How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsSo easy to set up and works great!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 August 2018
Was sceptical that a wifi extender would work for my study upstairs as have real issues getting signal from the ground floor to the upstairs bedrooms. A mixture of really thick walls and pipes I guess as well as wooden doors block wifi signals. I tend to prefer 5G rather than 2G as well as the speeds are better with all the other wifi units in the area interfering with the signals.

I set it up with my access points downstairs and took it upstairs to the hallway, and now all rooms are serviced so well with a decent wifi speed so I can work productively from my office now. Fantastic! I used to use a power line extender with an old wifi router but it kept dropping out and signal on the power line extender was dreadful. I get up to 96Mb/s download out of a 200Mb/s line upstairs which is more than sufficient for what I need it for. Latency is only 22ms as well so not too bad for work. If I was gaming, I'd probably need higher speeds, but for voice and network it's great!

Highly recommended.

After 4 hours of setting this up, my wireless network speeds got LOWER not stable at existing. Found this out when I unplugged it and done a speed test, then plugged back in and speed test was a lot lower. Could not return as over return period expired. In the end hard wired item I wanted to be connected to ISP. No speed loss that route.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big but brilliant

I bought this with a TP-Link AC2800 dual-band router. The house is old with solid walls and has 3 floors. The router is on the top floor at the front and the Fire TV is on the ground floor at the back, so an extender is essential.
The first thing I noticed when opening the box was how big it was. It is 7.5x16cm, plus the aerials. On the other hand, the profile is flat, so it doesn't stick out from the wall. Our previous extender, although much smaller, stuck out far more, and the aerials were constantly getting knocked. This router feels heavy and solid, and the build quality seems to be good.
Set-up was quick and simple. Plug in close to the router; press WPS button on the router, then on the extender; repeat if using both bands; once the lights are steady, unplug and plug in at the best location. The main LED will be blue if the signal from the router is strong enough, red if it's weak. Altogether, 2 minutes from connecting to having 5-bar wifi everywhere in the house.
It happens that we got the best signal by locating it in a bedroom. A nice feature is that the LEDs can be switched off with a single press of a button, so nobody's sleep will be disturbed.
Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not knowing whether your device is connecting to the router or the extender!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 March 2019

This is a brief initial review of the setting up of the TP-Link RE450 as it may be helpful to others who have experienced poor signal strength and connection difficulties. My apologies if the point I will make has been covered before but there are so many reviews and questions and answers and trawling through them all would be a mammoth task. As with a lot of instructions accompanying the item in the box, they are at best somewhat opaque and often fail to stress what is important and what is not. This is no less true with the TP-Link 450 instructions.

I got nowhere with method one on the quick setup guide and so turned to method two. I eventually got this to work but I draw your attention to ‘3 Configure’ part 3. ‘Either keep the default SSIDs or customize them for the extended networks’. If you keep the default SSIDs you will have no easy way of seeing the TP link extender as a connection point for your iPad or wireless device etc. It will not be displayed as such automatically and as a consequence you will not be able to see whether your device is connecting to the router or the extender. I did this first of all and when my iPad connected to the network in a room with a poor signal, the signal still registered as poor because the iPad was connecting to the router and not the extender. When I guessed this might be happening, I went back into the configuration and gave the 2.4 and 5 GHz channels an individual name and DID NOT CLICK the ‘Copy Host SSID’ box. Hey Presto, problem solved. The extender channels then showed up separately on my iPad and I could connect to them and get a strong signal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Actually works, happy kids gaming online

This wi-fi booster is excellent. Just make sure you use a computer/laptop to set it up.

When I received this product I was very unsure to buy it as it is on the more expensive side and i have bought a different make one before and it was rubbish. But anyway after reading the reviews I decided to give this one a go. I am currently a virgin media customer and do get super fast broadband but my kids kept moaning as the signal was weaker reaching upstairs in a corner room through thick walls, and they couldn't play their online games and it was always slow or they kept getting booted off the games.
So I bought this. It arrived it great solid posh packaging just like the iPhone packaging. I firstly tried to set the extender up using the wps button but unfortunately after two goes it just wasn't happening. So I went ahead with using the instructions to set up the extender 'using a web browser' ie via a laptop.
The instructions were very easy to follow. You simply plug the extender in (preferably next to your original wi-fi router for now) until a solid blue light, use your laptop to connect to the tp-link extender wifi. The tp-link web browser should automatically launch or there is a website you can type in. You then need to make and enter a secure password to you for yourself. Then another window appears for you to find your old wireless router name and password to select this information, another window will appear for both 2.4 and 5ghz for you to save router names and passwords. You then verify this all on the next screen, then save.
After this you can now move the tp-link extender to the designated area, I simply plugged it in on the top landing, didn't even need to plug it next to the games console upstairs.....and wait for the solid blue light to appear and......that's it!!!!!
The wifi signal has now been boosted from 20.2mbps to 58.9mbps in the top corner room. My total wifi during peak week day is 66.1mbps. To calculate these figures I used the speedtest app.
I have included a screen shot for you guys to see. The bottom result is me standing in the corner bedroom upstairs, the second is me standing next to the original virgin media router and the top is of me standing back in corner bedroom with extender turned off.
I think this shows what a massive help the router has been and my kids have not complained since. When you do move and plug the extender back in, please allow for the solid circle light, the three blue lights plus a few minutes after for it all to kick in and you will be away!!!!!!

