How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsSuper simple and quite good value
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 October 2018
This was super simple to set up and does exactly what you'd expect. I use it with a table lamp whose switch is hard to reach. Saying "Alexa, TV lamp off" is so much easier than crawling behind the furniture! You can call the plug whatever you want in the Alexa app and add it to 'groups' for actions like switching all your stuff off with one command.

Physically, it's a very simple white box and not too big so will fit into any room and control anything you plug into it.

To use this you need an Echo device and a smartphone or tablet with the Alexa app on it.

I can see me buying a few of these.

3.0 out of 5 starsI wish it was smart(er).
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 November 2018
Oh dear, not smart enough. It is a plug, you ask Alexa to switch it on, or to switch off. It does nothing else. I had hoped you could ask Alexa to turn in on for a number of hours, then it will automatically switch off (for our clothes drier), but that sort of option does not appear available. I have spent a couple of hours playing with the Alexa app to see if it is my misunderstanding, but sadly not, it switches on or off at that time. I may as well just flick the switch! The only benefit I can see is you could switch off the plug remotely.

Unless it improves dramatically in terms of functionality, it is not an effective addition to a smart home and certainly not worth the asking price if you are capable of reaching and flicking a switch.

Update to review
===============
Revisions within the app have led to some progress. I have been able to put together a routine that allows me to tell Alex to turn on the plug for an hour, then turn the plug off. Alexa will say in confirmation that the routine is running. This would be neat if I could put together one routine that asked for the number of hours, but that is not possible, so the only (messy) solution would be to put together 24 seperate routines, one for each hour in a 24hr period. This does not take into account half hours! 24 routines is ridiculous, as is the number I have actually created, which is 12.

What is required is the ability, inbuilt within Alexa to say:
"Alexa, turn on the plug for X hours".
"Alexa, turn on the plug at 3pm and off at 4pm".
"Alexa, turn off the plug in X hours".

Features like this would be useful.

I have upped my review from 1 to 3 stars because there has been progress, but not enough progress for this plug to be called "smart" by any definition I would like to apply. I have attached a screen shot of the routine for one hour.

Used to control mini Christmas tree lights - a very small load

After just 1 day it tripped all electrics in our house and burnt Amazon plug 🔥. A quick look through reviews shows I’m not the only customer - is this a known problem?

Confirmed no fault with tree lights.

Very concerning! Looks like a fire risk to me.

Unsafe. Mine has just tripped the whole of my downstairs and there is a nasty burning smell. Plug is black in sections, yet another return back to Amazon. It would be good to know how many of these units are causing electric faults.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not good at all!!!!

I had been waiting for THE Amazon smart plug foolishly thinking it would be great in comparison to a "generic one", unfortunately very disappointed! I may have got a rouge one, who knows? but, it took 3 attempts to pair with my dot and when it eventually paired it worked perfectly well with voice commands, but the interface with the alexa app and attempts to program it (on/off-days of the week) failed miserably, the user interface on the app is not good at all, so all in all extremely disappointing, returned for a full refund (no problem) purchased a eufyhome plug (from elsewhere) and that works a treat, the app interface is sooo easy and the plug will pair to be operated via alexa, but the dedicated eufyhome app is a breeze in comparison - sorry amazon.

1.0 out of 5 stars I saw some deals on the "Black Friday event" I decided that it was time to try a couple of Smart Plugs and some Smart bulbs

Well what a let down. Having had an Echo Dot for several months testing the DOT for a third party product, I saw some deals on the "Black Friday event" I decided that it was time to try a couple of Smart Plugs and some Smart bulbs.

The deal on this plug made it one obvious choice to me, as it should be a perfect match and do every conceivable thing that the plugs are capable of !! How wrong can one be and you can't even use an alternative App to set up some extra basic functions. As an onother reviewer commented it's reasonably good at turning on or off within a very limited range of the router.. Beyond that if you use the PC "ALEXA App" it is useless and you can't change the name from "FIRST PLUG" as a description, even if you have successfuly changed it on the phone APP and it doesn't really have an App to itself. The phone verson of the APP is equally useless for it as "create a routine" which one would expect this to allow you to set something like set on at 17.00 and off at 01.00 but NO, some daft suggestions for the whole network more Echo device settings than the actual plug.

I also bought https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07D35MJMJ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
WiFi Smart Plug Smart Socket, Hompie Smart Switch Power Outlet Timing Function with USB Port Applicable to Alexa Echo Google Assistant, No Hub Required, via APP Control or Voice Command (1 Pack)  which is £10 compared to £25 for the Amazon plug, What a difference in functionality, features and overall performance.

This plug has a decent WI-FI range, uses the "Smart Life" app which allows you to set a schedule of turning on and off at various times, changing the brightness and "temparature" of linked bulbs using the APP and lots of other tasks and things which you would have thought that AMAZON would have incorporated into their plug. It also has a constantly live USB port for charging your phone overnight and eliminating the need for a separate charger.

The deal that I got was for a 3rd Gen. Echo Dot and this plug for £10 more. (the expected date for the DOT keeps moving back from date originally promised of about today, to the current expected date of 11-12 Dec. !!)

I forsee tears before bedtime if a customer's FIRST experience of Echo and it's Smart tech from AMAZON is this deal as, due to the delay in delivery of the DOT, the plug alone is pretty useless to them. I see a flood of returns and disappointed customers going to Google as this "package" should be a "Flagship product match", showing the potential of the ALEXA with linked products before the outlay of buying other products which it definately isn't !!

COME ON AMAZON WAKE UP !!!

I'm pretty much used to it at this point. It's a recurring theme with the Alexa brand, whatever Amazon promises, you can be sure it won't work as advertised until 2-3 month later.
It's impossible for me to setup this "smart" plug, nothing works.

My plug tripped out today after I turned off the Xmas tree lights via Alexa. They had been on for several hours with no problem. As soon as they went off I knew there was a problem as I heard a pop from the unit. After digging around in the reviews it has become apparent these are a potential fire hazard with two reviewers experiencing overheating and burning smell. In my opinion this is totally unacceptable. We shall not be using Amazon smart plugs.
