablets (7"). These seem good quality, screen quality seems better than the previous one, it's obviously bigger which the kids love and there is more freedom on the AmazonKids software, for example they can access both Netflix and Disney+ apps on their own account instead of asking mum or dad to switch accounts. Also the parental controls seem easier to use and I now get approval notifications when my kids try to buy something they shouldn't.

The case isn't quite as child proof as the old Bumper case so I'm afraid of what will happen when the kids drop it but this is aimed at primary school children so maybe it will teach them to be responsible with it. At least this case has a flip out stand (that also doubles as a carry handle) so no more propping the tablets up against something.

We have not explored everything that is available on the AmazonKids software but one of the reasons for us to upgrade is the educational content that is available for the age range of the product (6-12). Not used this to comment yet but the content looks good.

As the title says, early days but impressed so far and kids are happy which is probably the biggest endorsement.

Great upgrade on the last amazon tablet, I really like the carry handle which doubles up as a stand. The only thing I'm not sure on is the case, doesn't seem as robust as the last bumper case, I feel if we drop this one it will break....yet to see! It's easy to use and battery life is good. Overall very happy with it.

If you buy this during one of the many sales Amazon has on it there is simply nothing I have seen that comes close. It isn't as good as an iPad, but it costs around a third and it isnt far away. Good screen, great battery, pretty fast. My only complaint is really around the software. Missing the Google play store is an issue and what is there sometimes does feel cluttered once you download a fair few items. The kids thing is pretty good, lots of curated books and apps, but still missing loads of ones on standard Android or iPads. But still, the price performance calculation is very simple. I have been really impressed

Ordered this for my 9 year old son and it arrived really quickly. Loaded up fine and it was simple to load our old profiles on. Worked fine in the morning, went out and went to use it in the afternoon and the white lines of death appeared on the screen (see pics). Called Amazon who were quick to answer and the lady I spoke to was very helpful but did say it might be an update issue. I did explain I was no IT guru but to me this was knackered. Again lady was great and said she would refund my money and I could order a new one. *This is the bit that annoyed me though, Amazon expect you to print the returns label off and they then deducted money from my refund for postage! So a product they supplied that was faulty and through no fault of mine, cost me money?! How is that right?*
Any how, the replacement works fine and my son likes it. Screen quality is good and battery life is long.
I would recommend for kids of my sons age and up.
Parent controls are easy to change and monitor.

Amazon Customer
3.0 out of 5 stars Great device with some major design flaws
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 October 2021
Colour Name: DoodleStyle Name: Fire HD 10 Kids ProVerified Purchase
So, as a relatively safe tablet for younger children I can't fault this too much - it offers the parent a decent amount of remote oversight and control to help keep their child safe whilst also giving the child the feeling of having their own tablet.
And now the flaws....
1. Am currently trying to get hold of customer service in case this is a fault but for some reason, whenever the tablet is turned off or restarted, a large number of the apps my daughter has installed just disappear and then need to be re-downloaded which isn’t always the fastest of processes.
2. The older profile allows children to request apps from the main store - these come as emails and can be reviewed in the parent dashboard but the information you get as a parent to determine if the app is suitable or not is somewhat limited.
3. Storage - the HD10 has 32gb of internal storage with the option to add a micro sd card. By the time you account for the operating system etc. you're down to about 24gb. Not a problem except that not everything can be stored on the sd card so your child will now begin to fill the memory and once full, the options for managing storage are awful meaning your best option may be to just reset the device, however...
4. Let's say your child has taken some Videos / Photos that you'd like to keep. Well just transfer them to the PC via the cable yeah? Nope. Not possible on the child profiles (even with the adult pin). It turns out, the only option is to have the content upload to the adult Amazon Photo's account where they will immediately mix in with all your own photos and the videos will also use up the very limited 5gb of free storage.
Even the options for doing the above are buried in options only visible in the adult profile - a horrible process even once you know what you're doing! Honestly, if Apple get around to doing their own kids tablet I'll be there in a heartbeat as the parent user experience for this is very poor.
