5.0 out of 5 starsNew Fire TV Lite is a fantastic budget streaming device! Upgrade!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 September 2020
I own the previous non-4k model, and this is a much better experience. First off, It's faster than previous fire sticks. No more menu lag. Things are smoother and faster overall. The user interface is snappier and more responsive all around, unlike the older Fire Stick, which does occasionally lag. It's crisp and clear, and intuitive to operate - and set-up is a piece of cake.

If you are wondering whether an elderly or technophobic person can handle the setup process, the answer is yes. The onscreen prompts guide you through everything, and should be easy for anyone to follow, even if don't consider yourself tech savvy. And in terms of the physical hardware, there are only like 2 steps: 1) Connect the Stick to a power source 2) Plug the Stick into any open HDMI port, which you'll find on the back or side of your TV.

Also, If you're wondering if the Fire TV Stick (with TV controls) suits you more. I would say it’s a question of personal preference. The Fire TV Stick Lite version does not support Dolby Atmos audio and the included Alexa Voice Remote Lite does not have power or volume buttons. Personally, the Lite version is fine for me as I have another remote which controls my TV’s volume and power button and I do not have a soundbar. However, I would recommend anyone with different devices connected to their TV such as soundbars to buy the Fire TV Stick (with TV controls) version as this would allow you to control everything all at once, however it is slightly higher in price compared to this one.

Finally If you're wondering whether the Lite version is a gimmick or whether it's worth it, the answer is: it's worth it, because it's as if they ironed out all the little kinks and pain points to get the user to their chosen content as quickly as possible. All the little improvements in terms of the speed/function, and the upgraded Alexa remote with the new “guide” button which takes you straight to your videos makes the Lite version a pleasure to use.
Amazon needs to keep up the good work. This Lite stick is a solid product and an excellent upgrade (for those on a budget) from the previous model. Hope this helps!

3.0 out of 5 starsLike any other Firestick, but with one irritating feature....so far
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 October 2020
All functionality is quick and responsive as you would expect so can't be faulted in that respect.

However, if, like me, you might side load some additional Apps onto your Firestick, which are not linked to your Amazon Account, you might see that the image / icon for the App does not appear in your Apps list and instead you get a "greyed out" box. The App will install and work fine once you open it, but the obvious visual for it is missing on your home screen and My Apps lists and if you have a few of them, you will have to guess which app you are opening. Example pictured.

This Fire TV Lite OS is Version 7.2.2.3, presumably bang up to date, and this does not happen (in my experience) with previous OS on the 4k Stick for example which is version 6.2.7.3.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and Factory resets but it is still the same. Might this be a "glitch" with the latest OS, Version 7, that needs fixing?

4.0 out of 5 stars Next time think I'd get the one with TV controls.

Works really well, loads of channels to choose from and I'm not on prime or anything, so I just get the free stuff. In terms of setting up, it took almost no effort, which on one hand made was great, on the other, was a little worrying. I assume it connected with the echo dot I have and got all the WiFi details from that, because I didn't have to do anything to connect it and when I checked the details for the connection, it was connected to the correct network with the correct password.

In terms of appearance, fits behind the TV neatly and takes power from one of the TVs USB ports, so it's basically invisible. I'm on basic broadband, so speeds of upto 8MB/s and picture quality etc seems great, but I also live alone, so perhaps if you had more people taking up the bandwidth it might have issues.

I've not used it a lot, when I bought my house it had a TV wall mount in a room I don't really watch TV in, so bought a cheap TV to cover it only to realise that there were no satellite or aerial sockets in the room. Tried a couple of different indoor aerials, but could only ever get a couple of channels, this essentially makes the TV viable again, though it doesn't get a lot of use.

Voice controls seem fine, but the TV doesn't automatically go into standby when you put the firestick into sleep mode, so the control with a TV standby button would probably have been better.

Have lowered my rating by one star as have just found out there is no voice command to put the firestick itself into sleep mode, you have to do it manually.

