A great book. This is the most insight I have had on Thrawn after all these years. In the books Thrawn always seems to be playing his own long game. Even his own people the Chiss do not understand and him. Some see greatness in him others see great danger.

I actually like this version of Thrawn away from the Imperials. Yes he is a militery man through and through, but he shows more compassion in his attitude and tactics here. Also he does an incredible job of mentoring his subordinates. Though he claims not to understand the political games, he earns life long loyalty from those that are close to him.

I also like that older school touches. The pathfinders and the Chiss' own version of them who "find" new hyperspace routes to get to certain destinations quicker. Extended Universe will remember the brother and sister found their way in the Golden Age of the Sith.

This book follows a younger, slightly less experienced but brilliant Thrawn doing what he need to do the save the Ascendancy. There are also his older memories of him coming up the ranks. There are also Awesome side characters that I really hope are explored further. A couple of the have made a appearance in other Disney era Star Wars book and series already. Another brilliant touch was linking this book to Thrawn Alliances. It was a small touch but to a continuity lover like me it was awesome and hearing the conversation from Thrawn's was a nice touch. I am really looking forward to the next book in the trilogy, and I want to know the final fate of Thrawn post Rebels.

2.0 out of 5 starsPROOF READERS? HA HA BUDGET CUTS SACKED THEM
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 September 2020
This story is good, but as someone who has to read every word instead of skim reading there are so many things the proof reader and publisher missed, and it’s not just once or twice in the whole book every chapter has at least one error and some have up to five that really takes away from being able to be absorbed into the story as a reader

I found the story not to be as fluid as the previous 3, nonetheless it had some moment's where I struggled to finish it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not read yet however it came damaged.

I spent £15 on a paperback book which is more than normal for me, so when It came today and I got it out it was clear to see straight away that the pages had been soaked previously. Some of the ink on some of the pages seem a bit faded too. Very disappointed with the quality of the product, however this is more likely an issue at the warehouse than the actual book itself.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best. But not bad.

This book was ok, not much going on to be honest. Very boring characters apart from thrawn himself and the memory sections of the book were to my opinion a waste of time. But it was a simple read and killed a few hours so cant really moan that much. Worth a read but wait until it's on sale.

3.0 out of 5 stars An underwhelming backstory of an overpowered character

I, like many of you, have been reading Star Wars books since at least the 90's. For the first of the new canon Thrawn trilogy I gave Timothy Zahn a pass as he had to re-write his character's introduction for the new Disney era of Star Wars. That is tough to do particularly when Heir to the Empire is one of the best Star Wars books out there. I still prefer this previous novel than the new trilogy, but this is what happen when re-writing something from before.

Here is my issue with this first offering in the Thrawn prequal trilogy: there is nothing different. Thrawn is the same, and already perfect at everything. We see no character development, we see know early days of Thrawn, and although I really do enjoy the backstory of the Chiss it feels sadly underwhelming. If this book had showed Thrawn making more mistakes or learning to read alien art and not quite figuring it out at first that would have been great. The other obstacle I have is with Disney Star Wars making every villain into someone we must be sympathetic with. Why? I enjoyed Thrawn much more when he is a baddy and somehow the good guys luck wins the day over the baddies superior intellect. This dynamic is being watered down in new Star Wars and I cannot say that it is an improvement.

Also, my brand new book from this seller arrived with a creased dust jacket. Not cool Amazon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sticky stuff all over cover
Reviewed in the United States on 29 October 2020

I have to say I have read and love all the Thrawn books that have come out even the older originals so my 3 star rating has nothing to do with the quality of the story, I would happily give that 5 stars. My only complaint is that when I received my book it had some kind of sticky residue all over the sleeve and it was really gross so I don't know what's up with that. I really love the blue pages and the color scheme with the white, red, black, and blue and was hoping that I could just pull off the sleeve and keep the same asthetic, unfortunately the main cover of the book itself is just solid black which was quite the disappointment. I would have loved to at least see some kind of design on the cover itself even if it was just the title of the book but there was nothing so from that viewpoint I give the physical book itself 3 stars. I would definitely by this book again if they had some kind of special edition hardcover with a design or something though.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre. Curious to see if the other books can salvage the story

I very much enjoy the character of Thrawn. This book seemed to miss the mark however. It was a departure from the traditional novels. I do like the expansion into another realm of Star Wars so for that I can appreciate where I believe the series will go. I will definitely keep reading, but this book was not overly well received. Drawn out and slow moving story many times throughout the book. Hang in there... it picks up.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good background on the Chiss; setup for next books

This was a pretty entertaining book. More background on Thrawn and his people, including a fair amount of culture/traditions etc. the backstory is interesting. This smacks strongly of simply a setup for the next books in this trilogy, but it was definitely worth a read.
