5.0 out of 5 starsNew Fire TV Lite is a fantastic budget streaming device! Upgrade!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 September 2020
I own the previous non-4k model, and this is a much better experience. First off, It's faster than previous fire sticks. No more menu lag. Things are smoother and faster overall. The user interface is snappier and more responsive all around, unlike the older Fire Stick, which does occasionally lag. It's crisp and clear, and intuitive to operate - and set-up is a piece of cake.

If you are wondering whether an elderly or technophobic person can handle the setup process, the answer is yes. The onscreen prompts guide you through everything, and should be easy for anyone to follow, even if don't consider yourself tech savvy. And in terms of the physical hardware, there are only like 2 steps: 1) Connect the Stick to a power source 2) Plug the Stick into any open HDMI port, which you'll find on the back or side of your TV.

Also, If you're wondering if the Fire TV Stick (with TV controls) suits you more. I would say it’s a question of personal preference. The Fire TV Stick Lite version does not support Dolby Atmos audio and the included Alexa Voice Remote Lite does not have power or volume buttons. Personally, the Lite version is fine for me as I have another remote which controls my TV’s volume and power button and I do not have a soundbar. However, I would recommend anyone with different devices connected to their TV such as soundbars to buy the Fire TV Stick (with TV controls) version as this would allow you to control everything all at once, however it is slightly higher in price compared to this one.

Finally If you're wondering whether the Lite version is a gimmick or whether it's worth it, the answer is: it's worth it, because it's as if they ironed out all the little kinks and pain points to get the user to their chosen content as quickly as possible. All the little improvements in terms of the speed/function, and the upgraded Alexa remote with the new “guide” button which takes you straight to your videos makes the Lite version a pleasure to use.
Amazon needs to keep up the good work. This Lite stick is a solid product and an excellent upgrade (for those on a budget) from the previous model. Hope this helps!

3.0 out of 5 starsLike any other Firestick, but with one irritating feature....so far
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 October 2020
All functionality is quick and responsive as you would expect so can't be faulted in that respect.

However, if, like me, you might side load some additional Apps onto your Firestick, which are not linked to your Amazon Account, you might see that the image / icon for the App does not appear in your Apps list and instead you get a "greyed out" box. The App will install and work fine once you open it, but the obvious visual for it is missing on your home screen and My Apps lists and if you have a few of them, you will have to guess which app you are opening. Example pictured.

This Fire TV Lite OS is Version 7.2.2.3, presumably bang up to date, and this does not happen (in my experience) with previous OS on the 4k Stick for example which is version 6.2.7.3.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and Factory resets but it is still the same. Might this be a "glitch" with the latest OS, Version 7, that needs fixing?

3.0 out of 5 stars Good streaming stick, but 3 stars because Amazon force increasing amounts of advertising onto you
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 December 2020
Configuration: Device onlyVerified Purchase
As a streaming stick works fine: easy to set up and use, good performance, good range of apps.

However...

Be warned that Amazon treat this as a compulsory advertising vehicle, with its user interface prioritising what they want to push onto you as opposed to what you want to receive. Their latest update (20/12/2020) makes this even worse by allocating even more space and priority to this with, so far as I can see, no mechanism for removing banner ads and "sponsored content" (ie rubbish no sane person would ever want) short of hacking the operating system.

Given that this is something which you pay for I find such behaviour unacceptable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rule 1 - Switch off at the wall, then back on again
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 January 2021
Configuration: Device onlyVerified Purchase
It is well worth remembering Rule 1 ... Because that's the one you will use the most .
There are not as many FREE to watch films / programmes as you would imagine. The concept of the Fire stick is amazing .. and if you speak without a regional accent in perfect queens English the voice remote will work great.
My first fire stick lasted around 5 or 6 months then stopped working, the online support is very good (I suppose it is so often used that it has to be) They soon discovered mine was faulty so offered me a FOC exchange which lasted a further 8 month (just beyond its warranty strange that isn't it) ... So I bought a new one so we were able to complete the watching of a series we had gotten in to ... So its new , it no longer controls the volume etc but its ok.
But enjoy it while it lasts because once you switch it off , the very next ,in fact practically every time you switch it on it will tell you it has lost Network connection and you will need to revert to Rule 1 ... Switch it off at the wall then back on again... The Firestick has been around long enough now to have ironed out its teething problems , but that would mean that you would not need to BUY a replacement from Amazon ... its a win win Product for Amazon and hours of frustration for the user . Would I ever buy another one ... yes of course I will in 13 months time just after my warranty expires .

3.0 out of 5 stars Handy HD streamer, but limited functionality.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 November 2020
Configuration: Device onlyVerified Purchase
Handy HDMI streaming device for use with an HD TV, but could not get it working with my VGA monitor, also found it had poor echo cinema sound quality via WiFi.

Using with an old PC monitor I found it wouldn’t remember the 720p VGA video resolution & defaulted back to 1080p when I switched off the monitor. The auto video resolution feature didn’t seem to work properly with VGA. I used to have no problem with my old 1st Gen Fire TV Stick. In the end I had to swap out my old Dell monitor for a Samsung 24” HD TV which works fine.

Also the WiFi bandwidth on this model seems to be limited compared to the 4K version, the picture is fine with 1080p movies but the cinema sound via WiFi was very low bit rate and terrible quality (even right next to the WiFi router on 5GHz) So I would recommend either the 4K Fire TV Stick, or use the Amazon Fire TV Ethernet Adapter if you wish to setup cinema sound with an echo device.