4.0 out of 5 stars Where's the volume buttons?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 December 2021
Configuration: Device onlyVerified Purchase
Already have a 4k Fire stick on the living room TV, and this pretty much has all the features that does (except 4k stuff of course). Set it up on my daughter's TV today and for some reason, unlike the 4k remote, this remote doesn't have volume buttons on! I know it doesn't have them on the pictures on the product page, but it didn't even dawn on me 'till I started using it that it felt weird after being used to the 4k remote. What reason is there for not having them on, it must only save mere pennies? So now my daughter, when watching youtube or prime, has to have the big chunky TV remote with her to adjust the volume because different youtube videos, or adverts, have varying volumes. I know it's '1st world problems' but it's just such an oversight. The other thing it doesn't seem to do, and it could be the TV, is switch off the TV when you tell Alexa to, which does happen on the 4k stick.
Also, despite the WiFi signal check saying the signal is very good, the prime preview videos look really compressed, and a youtube video did apparently break up, but I don't know if it was this Fire stick or not.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good picture quality

I found the Fire stick fairly easy to install, except for the Alexa voice control remote. This still has not worked and I feel I don't have enough time to go into it all again. The remote worked at first except for the voice control. Having had to unplug it from the mains at one point, I then found I had to re-install it from the start with passwords etc. At that point, I gave up on the remote through lack of time but will get back to it later having looked at all the instructions online. Excellent picture though and I can use it with the TV's own remote for the time being.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than previous Fire TV stick (1st Gen)
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 January 2022

Using a wired Ethernet connection streaming is smooth, better quality (than previous Fire TV stick (1st Gen) using WiFi only) too, great colours, good sound, overall an enjoyable experience to watch and listen. The voice recognition has improved immensely (I have a soft spoken "gentle" accent and voice - previously causing problems with voice rec. devices) with great ease of accessing to what we wanted via a voice search. Sadly, the couple of times we wanted to watch Amazon Prime original material (Documentary / Entertainment selections from the offered items), in spite of it being listed on the pages, it was "unavailable" for us when requested. Disappointing. We tend to know the kind of material we wish to watch, and this seems to be less available than those who just spontaneously opt for something at random?

Overall: great device with good sound and great colours - less satisfying Amazon Prime original material (unless it's pretty much "new" I guess?) - so overall recommend the device, am more ambivalent with the Amazon Prime material to view, though.

4.0 out of 5 stars A step up in quality
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 July 2021

I moved to a house without Fibre or a TV signal back in 2016 so I bought a Fire Stick and a Prime subscription to use on my 2Meg copper wire 'broadband' connection. Surprisingly it turned out to be an OK solution. Not the highest quality and a fair bit of buffering but plenty watchable.
Fast forward to 2021 and I'm on 4G which hits 20Meg download and I got Netflix to round things out. The old Fire TV Stick had started to really struggle with a noticeable difference in quality compared to watching on PC or tablet. Coupled with an annoying Ethernet Cable disconnected error introduced by a firmware update (it's never had a cable attached), regular loss of WiFi connectivity leading to numerous reboots and a very annoying random loss of sound in Netflix unless I changed the program to stereo sound in the settings - which of course aren't saved to the next episode. The kids started watching everything with subs.

So I updated to FireTV Stick Lite which is so much better. The stream quality is noticeably higher, it hasn't come up with any silly errors, the sound doesn't drop out and everything is much snappier and quicker to load and play. It also works better with the HDMI control options waking up from the TV remote without having to resort to pressing buttons on the Fire remote.

The whole Alexa voice control thing has seen very limited use I have to be careful with my Yorkshire accent but it seems to recognise what the kids say most of the time. They did spend a couple of days asking for jokes and such but mostly they just forget and do the same as always. The main problem is remembering to press the mic button and waiting for the animation when talking to her. Though I've had enough weird conversations with AI on my phone when accidently switched to always on voice recognition to not want that.

Any road up a worthwhile upgrade if you are on an old stick especially if having any of the problems I described above.

I didn't realize I still had a 1st generation FireTv Stick wich was starting to playing up before dying. This new version is way better and faster. The remote works and is easier to use. Works good with Alexa apart from an application called ViKi. When I pause it works, but when I want to resume the video Alexa doesn't recognise the command for that application but I guess it doesn't have much to do with the functionality of this FireTv.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great value for money - has an irritating limitation though.

This is great value for money. I got it in the sale for fifteen quid and for fifteen quid it is just brilliant, providing you're a prime subscriber. I wanted it for a very particular situation though and if you want it for anything similar you might want to consider one of the fuller-featured Firesticks.

