How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 starsGood printer, please read my review for how to connect via Android OS.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 October 2020
This Printer is far from easy to set up via an Android operating system. One must install the 'HP Print Service Plugin' as well as the HP Smart apps before an Android system will pickup the Printer, but this is not mentioned in the guide that comes with it nor in their 'help' videos. I found I did not need the HP Smart app after I installed the HP Print Service Plugin though. I will not be signing up to receive reduced priced ink so will remove the HP Smart app. If that causes any issues, I will download it again.

After plugging in the Printer, it will only 'come alive' when you install both ink cartridges and fill the bottom tray with paper. Only after I did this, did the printer icons lit up. I pressed the 'i' button for a few seconds and it printed out the 'printer information' sheet which detailed how to connect via Wi-Fi Direct if you are having problems connecting to your WiFi. Please note that there is a WiFi indicator light which is light blue/green when the Printer is first turned on, then turns Purple when it is ready to connect to the WiFi. I struggled connecting to the WiFi till I decided to switch tactics and install the ink and load it with paper to test if the photocopying aspect at least worked...and it did. To install the ink cartridges, gently lift both side tabs on the top edge, at the same time. To fill the paper tray, gently pull both side tabs of the extension tray towards you, at the same time.

Please let me know if this has been helpful. I spent hours fiddling about and hope it cuts down the time fiddling about with it for other people, especially Android users.

I have taken pictures of the 'Printer Information Page' showing how to get instructions to connect via Wi-Fi Direct. I would have included the steps I printed out but each printer might have its own Password and unique I.D so please follow your own Printer's steps. I have also taken pictures of the top and bottom trays opened.

You know those frustrating experiences where nothing works as intended?
And you spend all day trying to do a 2 minute print.
That's what you're in for

The instruction leaflet has about 10 pictures, and attempts to be "smart" enough to set everything else up automatically.

First up you need to use their app, because hey, no USB cable. We're doing this on wifi.

It's not at all obvious when the printer is ready or on the wifi.
It randomly prints status sheets
The power cable is loose.

So you install the app and finally get the printer identified.
It prints out a calibration page which you're meant to scan... cool idea.
Few smudges, but it's a start.

Except you get "something went wrong".
Not "something specific", but "something".
That's it. On your own buddy.

So let's skip this.

Right next to the router btw, nothing else on the same channel, no issues getting an IP.

But then the printer vanishes.
Windows can't find it, the phone can't find it, the router doesn't think it's on the network.

So, remove the printer from the app... go to add a new one.
"Make sure it's on the wifi"

How can I get it on the wifi if I need to set it up?
Little wifi button... nada.

Try adding a new one
"My printer is not listed" (since it can't find it)
So "select your printer type".
It lists every HP model in the last 10 years but hey, not the 6000 series!
Trash.

HP's support doc "c06557114" in the URL suggests connecting directly to the printer, but the pin on the back doesn't work, the password is incorrect.

Let's try setup mode from the HP app, after holding the wifi button again for 3 seconds...
Nope, no printer.

WiFi direct printers? Nope, not there.

The HP virtual agent only has support info for Windows and Mac.
Where's all the app stuff suddenly?
The connectivity page doesnt run you through *re* connecting to the printer.

Okay, let's try a USB cable and the PC software.
117mb... stuck at 5% for several minutes.
"Unable to download the software package"
Why?

They've tried so hard to make it illiterate-proof, that it's a buggy, unintuitive mess.

Absolutely pathetic attempt on HP's part, and it should be a point of shame.

On top of that, the build quality is super questionable.
-little levers to lock down the ink cartridges, they'll snap soon
-power cable wiggles itsself out, even after ramming it in firmly
-there's flimsy plastic adjustment controls underneath that are already bent

Done with that... let's scan the doc... hah no, let's use the phone to take a pic.

Eventually I hold the wifi button for the 5th time
And the scanner finds the printer. Timing is key? It doesn't seem to *stay* in setup mode for more than a second or two.

It finds the printer, guides me back through the setup...

"ENJOY HP ACCOUNT BENEFITS"
but... the status bar is still spinning on the app?
Who wrote this trash? Am I waiting or not?
I Skip it, because this thing's getting returned...
"checking printer status"
"skip alignment" since that doesn't work
And now i'm being advertised to? Buy ink? Seriously?

