Dangerously unreliable

The needle doesn’t sit squarely in its pivot point or move freely. Direction finding is consequently unreliable. This is a dangerous item that could cause havoc to hill walkers relying on it. Better to spend more on a properly built item from a company that cares about your safely. I would never take this item into the hills or lend it to anyone. You buy cheap and get rubbish - mea culpa.

Like another reviewer has said, this item clearly has a dangerously faulty manufacturing or design error. The compass needles does not move freely and therefore can not be relied upon to be pointing to mag north.

Inaccurate and poor workmanship

Really disappointed about this product. I ordered 2 of them and found one to have a bubble, and to have the north not line up with the arrow.

The other one is lined up, but has some strange white mark inside the compass housing, probably some excess glue.

They've also made the puzzling choice of having two red lines to dial the bearing, with the expectation that you'd put your desired bearing between the lines, resulting in about +-4° of error. Not a great choice.

This was for my son, he had asked for it. It’s going in the bin as it doesn’t register true north. Having seen the reviews since buying it, there appears to be a problem with the product. Certainly would not recommend it.

The speedy delivery was great however on looking at the compass, the red points to the South rather than North.

I anticipate a slightly more confusing course due to this.

Not acurate and no declination adjustment !

Terrible "compass" that should not be relied upon.
Insufficient magnetism to work accurately so needle wanders around aimlessly and despite claiming to have a declination adjustment there is not. Pretty useless for anything other than pointing a terrestrial TV mast in roughly the right direction.

Buy cheap pay twice

Maybe I am being a bit harsh, but a compass can be not just an item of convenience, but also safety.

I ordered one of these for my boy to use in scouts but upon trying it myself, I decided it was in no way accurate or reliable enough to ensure he could use it effectively.

Visually it looks ok and decently made. However the deal breaker was how long it takes the needle to settle, due to lack of damping and how it snags on the body of the compass, which prevents the needle giving a stable and unambiguous reading. Given time, a reasonably accurate bearing can be taken if one is careful to hold the compass in a way that avoids snagging the needle and allows it to settle. However, once you start moving on a walk and change direction, the needle will move, snag and make it impossible to follow an accurate course.

With a tiny bit more attention to stabilising the needle to prevent snags and damping its motion, this could be a great little compass. But as it is, I decided to return it and get a Silva for nearly double the cost and it was worth it.

Hi, I should have returned this boy scout compass when it arrived because when o tried ot on my garden it gave me false results. I took it orienteering with me late last month and again last week both times the compass gave me false readings frustrating me and my partner as we came last. We were lost! I appreciate it is now outside of the 30 day return policy but would appreciate the seller either supplying a workable replacement or refunding my purchase price.

This was a total waste of money. I recommend buying a reputable brand instead, even though it's more expensive. I had to replace this one after the first time I tried to rely on in a "proper" walk.

It does point vaguely North, but when you rotate the compass so that the N on the bezel aligns with the needle, the needle turns quite a bit too - and doesn't go back, so it ends up pointing maybe 30 degrees away from its original direction. Which means you never have any confidence in it because a quick twist and it gives you a different direction.

A compass you can't trust is pointless.

The compass poles arent on line. North and south are skewed from.each other. There is also a huge bubble in the fluid which males it useless as the bubble will push the needle off of the direction.

Do not buy this. If youre using it to navigate, you will most certainly get lost.
