Souffle Girl
5.0 out of 5 starsFirst in what promises to be a very enjoyable series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 August 2019
You only have to look at that series title to know you're going to be in for a treat. As a huge fan of series like Call the Midwife and Doc Martin, I knew this was going to be a pleasure to read when I saw it was the first in the new Cornish Midwives series. I wasn't wrong.
Following a major personal embarrassment that went viral on social media, Ella returns to her home town of Port Agnes in beautiful Cornwall to take up a position as a midwife at the local unit. She is soon making her rounds, getting to know the expectant mothers in the Port Agnes area, sharing in their joys and fears and becoming part of their lives at one of the most important times they will ever experience.
Not all the mums-to-be are having an easy time. With phobias and unexpected pregnancies, some of them need Ella's help more than others. Then there's Tara, whose husband seems to be the most selfish and uncaring of fathers-to-be. When Ella spots him in a compromising situation in a local pub, her opinion of him sinks even lower. But is there more to Dan than she realises?
The Cornish countryside and the rural community comes alive in this novel. A sense of place is always important to me, and I could quite picture myself on the Cornish coast, eating pasties and listening to the cry of the gulls, as I read.
There's a strong cast of supporting characters and I'm sure many of them will feature in future books in this series. There's plenty of scope for more stories, as the midwives not only go about their work, but deal with all the twists and turns in their private lives, too.
Jo Bartlett is a lovely writer, and I always know I'm guaranteed a good read when I pick up one of her books. I'm looking forward to the next instalment in this delightful new series and can't wait for my next trip to Cornwall!

1.0 out of 5 starsRepetitive, cliched.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 August 2021
There was so much repetition in this, does the author think her readers have ADD? The first few chapters were the heroine’s almost wedding, then her return to Cornwall. The reasons for her return were repeated again and again through the book, along with details of her old flame and why she left. When the author needed more filler, it felt like so many chapters needed another paragraph about why she became a midwife, her parents’ struggles to conceive and again, her flight from London. It felt in some ways like GCE English, read and remember, there is an exam at the end.
And, it felt like it was set in the 1950s , albeit updated with mobile phones and internet infuencers.
It felt like an unsuccessful attempt at Call The Midwife, Cornish version. Cliched, repetitive and the heroine is nauseatingly nice, to everyone. There was no tension, the outcomes were screamingly apparent from the beginning. I am sorry I wasted time and money on this. Another author for the never again list.

If you are a fan of Call the midwife or a fan of Cornwall then this is the book for you. The book explores Ella and her past. Ella comes back to live in Port Agnes and gets drawn back into the community that she grew up in.
Read as friendships and relationships blossom and enjoy a few hours down in Cornwall.

Looking forward to the next book in the series!

The worn out formula of will she, won't she. Angst ridden, neurotic woman vascillating about !ove. Give me strength! Are we really to believe that this high powered career woman is such a lame brain when it comes to her personal life? I read it because I am from Cornwall, even this was disappointing. The background hardly had any realistic impact, the characters were weak, with just the odd vaguely Cornish name chucked t
o give a tad of credibility.

Cornwall, mums and babies, and romance. What’s not to like in this feel-good story?
But life back home in lovely Port Agnes was never going to be straightforward for Ella. When she had a brush with fame on the fated day of her wedding, she couldn’t have foretold how far-reaching its effect would be. As Ella’s life eases back on track, helped by her busy job as a midwife and all the hard work and emotion it involves, and cheered on by her mum and dad and friends, old and new, she begins to see how love could once again be a part of that life. But not everyone wishes Ella well, and it isn’t only a pregnant woman who is in danger. Jo Bartlett is known for her stylish brand of story-telling, and this book is another gem. I raced through to the end, wanting to know how all the story threads worked out. Can’t wait for the next Cornish Midwives book!

Ella Mehenick a senior midwife is due to marry Weller in her home town Port Angus Cornwall, both are career aimers in London but Weller let's her down that we find out why later in the story. She decides to stick around and take up the offer of a six months contract as a community midwife in Port Angus she couldn't face going back to London yet. Bumping into her ex childhood sweetheart Dan Ferguson they learn to be friends again and her social life with her work colleges is getting interesting. This is a perfect read set in the picturesque settings of Cornwall and the job is never the same with unexpected births in unexpected places. the midwives are only just beginning with their stories so is Ella going to stay put? A super start to a new series, heart warming, feel good book. I loved it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A sweet read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 October 2021

This was an easy, enjoyable read, albeit with some pretty meaty themes - parents’ expectations of their children, early death of parents, housing affordability in Cornwall, teenage pregnancy, infertility and when do we feel we have achieved success, to name a few. Maybe these were more meaningful to me as a 54 year old and with a bit more life experience but the characters were (mostly) realistic and the themes weren’t dealt with in a ‘heavy’ way. I did feel Dan was a bit too good to be true, and that Ella’s change of heart after hearing Lissy’s explanation was a bit too easy, but it made for a sweet tale. I’m not sure it was captivating enough for me to want to read more in this series.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lost interest part way through - not exactly an advert for Cornwall!

I liked the premise of the story but I soon lost interest because so many of the locals were unpleasant insular bigots. Ella's dad was the worst. I think we were supposed to be amused at how much they hated 'outsiders coming here taking our jobs and homes' but if you replace the over-used word 'emmet' with 'foreigner', the locals start to sound like in-bred racists rather than quirky locals.
Apart from that, the dilemma facing Ella and Dan was not worthy of all the angst . Run, Dan, while you can.

I couldn't wait for this book to be released, I had enjoyed Jo's other books so much and read the lot and thoroughly loved them all so when this one came up for pre-order my name was down as fast as I could get it!! And I was delighted that I did. Just like her other books I loved the heroine from the first minute, the first chapter was so different and. unusual that I simply couldn't put the book down. The characters are so likeable, the setting is fab, there was nothing I didn't like about it. I'm hoping there's not too long to wait till her next!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A modern day Call The Midwife

I had a feeling before starting this book that it would grab my interest, due to the title. As a big fan of Call The Midwife, I was expecting a sort of modern day version and I wasn't wrong.
The midwives, parents to be and long lost loves are all likeable characters and you just cannot help rooting for the happy outcome.
A pleasure of a read from start to finish. Looking forward to reading book 2 in the series.
