I bought this primarily for web browsing, streaming films and television (Netflix, Now TV, iPlayer, etc.) and casting music stored on the memory card I’ve inserted into it to my Sonos speakers. It arrives with Android 10 which should upgrade over time to at least Android 12. It's longer and thinner than the Galaxy Tab S3 it's replacing and you get less top and bottom borders when watching widescreen productions. The bezels are thin but wide enough for you to comfortably hold the device without obscuring the screen and I like the floating function keys that rotate with the screen. Build quality is good and it's thin and not noticeably heavy to hold.
There’s lots of preinstalled Samsung bloatware, including their 'Bixby' virtual assistant. Some of it can be uninstalled, some cannot. You’ll need to go into the settings and turn off notifications for any bloatware you don't require but can’t uninstall and there is the option to send some of it into a 'deep sleep', ensuring that it doesn’t eat up battery life and processing power.
Obviously some corners have been cut to reflect the price and the ‘Lite’ name – two speakers instead of four, TFT screen (the colour is not as rich and deep as OLED) and 4GB of RAM, but the screen, sound and overall performance and speed are impressive for a tablet in this price range. You can have a lot of apps open and running concurrently and it copes with ease. The S Pen is responsive and attaches itself to the side of the device by magnet. Ideal for artwork and writing, it's also useful for using instead of a finger in general use. Both cameras are more than adequate.
Battery life is especially good and lasts for hours and a full charge from empty takes approximately 3 hours. It arrives with a USB-C lead and a USB wall plug. I use an AmazonBasics 6' USB-C to USB-C cable and USB-C wall plug to charge the device. A full charge using this configuration takes 2 hours and it shows as 'Fast charging' in the notification panel.
I’ve inserted a 400GB San Disk Micro SD card filled with thousands of FLAC files and it casts them without problem to my Sonos speakers or I can listen to them with Bluetooth headphones (or wired - it has a 3.5mm headphone jack).
Overall, I’m very happy with this tablet. There are better and more expensive Samsung devices available, but for basic home use this is fit for purpose.
