Ideal for my old non-smart TV

Our bedroom TV is a relatively old, flat screen wall-mounted TV which is 'not smart'. We use a digital aerial to get freeview channels but wanted a few more options. We are not that tech savvy so I did a little research before purchasing. The only HDMI port on my TV is to the rear so was aware that it would be difficult to plug the Firestick directly in to the TV. However I had a spare HDMI cable (both ends male HDMI connectors) which I plugged in to my TV. I then bought a cheap female HDMI adaptor (small connector with two female HDMI ports) and plugged the cable from my tv in to one of the female ports and the Firestick in to the other. I followed the really easy instructions that came with the Firestick and was able to get it connected to my WiFi and up and running in no time. Setting up the Firestick remote so that it can control the tv (volume etc) was fairly simple. The Firestick enables me to log in to my paid subscription services (Netflix and Prime) but also access free content such as All 4, You Tube, ITV Hub, BBC iPlayer etc. I had not previously been able to access these free or subscription services on the bedroom TV due to it being 'not smart'. The services will usually require you to register for an account but it does not cost for services such as ITV Hub, iPlayer, All 4 etc which are free (Netflix, Prime etc will require a subscription if you want to use them). The picture is really clear and the streaming works fine with my broadband. I can use the Firestick remote with voice control OK, though I tend to work with the buttons out of preference. The only thing that I cannot do using the Firestick remote is switch inputs so I still need to use my original TV remote when I wish to switch back to content from the digital aerial rather than watch content through the HDMI input (Firestick). This is not a problem as original remote still in good order - I have googled this issue and think it is to do with the age and set up of my TV so will not be an issue for some. Really pleased with the purchase and the additional options it provides for my old telly. Apologies for the long winded review - I just felt it might be useful to people like me who didn't really understand what a Firestick could do!

Utter junk, slow and cumbersome.

Amazon have ruined the fire tv stick over the years, it’s counter intuitive to move around. Slow to download apps, constantly looses wifi signal, just utter rubbish now.
Update, and I knew this would happen, Amazon tried to contact me to talk me through a factory reset, the solution to all their developers shortcomings… so, me, the customer, has to reset, have to download all the apps again, input all user names and passwords, again, all in an attempt to save their developers making something that works properly and reliably.
My time should not be taken up resolving developer issues.

Saw a few bad reviews for this but its brill love the quick buttons - love the tv controls, it’s not slow it doesn't lag its fine! Recently got rid of sky so the fire sticks all I use so the TV controls are so good! The tvs about 10 years old and synced up perfectly :)

Better than Roku with regards to picture quality, and far more environmentally friendly packaging and unlike the Roku you can switch the unit off. Yet to have it long enough to comment on reliability or use customer support, but both can't be any worse . Also although an Amazon product navigation to Netflix proved to be a breeze with only the background on the start up screen being weighted towards Amazon (Roku does the same with Roku TV)

Review for the new 2021 Firestick with Alexa remote.

I upgraded from a 1st Gen firestick. To be honest I almost wasn't going to as I figured it couldn't be much of an upgrade over the 1st gen that I'd gotten used to suffering with, which to be frank was a laggy and slow bit of barely usable garbage by now lol.

I took the punt after a lot of review searching and product comparisons and oh wow, this new one is literally life changing in regards to my streaming TV and movie needs!

It is soo fast, literally no lag in menus and apps downloaded + installed in seconds, literally. (Using my AC 5Ghz connection, which this model supports finally)

Streaming quality is indistinguishable from Sky Q (I tried them side by side using Netflix and amazon videos) to us and it didn't lag or have any buffering issues at all on any of the other freeview apps.

I don't really use Alexa, so can't comment on usability with other devices etc.
But I did give it a little play with on the firestick and it was great at doing what I asked, bringing up the correct episodes, showing the weather (although it was in Fahrenheit not celcius) etc.
If you personally do use Alexa, I'm sure you'd find this option very useful.

I'll now be using this new firestick with BBC iplayer, ITV hub, Channel 4, My5, Netflix and Prime video to replace my Sky Q subscription. (You could always pick up a NowTV sub if you want more premium channels)

Long story short, this new stick has got to be at least 10x faster than my 1st gen in just pure performance and usability. The ability to take advantage of 5Ghz AC connection makes streaming quality flawless too.

Would happily recommend this to anyone wanting to replace an expensive TV subscription with an honestly surprising, really really good streaming device!

Or if you've got an old gen firestick like I had, then trust me, you will be blown away by the difference between the two.

Very simple to install. Have a fire tv box downstairs and this one copied all my apps from that on prompt. Even picked up the WiFi password so didn't even have to put that in. Dedicated Disney button on this remote too as well as netflix so quick to get to those apps.

Hideously slow update from my former Amazon Firestick which I purchased because of Amazon’s assertions that it is notably faster than my previous model.

Appallingly slow automatic “software” update. Took nearly 40 minutes and I have super fast broadband with a minimum download guarantee of 120mb ps.

When it eventually “springs into life” you are given an activation code which is sent to your smart phone to action. Problem is I don’t have a smartphone so there is literally NO WAY of activating this piece of junk without an endless journey of phone calls to their customer service team, which took in excess of an hour spread over three countries and two continents!

Eventually given access to the Prime service I am paying for and it is sooooo painfully slow, it is like trying to swim through treacle.

My lower spec model last year was infinitely more responsive until it packed up after six months and Amazon refused to exchange it without putting me through a circus of arduous tech tests I had to undertake while they were on the phone only for them to confirm that stick was indeed faulty and they would arrange an exchange, which they never did! I threw it away. Nobody needs that much grief for £30 even after just six months.

In truth I am a mug for believing their latest hype. This faulty 2021 stick is going back for a refund along with cancellation of my Prime membership which I only reopened yesterday specifically for this new Firestick.

Truly appalling and contemptuous “customer service” from Amazon. As soon as my refund is processed I am closing my account altogether and reverting to individual merchants on EBay who have a greater (and less corporate) focus on customer service and satisfaction