Finally I get to the scan page.
There's no progress a such.
It finishes, plays a jingle (yes it's musical, like a child's toy)
I have to press "save" multiple times...
And the quality is unacceptable. 300dpi max.
Covered in bit rot. Not usable in any way.
Worse than a picture from a 2010-era sony phone

What would be nice:
-Plug it in, USB, RJ45, etc
-"tell the printer which network to use"
-printer has an obvious wifi icon, that works.
-unplug, done.

And the icing on the cake.
The print quality is terrible too.

This is a good looking printer, but it was a nightmare to set it up. I spent around 4 hours trying before enlisting the help of an expert. And I do not understand why there was only a black ink cartridge in the box, but no colour. Why ??? I now have to wait for some to be delivered and in the meantime can only print in black and white. Not the best experience!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just go for it.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 December 2020

I'm writing this so some poor schmuck doesn't have to go through the endless job of researching that I did. Have you noticed, Amazon doesn't sell anything that's crap any more? Everything has four or four and a half stars. It's got to the point where you just have to take the plunge and hope. So I did, with this little printer. And I have to say, I am very very pleased with it. Compared to my 10 year old HP printer, this one may not be as big or substantial built, but it is very efficient at what it does. The printing on both sides saves an awful lot of paper. The print quality os fine for what most families will ever need. If you want a hi-res art print on your wall, use an online service. For everyday work, this is fine. I also enrolled on the ink scheme. I hate doing this, as it's yet more direct debit going out, but so far, it's actually worked very well. The printer itself is reasonably compact, quiet and does a good job. If I had a slight issue, it would be the scanning software is very basic, but after persevering with it, I know how to get the best out of it. All in all, I would recommend this.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ink Supplied with Printer lasted for just 10 prints
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 August 2020
Style Name: HP Envy 6020Verified Purchase
I purchased this specifically to print photos for an upcoming event but managed less than 10 before the images had lines across then colours fading to pink. On contacting HP I was informed the cartridges supplied are only set up volume. I was unhappy as this was not apparent at the time of purchase,so I had to order new cartridges at over £50 as all photos need to be printed within a couple of days. The device may be okay, time will tell, but I'm not impressed. For that reason would not recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent printer in compact size

I had an HP 8460 printer which was big on the side of my desk but the features were great, the printer developed a fault which wasn't worth fixing so I looked for a similar printer but smaller. The HP Envy 6430 is without doubt the best printer I've had, space saving, ease of use, clever ways to hide pieces so as not over powering, it has everything the old printer had and more, all in all a top printer and well worth the money, highly recommend and delivery faultless

2.0 out of 5 stars Do not fall for the instant ink 5 month free trial claim
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 September 2020
Style Name: HP Envy 6032Verified Purchase
I bought this printer based on the carrot of 5 months free trial of Instant Ink. The delivery was smooth. I am not a techie so got my son to set up. He is a techie but found setting up the printer wirelessly was quite a hassle but did it eventually. I signed up immediately to Instant Ink because you have to do it within 7 days of purchase to qualify for deal. Printing with the supplied cartridges was brilliant. Double sided was easy. However, when ink ran out, problems began. Trying to find out when ink was coming and using the HP instant ink virtual assistant was useless. It was teeth grindingly irritating. Eventually, I had to sign up again to Instant Ink, having worked out that my original sign up had not registered, although I had entered all my bank details. So I have lost the 5 months free trial and am waiting to see if this time the sign up works. If it does, it is still a good deal for someone who prints out occasionally as buying the cartridges separately is quite expensive. I am giving this 2 stars on the basis of the Instant Ink 5 month free trial being a con. Otherwise the printer is very good.

good printer, scanning and copier. Print quality is good and although others in reviews seem to have struggled with the set up, my experience was positive. My complaint is the constant barrage of marketing. Whether its the PC or phone app, you have to endure the usual 'buy our ink' or 'subscribe and become broke' messages and pop ups which really gets on my tits. HP if I wanted to subscribe I would have, if I change my mind I will suss it out for myself!
