5.0 out of 5 starsWorks great on PS5
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 August 2021
Just installed this in the PS5 (as I am on the beta test for the latest patch) and can confirm it works fine. I coupled it with a Glotrend £12.99 heatsink (one sided as I bought the 1TB drive), and the PS5 instantly recognised it and reported it was capable of 6999mb/s. I moved a number of PS5 games across to it, and they are all playing with no issues.

To install I just flipped off the top of the PS5, removed the expansion plate, unscrewed the screw inside the slot (and removed the small silver ring), gently slotted the drive (now with heatsink stuck on top) into the slot of the left, and pushed down, put the silver ring into the whole under the screw (so the drive sat on top of it), and screwed the screw back in. I didn't replace the drive cover to allow air in, and then replaced the PS5 top. And rebooted.
Took about 4 minutes.

Recommended.

Absolutely fuming with this drive. I'm running the beta version on my PS5, should work no issue. However I installed and it was dead.

My PS5 lights up and then spent around 20 seconds hanging, then it just turned off. No attempts could rectify this. As soon as I took it out the PS5 booted no problem.

I back installed to standard firmware and then back to beta, made sure everything was up to date but again it wouldn't start with it. Exactly the same issue, blue lights, no HDMI signal and then off.

I tried it in my pc and what do you know? My pc wouldn't post for half an hour. When it finally did my pc was locked completely on bios logo screen, keyboard was locked, mouse wasn't lit. As soon as I removed it my pc booted!

Spoke to Sony who instantly said that the drive is at fault and they even told me they've had reports for this drive doing the same with others.

I'm going to pick a different brand. Waste of a an afternoon and for nothing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent performance, reliable and very easy to install.

The media could not be loaded.
I held off for long enough on buying an expansion hard drive for my PS5, it was time to take the plunge. I've had a PS5 since release day, and haven't really needed the additional storage space as to be totally honest all I've been playing since then is older PS4 games. But, in a couple of months Gran Turismo 7 and Horizon Zero Dawn will be released so I wanted to be ready.

There are many different NVMe M2 expansion options available, but the most universally well received one is the WD_850 Black by Western Digital. Available in 500MB, 1TB and 2TB, the 1TB is the most realistic option for most people. It stikes the best balance of storage versus cost. The next choice is whether you want to buy the expansion with or without a heat sink. Be in no mistake, you will require a heat sink if you're installing this into a PS5. This component runs very hot and you run the real danger of damaging your expensive upgrade, and taking all your precious gaming data with it, if you don't have a heat sink. You can buy the WD Black without a heat sink, and add a third-party one for £10-20, and likely save yourself a few quid if you're confident about positioning the heat sink correctly. I was quite happy to let a tried and tested manufacturing process do it for me and take any risk of me messing it up out of the equation. So, I went for the 1TB with heat sink fitted.

Installation is really easy. In fact, if you've had experience of upgrading the hard drive in a PS4 or PS4 Pro you'll appreciate how laughably easy it is. No backing up to the cloud first, then removing the existing drive, formatting your new drive before installing, fitting it, waiting for hours for your data to come back from the cloud. Nope, it's 2 minute job if you know what you're doing. I've uploaded a video of me installing it for the first time. There's no clever editing, it really was the first time I'd done that. All I'd done before I filmed it was to get the knack of removing the base of the PS5 and find the right screwdriver bit.

To install it, you turn the PS5 upside down (horizontally), remove the base plate (the knack is to lift up and pull towards you at the same time), remove the silver SSD compartment lid which is held down by a single screw, remove the single screw inside the compartment and move the metal ring from the hole marked 110 to the hole marked 80, insert the WD Black into the slot and fix it into place with the screw you've just removed. Replace the silver lid and tighten back down with the fixing screw and then replace the cover. That's it.

As an aside, I've since discovered that it is very important to replace that silver compartment lid. Many believe it should be left off to aid cooling, but the compartment is designed to receive ventilation from the sides and this designed airflow can be interupted if you leave the lid off.

Lastly, reconnect your console and power up. As you can see on my video you get a few screens which will take you through the formatting process, and shortly you'll be back at your PS5 home screen. You can now install games to the WD Black, or move existing games across to it. Go to the Settings menu in the top corner and then to Storage and everything you need will be in there.

I've been running it for a while now and I've been totally satisfied with the performance. Cheaper expansion options are available, but I'm confident that I've chosen one of the best hard drives out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars More storage on the ps5 taking it up to 1tb

If you find that your ps5 is running low on memory which you will, then this m.2 ssd is for you, well your ps5 actually. Takes roughly 5 minutes to install, it’s a bit fiddly trying to remove the template of the ps5 as you can’t help but feel apprehensive at doing this especially as it’s not a cheap gaming unit, so for me that actually took the longest time, but once off it’s quick - just be careful not to drop the black screws in the fan as it’s right next to where you will be removing the metal plate the the inner screw with the little ring, be sure to put on the 2nd hole from the top, then angle the drive in, screw back in place and put the metal cover back also. And as you have the cover off this is a good time to blow out the fluff on the fan, as I had a little gathering up there - just a tip. Not bad for a year to have very little fluff on the outer fan. So once all back together it’s the case screwing the base back on how you had it and powering up, message pops up m.2 ssd format - yes, so you have the storage off the ps5 and this, so theoretically you get 1tb, well just bit less as the ps5 storage has the 512 kept aside. However if like me I have wd 1tb passport connected to us usb which use for the PS4 games and the main ps5 and m.2 ssd solely for ps5 content only. And another point, it’s quick at loading the game up as no lagging.
So I hop this helps you guys. Is issues ask a question and I’ll try to help.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super quick, but you need the right hardware

Super fast drive, but you need to know what you’re doing before just buying!
Firstly if you want the fastest speeds you need a motherboard which supports PCIE v4 if you’ve an older board then you can expect speeds of half what it states.
In my case, as an Intel chipset, so mine is paired with a Z590 board.
Again if you’re Intel, you’ll need an 11th gen chip or it won’t support v4 speeds. So again in my case I’ve got an i7 11700k.
Once Windows was installed, which was super quick, the machine fly’s! Load times are almost instant, boot to windows is sub 10 seconds easy!
If you’ve the right hardware or are upgrading, this drive is fantastic. If you’ve older hardware then save your pennies and look at other options.

I was part of the PS5 firmware 2.0 beta test that allowed SSD expansion, this particular drive had been on my radar since the PS5 launched, so I took the plunge to see how it worked, alongside a monster heatsink!

It's perfect, in many ways better than the stock SSD on the device. If you need more space in your PS5 and want the best performance, look no further than this excellent product

I doubt this beats my firecuda in the speed tests, but in the price bracket not a bad 2tb drive by any means.
Transfer speeds just under the ones specified on the specs sheet so really good.

I think my firecuda would be wasted in the ps5 for the money, but equally this isn't that much cheaper and its hard to justify this nvme over the segate.

Great drive more than fast enough and works perfectly, I only use this for ps4 content on the ps5 and apps, just to reduce the internal storage usage.

Great drive but if you can afford the firecuda over this then I would get the segate over the WD any day, more of a personal preference in terms of quality for me.

Either nvme is a great choice, if you're using this for a boot drive on a PC then get the segate, if it's for a ps5 then I'd lean towards the WD purely for cost to performance ratio.