I wanted it to feed streaming video to my projector, while attached to a HDMI breakout device feeding Dolby Digital audio to an old-but-good AV amp via optical. Hooked it up, set it to send DD audio, turned on Netflix and, behold! It was feeding stereo, not 5.1. Much hoking about and many rude words later, I resorted to a help forum where I learned that many Netflix films have a DD+ soundtrack, which some Firesticks can transcribe on-the-go to DD but that this one can't. Swapped it out for a Firestick 4K from my kitchen and it worked perfectly as I wanted.

If you need something to feed DD to an amp, then this is not the one for you.

Reaper
4.0 out of 5 stars Wide range, easy to operate, but stream quality not as good as through a bluray player
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 February 2021
Configuration: Device onlyVerified Purchase
I was skeptical about Firestick, but decided to go for it as my excellent Sony streaming blu ray player had added no more apps after two years of ownership and BBC iplayer and Youtube apps would sometimes go missing for months on end.

So when my BBC iplayer app disappeared, I decided to go for Firestick. The product description doesn't make clear that the entry level Firestick does not require you to have Alexa - the last thing I want is to have to talk to a AI -instead, the remote has a voice control (you don't have to address it as Alexa, which would have felt really silly- or maybe I've seen what HAL9000 does in '2001' too many times....) which is pretty good, saves a lot of keying on the remote when searching.

Setup was nice and easy, no problems. I can now stream Prime, Netflix and free content from Youtube, Ted Talks, My5, C4 (including Walter), ITV hub (not that I'll ever use it), BBC iplayer, Amazon Music (not free, part of prime, but it's REALLY ANNOYING as once you've opened it, you can't shut the d*** thing off-it's the same on my PC) and there is lots of other free content, which is pretty good. There are lots of other apps you can get, but of course some of them you have to pay sub fees, which is fair enough for stuff like Disney Plus.

I have to say, though, that the stream quality is nowhere near as good as through my sony BD player (miraculously, the missing BBC iplayer app reappeared once I'd set up the firestick). Many streams have a slightly hard digital edge which is better in some contexts (Youtube channels look more 'live') while films and TV aren't as smooth as through my BD player. However, it may well be that the firestick is streaming in 4K UHD, which my TV is not set up for- it's a 13 year old plasma with superb deep blacks and still looks amazing when I play 4K restored blurays through it- it even lookss great with many old DVDs, since my player upscales them. Looking at 'Jurassic Park' on Prime in the UHD, it has some very hard digital edges to my eyes, less so if I stream this through the BD player while streaming the HD version through the BD looks best. The actual bluray disc is best of all, so I suspect it's the fact my TV is not 4K.

Overall, I'd say this has been a very successful purchase for £30, but I'll still stream Netflix, Prime and Iplayer through my Sony BD as the picture quality is far superior. When I have to upgrade to a 4k smart TV, I'll be interested to see how Fire performs, but for the meantime, my old plasma looks the business with the BD player and good discs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good product…except for remote
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 May 2022

I wanted a device to consolidate the streaming services I subscribe to in one place, and this fire stick does the job. It’s fairly easy to use & navigate with the only exception to this being the remote. My remote has been temperamental since day one. I often had to remove the batteries and put them back in to get the TV to recognise the command from the remote. The other day it finally gave up completely. And I would not recommend using this website to get any help for resetting the remote! The instructions were too complicated (and ultimately failed to work despite repeated attempts) too much: “press these buttons simultaneously”/“turn your fire stick on and off”/wait 60 seconds/press a different set of buttons/ wait again etc etc. I gave up and decided to just download an app on my phone to operate the fire stick as prices for a replacement remote are also extortionate practically the same as buying another fire stick itself! My sister has a different model fire stick & has no issues with her remote but her fire stick often freezes & she has to switch it off at the wall and switch it on again. Think they are just cheaply made.

4.0 out of 5 stars You get Alexa, want it or not, and it's given our old TV a new lease of life. Brilliant!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 November 2021

I'll start with my one complaint - Alexa. However, you do have to press a button to use it so it's not as bad as I thought.
Our TV, a Samsung, no longer receives updates for BBC iPlayer or any other worthwhile app, so we were going to buy a new TV - the one we liked, £300+. I mentioned it to my son who asked what was wrong with our old one since it has been brilliant, so we told him. He suggested the Fire stick. What could we lose?
It's brilliant! Prime TV, iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4 and My5, plus a host of other apps if you want them, including You Tube.
Even better, when we looked, it was on offer! £16.95, but even at full price it's a bargain. Thinking about another for our Panasonic as iPlayer is now very slow to use and there aren't any other apps worth using on it.
