A little expensive, but worth it for smell reduction!

We used the catsan litter before this and it did the job, it was a large bag and wasn’t too bad on price.

We have 4 cats and everyone that came into house would say there was a strong smell of ammonia (from the cat wee)

I took the plunge to try something new and went with silica crystals instead... What a difference! It works in a totally different way to the catsan and really works! No more odours and very clever in the way it absorbs moisture out of the solids to stop them smelling.

Overall a great product that I will continue to keep using! Very happy!

Blue Dye in Product, Beware

I posted a review in 21 January 2020 warning of the blue dye in this product. It's hidden, unless you investigate a low star review. The blue crystals alarmingly permanently stained my cat's grey litter tray, and I was so concerned I returned the product and wrote to the manufacturer. Guess what, my review is buried, can't see it it the list of "reviews by most recent", its not in the date order all the way to 2017. So, the retailer has the ability to manipulate reviews?! If you read my review you wouldn't buy it. Do you really want your cat' s feet in litter that stains paws blue? What's in that dye? Come on.

I had high hopes for this product having read the reviews on here. We normally get Golden Grey clumping litter from a well known company that rhymes with Moo-bus, but had for some reason run out and Moo-bus delivery takes a few days. So we ordered this stuff on Prime.

I was very taken with the idea that you only need to remove poo, and the wee will just magically be absorbed by the silica and the water in it will evaporate.

In the words of Boris the Animal from Men in Black 3: ‘Good plan. Didn’t work.’

Everything was ok for a few days, and I was pleased because there was no smell, except for with ‘solid waste’, when the smell was much, much worse than with clumping litter.

Then I noticed the litter getting darker and darker brown (Eww.) I shuffled it about and discovered that a big wee-sludge lake had collected at the bottom of the tray. And that was the end of our silica cat litter experiment. Nobody’s Sunday morning is improved by clearing out wee-sludge. Or even having to use the words ‘wee-sludge’.

So to recap, plus points:
-minimal tracking (though the few bits that do leave the tray are a pain to clear up, on account of being large-ish crystals that don’t want to be wiped)
-good odour control for urine, for a few days
-the bag is light to handle.

Minus points:
-Wee-sludge. Unless you have a cat that does tiny dainty little wees about once a day. Then it might work
-No odour control for poo at all. Poo needs removing immediately. Coming home from work and finding poo had been sitting there a while practically required an NBC suit.
-The cat is properly miffed with me.

So thanks, Pettex, but we’ll be going back to Golden Grey, which is heavier than a planet to lift but at least will not require me to use the phrase ‘wee-sludge’ ever again. Wee-sludge. Wee-sludge.

It was fine until I noticed something dark flat and shiny after pouring todays fresh litter...

I noticed a customer mention a metal piece they’d found, but I don’t think it’s metal? It seems a little brittle and wasn’t cold... maybe fiberglass? No idea, but the edges were very sharp and nearly cut my finger... just glad I discovered it rather than my lovely kitty!

I have 3 indoor/outdoor cats who share a litter box and my slimline wheelie bin was filling up really quickly with bags of conventional litter. This is very lightweight, there is no smell of cat urine and it's easy to scoop the solids every day. Being used by so many cats I change it every 2-3 weeks depending on how much time they've spent outside instead of once a month as suggested on the bag but even that has reduced the amount of household waste and made mitterbox maintenance much more pleasant. It doesn't mask the poo smell at all but that just ensures it gets cleaned straight away!

You have found it! Cat litter that actually does what is promised. This litter doesn’t clump. To be honest, I never witnessed the popular litters clump unless the soggy, wet mess that was left at the bottom of the tray counted as that? I was under the impression it meant it clumped so spoiled litter could easily be removed... That doesnt happen.

This litter doesn’t need to clump. After over a week or so with two mostly indoor cats I have managed to empty number twos successfully without starting an evolutionary process where my nose seals up. I wouldn’t say it smells great close up, but it stops that horrific odour around the room that can build up. If I was using the most popular brand of litter still after this time, I would be living in a hazmat suit.

The downside is that it’s expensive and I have a large litter tray to fill... one bag filled it once. At least in the duration it lasts you get your money’s worth though! And worth the extra for the reduction of smell!

i use this product to remove condensation that accumulates over night in the car mainly during the winter . i filled a mans old sock with silica knot the end and then put it inside the other sock and knot end then leave on parcel shelf or under seat of the car and it draws the moisture out of the air. hence no misted up or iced up windscreen inside your car .first class product

I have mobility issues, so cleaning the box multiple times a day like you really need to with clumping litters was becoming difficult for me. This litter has been a life saver! All the pee is absorbed, and there is no mushy mess in the bottom of the box like when I tried doing this with a clay or paper pellet litter, no clumps needing removed like with the corn/walnut, and no pee smell as the days go on like I had with any of the before mentioned. I just scoop out the poop real quick every other day or so. The box stays extremely dry, then I just change it out once I see the crystals going yellow. Bonus my cat also can't seem to kick this out of the box and make a huge mess like she usually would do with any other litter. And believe me she has tried lol! Overall planning to stick with this litter going forward.

Well I'm not going to name names but my three cats use an excellent electric litter tray and the blue crystals (subtle hint) are very expensive. However, because they arrive in a sturdy cardboard tray compatible with my electric cat litter machine, I'm sort of forced to use them. Thankfully the cardboard tray is sturdy enough for several uses and that's where the Pettex product comes in handy as a much cheaper substitute. The manufacturers should be savvy enough to offer their granules in a similar sized cardboard tray ... just saying. :-)
