How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsGripping and well written

I really enjoyed this book, and am surprised by the mixed reviews, but then again I'm a fan of this author's writing. Even guessing a twist early on didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story. I love a 'snowed in' atmosphere and an isolated environment leads to lots of creepiness, and the sense of not quite knowing what's going on. The characters were well-developed and the revelations kept me turning the pages, wanting to know the resolution. Unlike several stories I've read lately, the ending didn't disappoint. I also enjoyed the chapters from the police characters' POV which added a touch of humour. Overall, a fantastic read.

2.0 out of 5 starsRepetitive and ridiculous
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 December 2019
Having read a couple of the Paula Maguire novels by this author I thought this might be of a similar standard. Sadly not.

It's a tale of domestic woe concerning Suzi, a thoroughly dislikeable woman, married to an equally dislikeable man, Nick. He's a passive-aggressive control freak who spies on his wife via high tech devices in the home and on her phone. She's pregnant by the second man she's had an affair with but hoping to pass it off as Nick's. Then we have the Widow Nora, a new neighbour who has moved into the delapidated cottage across the way. Is she a friend or foe to Suzi? Damian, one of Suzi's former work colleagues - just as sleazy and horrible as everyone else in this book - enters stage right in brief but nasty appearnces.

There's only one reasonably pleasant character in the form of sympathetic and obliging Dr Andrew Holt, who makes a couple of completely unbelievable appearances, and bringing up the rear we have a revolting alcoholic sleaze who works at the same hospital as an anaesthatist - as if.

The setting, a completely isolated rural nightmare of a place in Kent is quite atmospheric, but the characters are abominable, the writing often extremely clunky, the plot predictable and so repetitive it made by eyes bleed.
This is a ridiculous suspend-your-belief-totally book that I cannot recommend to anyone. The police thrillers concerning Paula Maguire are so much better, so read those and give this one a wide berth.

Having read a few negative reviews about this book, I only decided to read it because I have enjoyed the other Claire McGowan (Paula McGuire series and What you did) books so much. I am so glad I did, I found it easy to get into and very hard to put down. I found the characters interesting and the plot very intriguing. Like all of Claire's books I felt it was brought to a clever and interesting ending.

Excellent book. Read over only a couple of nights. The Suzi character is a bit of a twit and not all that convincing but a good, twisty thriller nonetheless.

Another fantastic book from Claire. Descriptions of the places like those cottages and scenery around them like you were there, I wish that one day I have a quiet cottage to live in like one of those two, where the two characters from the book lived in, ofcourse living there in good circumstances) without dragging any bad past there. I like how Claire is writing and so in the end all the pieces are falling in one like a snowflakes ❄ from this wintery mysterious story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful thriller with excellent female gaze

I love this. A lot of female thriller writers follow the style of male thriller writers, I assume because it's so popular. And I love a lot of them, but I have to say that this author only adds depth with her use of the female gaze. Not black and white good vs evil either. Flawed characters that I really related to.

I honestly know this will be one of my favourite books always
The characters were amazing
The dislike of nasty Nick right from the beginning had me willing Suzi on ,
I loved Ella for her cunning and logic and her ability to execute her plans I especially liked how she dealt with her would be blackmailed
I was thrilled for doctor Holt very unusual for an NHS doctor
Well done Claire McGowan
Thanks for entertaining me so well

A clever and intriguing storyline. It seems that the plot is obvious, but no. This is a great page turner that is full of surprises. I really burned the midnight oil with this one...could 'nt wait to find out how it all came together and was not disappointed. Recommended.

If you are looking for a book to grab your attention and deliver a twisting, tangled web of story telling then look no further. I read this book in two days despite a whole lot of studying I had planned to do and I certainly wasnt disappointed. Its wrapped in intrigue with a beautiful blend of characters that pull you in, willing you to walk beside them as you turn the pages and venture further into the web with an eagerness only the best books can instil. Full marks for satisfaction and a worthy conclusion.

This is the first book I've read by Claire McGowan but certainly won't be the last. The writing was brilliant and the plot riveting. It had you in suspense the whole way through and the characters were so well depicted. I liked the short chapters which jumped from character to character. Lots of twists and turns kept you guessing to the end. High!y recommended.