3.0 out of 5 stars Meh.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 December 2020

Runs smoother and quicker than older models but not happy with the fact it does not go into standby very well. What I mean by that is, when I turn the TV off for the night and come back to it the next day, the fire stick often won't come back on. I get either a blue screen with "no signal", a plan black screen as if it is sleeping but won't come back on or once I got a screen full of "static". I have to unplug the power cable for a min and start again which can be a pain with it stuck behind the TV.
Also, while the remote looks almost identical, the rear door for the battery is a different design which feels very flimsy, doesn't fit so well and has some sharp edges.
If I had paid more for it, I might return it but after picking up at a reduced price it doesn't seem worth it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Clunky and glitchy
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 October 2020
Configuration: Device onlyVerified Purchase
Bought this to temporarily replace my Apple TV box. Whilst a big price difference differentiates the two products, I have been disappointed by the clunky controls when compared to Apple, the lack of apps (Apple has Now TV in addition to the ones I have on Amazon).
There have been several glitches when the Fire Stick hasn’t responded and allowed me to go to the Home Screen, stating a network issue, this has resulted in a hard rest of the device (unplugging it), this despite the Echo Dot sat next to the TV still being connected to the internet along with my other devices too.
I have also been disappointed by the adverts on the Home Screen, not helped with the clunky controls I have selected adverts when I have wanted apps and content.

So for £29, this isn’t bad, just manage your expectations if you have used other superior products like Apple and Apple TV. Plus save £10 and dont buy the £39 version as most TV controls can work the device and the on off / volume buttons too (Sony Bravia here). And if they can’t, is it too much of a hassle to have two remotes?

3.0 out of 5 stars A little bit disappointing...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 February 2022
Configuration: Device onlyVerified Purchase
The first thing to say is that the Prime Video service is great. There's loads of content to choose from and some really great quality shows. My issue is with the Fire TV Stick itself. The actual device seems well made and the installation and set up was very simple and straightforward. As soon as I started watching a programme, however, the problem became apparent - the audio and vision are out of sync, in other words the person's mouth moves, but the sound comes out a second or so later, or maybe earlier. This was so noticeable that I immediately thought there must be a solution. I went into the settings menu to find that the synchronisation can be adjusted. This is done on-screen by trying to match a bouncing ball with a click tone. It's very hit-and-miss, so you have to keep going back to the programme or movie to see if you got it synced correctly. I've had the device for a few weeks now and I still can't seem to get it totally synced. The content works fine on my tablet and laptop, it's just on the TV that it doesn't seem to work properly.

What I can't understand is that it's 2022 - surely this is something that can be ironed out automatically within the software, without having to try and rectify it manually. It reminds me of video recorders in the 1990s and having to adjust the tracking to get a good picture. The strange thing is that it doesn't seem to affect other apps, such as All4, that you can use as part of the Fire TV service. Come on Mr Bezos - if you can send Captain Kirk into space, surely you can fix the audio sync on a Fire TV Stick!

The interface is also a bit clunky and feels like something from twenty years ago. You kind of get used to it after a while, but there's lots of going backwards and forwards through menus which feels very early 2000s.

Other than these two gripes, it's okay. If it came free with an Amazon Prime subscription it would be great, but paying £29.99 for something like this and then having to fine tune it yourself is a bit last century, in my opinion!

OK, so we bought this to watch the autumn rugby internationals not otherwise available - but there were several pauses in the transmission, maybe due to buffering, not sure - the picture would freeze, a blue circle appeared - when motion returned, it was poor definition, blurred. Overall, coverage needs much to be desired compared to BT and SKY, and not easy to discover coverage. We probably need to explore more, but not that satisfied.

Alex's works fine and the picture is fine, but the remote feels loose in my hand, it doesn't feel solid at all.
The device itself is ok but I've had a constant problem of it not turning on and it doesn't seem to always respond to the remote, so I find myself having to take the wire out, wait abit, then put it back in for it to work, at first it wasn't so bad but now I have to do it every time I want to watch it...which is annoying. Would return it but I bought it through someone & can not be bothered with the hassle ... I only really got it to watch Disney plus & the discovery plus app thing but it doesn't seem to have the discovery one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Does the job, slim app selection, rife with ads.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 August 2022
Configuration: Device onlyVerified Purchase
I bought this as I recently moved and needed a way to make an old TV capable of smart TV features. I've used NOW TV for years now and had hoped to just get their stick, but as it turns out, they've gotten out of the streaming hardware game and now just run software.

The Fire Stick works fine enough. App selection is a little disappointing (no STV for example), but overall it works fine for the most part. I've had a couple of occasions when apps don't launch and require a power cycle to solve the problem.

My biggest gripe though, lies solely with the ads that get shown on YouTube when played through the Fire Stick. They. Are. CONSTANT. I can watch a video on my NOW TV box on my living room TV where an ad will get played at the start (which is fine), then head to bed and continue watching the exact same video and get another ad when I select the video to continue, then get another set of ads (most unskippable) roughly every 5 minutes in comparison to NOW's one set at the start of a video and one set at the end.

Trying to watch YouTube on the Fire Stick is unbearable. Ad after ad after ad, almost always unable to skip them and more often than not they're the longer 15-30 second ads.

If you want to watch YouTube, find another way to do it. But for all the regular channel based streaming services like 4OD and My5 that run their own ads, the experience is perfectly fine.