I purchased four of these bridges to use across two different sites and found that it was constantly dropping connections from my devices to the main wireless router even though the status page and LEDs would indicate that everything okay and that both the 2.5 and 5.0 GHz bands were connected. I'm from an enterprise I.T. background so know networks inside out and there was a Netgear booster in the exact same location that didn't have the same problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best range extender i've used - full 350mb speeds on 5Ghz
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 February 2019
Style Name: Wi-Fi Booster AC1750 Gigabit PortVerified Purchase
I have had a couple of TP link extenders (WRE850) in my house that were 'ok' and i had a couple of wifi security cameras connected to a 2.4Ghz network. So...i decided to give myself a bit of an upgrade.

My setup:
- Virgin router downstairs next to my TV pushing out 350mb speed
- PC upstairs with this Wifi extenders plugged into a socket next to it - using a CAT5 ethernet from the PC to this extender
- Wifi Security Cameras on a 2.4GHz network connecting to this wifi extender.

My Experience:
- Setup is super simple, connected my phone to the extenders wifi, created a password, and then chose a network to extend (you can do 2.4 and 5ghz at the same time)
- Renamed the 2.4Ghz network and 5ghz network SSIDs to match my Virgin Router
- Done

Speeds
- With my PC connected to the Wifi extender via a CAT5 cable i was getting the full 350mb, sometimes higher at around 380mb
- With my PC next to this extender and connecting over wifi i got around 320mb - think this was due to PC positioning and it being surrounded by electrical items, speakers and monitor etc
- On my Pixel3 Xl again the speeds were full at over 350mb on 5Ghz band
- On my wifes iphone the same, 350mb+ on the 5ghz Band

Cameras using the 2.4ghz band
- Again very good, no dropout and the range was great, i have one camera outside the front of my house and one at the rear, and this extender covered both

Overall Summary
5 out of 5 - these are awesome, the 5ghz pushes out the exact bandwidth of my router and probably more if you have a speedy connection.
The tether app is also good to check the positioning of the extender itself, very intuitive and a bonus

In short - go out and get one, for under £50 it's a great bit of kit

3.0 out of 5 stars Effective extender
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 June 2019
Style Name: Wi-Fi Booster AC1750 Gigabit PortVerified Purchase
Having tested our wi-fi around the house with a signal strength app, I was dismayed to find that our w-fi signal upstairs from our BT router was being overpowered by next door's Virgin signal. Being on the same channel, our's was struggling upstairs although downstairs was fine. I bought this extender as I have used TP-Link products before and have always been satisfied with them. I'm glad I did, since our signal upstairs is now far stronger than next door's signal and our phones etc are now working flawlessly. I placed it on the landing at the back of the house and it easily picks up the router downstairs at the front of the house. Set up was very easy using the wps button on the router and ssid's and passwords were transferred automatically. Our devices switch to the extender undetected and work as well as they do downstairs.
My only gripe would be that it is larger than I imagined, being the size of a large 'plus' size phone, but it fits in a double socket well enough without hindering the adjoining socket. I would heartily recommend this extender as it works extremely well. Top marks to TP-Link once again.

Product update: Had to return to Amazon for a refund as the 5 Ghz connection kept dropping out. Had to keep rebooting it to get the connection back. Quite disappointed as TP-Link products are normally very good.

Utter waste of time. Bought a while ago so outside time to return but only tried using today. Wouldn’t reliably extend signal from house 30ft to garden office. Set up comedically complex. Phone says attached, but app says “you are not connected”. Wifi password says same as home router, tried inputting it and it reads “incorrect password”. Tried reset. Back to square one. Smashed to smithereens with hammer. Felt better. Pathetic I know, but not as pathetic as this waste of £50.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY! WPA / TKIP encryption set by default!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 October 2020
Style Name: Wi-Fi Booster AC1750 Gigabit PortVerified Purchase
I have been using this wireless extender since December 2019 with no problems - seems to work fine.
However I have recently upgraded to iOS 14 and when my iPhone connects it says the connection has "weak security" because it is using TKIP on WPA/WPA2. To be blunt all recent devices should be using the stronger WPA2 AES encryption.

Loads of comments made on the TpLink community forums about this. The RE450 is not the only extender with this problem.

According to TpLink the extender should automatically use what your router is using. Mine is WPA2/WPA3 Personal, which uses AES. So there is another bug where it uses TKIP by default & doesn't change. Not good. TKIP is weak and can be hacked.
