5.0 out of 5 starsA high quality device with endless potential, offering low cost Alexa convenience
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 November 2019
The echo flex is a fantastic addition to the Echo line of products. It gives you a cheap way to make Amazon's Alexa service available all over your home whilst also adding the flexibility to attach modules to customise its usefulness to your personal requirements (e.g. you could add a nighlight) - the possibilities for this device are endless and you could make this device your main echo if you wanted or just have it as an extra echo in the hallway.

It was an absolute breeze to setup, it literally took me 1 minute and I didnt even have to refer to the quick start guide. All I did was plug it into a plug socket and after a few seconds a light on the device turned orange and the device spoke to confirm it was ready to be setup via the Alexa app. I went to the Alexa app and clicked add device, selecting the Echo option, then Echo flex, i had to enter my wifi password and once done a few seconds later the light on the echo flex turned blue to confirm it was ready to use. I did a test command 'Alexa, what is the capital of Brazil' and it effortlessly picked up my voice and responded appropriately. Just so you know this device works on both 2.4ghz and 5ghz wifi networks unlike most 3rd party smart devices which will only work on 2.4ghz.

The reason why I bought this device is because I always want access to alexa when im walking through my hallway and I remember something, like I need to turn off an electric heater, a fan in a bedroom or a light etc, this normally happens on my way out whilst walking through the hallway and I'm like damn I have alexa in the bedroom and in the lounge, I dont want to go back there just to tell Alexa to turn something off, I also dont want to pay loads of money to have an echo or echo dot in the hallway, especially as that would mean having unsightly trailing wires from my plug sockets, I can also imagine that not everyone has a place in their hallway that they can rest their devices on top of too. So the Echo flex fills this particular case perfectly, as I have spare sockets in my hallway, being able to just plug this in adds so much more convenience to life being able to talk to Alexa on the way out.

As far as I am concerned this is a device purely for increased convenience at low cost, as you can flood your home with Alexa devices without burning a major hole in your wallet.

Performance
Alexa is very responsive and seems to pick up the Alexa call very quickly and accurately despite any background noise, the audio from the device is loud, crisp and clear.

Privacy
There is a button on the flex so you can turn off the microphone that listens to you and it will indicate the off state by glowing red. There is another button on it for pairing but I have not needed to use that.

Quality
The build quality of the plug is reassuringly solid, I expect this will last for quite some time and if it doesnt I know I will be treated well by Amazon's customer service team.

Sound
The sound quality is perfect for everything except playing modern music, the audio is loud and clear, but this is a small plug in device with a teeny weeny speaker inside with no capability for bass, so the sound is lacking significantly in fullness - it can sound like a laptop speaker although I would actually say it's probably not THAT bad. I listen to traditional Chinese music, and will regularly have it playing in the background as ambient noise as I find it very relaxing and peaceful, the echo flex can handle this type of music perfectly without sounding cheap, I have it constantly playing in my hallway now :-) If you are the type of person that wants the echo flex to also be able to play any kind of music with decent audio quality well it seems Amazon also has a solution for you too as the echo flex has a 3.5mm audio Jack on the side, so you could actually plug this into your own sound system if you were to use it in your lounge or bedroom which would improve the sound quality significantly. Unfortunately a cable is not provided to enable this so you'll have to get one yourself. Amazon go a step further allowing you to play sound from the flex to a bluetooth speaker, although I am yet to test it I can imagine this would be straight forward to setup, there is also an option in the app to connect to a 'Stereo pair / subwoofer' - so I guess this device has been made to please everyone!

Modularity
The Echo flex has a usb port on the bottom which means you can plug in addons to give it even more usefulness - some of the existing addons are motion sensors and nightlight both of which can prove useful, but I can imagine at some point they may introduce even more useful addons such as security camera modules, door bell modules, baby monitor modules, temperature sensors, clocks and possibly even a speaker module to provide fuller sound direct from the devices, the possibilities are limitless. This is a brilliant idea from Amazon and I hope third party manufacturers exploit this opportunity to the fullest extent!

If you are not really bothered about addons you may be interested to know that you can use the usb port to charge your devices, I connected my Samsung S9 Plus and it charged to full after about 2 hours without any issues - please note that the usb port does not support fast charging though.

Overall, the device defitniely fills a gap that is not quite hit by the other echo devices, and for me it has proved to be a very useful addition to my family of smart devices. I can imagine Amazon's main smart home competitor will copy this idea pretty soon as it is a really good idea and concept which has been implemented in an almost faultless way.

At £24.99 I feel that this device is definitely value for money and money well spent, I cant wait for amazon prime day or black friday as they will be even cheaper so I'm going to fill every nook and cranny of my home with these :-)

Warning to the guys out there: I am talking to Alexa a lot these days and have found my wife is becoming very jealous lol - this is the only real downside I have come across so far! :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars I dont quite get the comments

Comments about the sound quality strike me as slightly odd.... if you want great sound there are other Alexa devices - ironically if you want an echo with no sound get an echo input and Bluetooth to a spare speaker or radio or by wire with a line in socket.... the flex is a device all about where its positioned in the range of Alexa devices with the advantage of no trailing power wire or need for an adapter. Seems fair enough to me and Im quite happy - Ill use mine in the kitchen just plugged in for all sorts of uses - if I want to stream music Ive got a spare Bluetooth speaker. See the Flex in context and where it fits and it makes complete sense. (Since original review Amazon have amended their flex description to make the sound quality issue clear...fair play to them and nobody should complain now)

The smart side of this device is excellent, but as for the use of a music device, it is very poor.
I recorded both devices at full volume, 4K and 60FPS.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for Home Automation - Not a Cheap Alternative to the Echo Dot
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 November 2019
Style Name: Echo FlexVerified Purchase
The Echo Flex is a great little device to add Alexa to places in your house where you don’t need music, but you would like to call out to Alexa to do your bidding for you. Hallways, entrances etc are where this device shines – with the 2 additional modules (sold seperately B07VF43BG1 B07VDPY2RL), the Night light (which auto senses the light conditions and turns on automatically) and the Motion Sensor the Echo Flex fits well into the Alexa home automation environment.

Whether you want Alex to Greet you when you step through your front door, or turn the lights on in your house, the Echo Flex with motion Sensor (sold separately) can make almost any of the voice commands you normally use trigger from motion instead of your voice.

It is super easy to setup – truly plug and play.

Don't buy this as a cheap alternative to the Echo Dot! The sound on the Dot is infinitely better (and louder) - this Echo Flex is really a way to make your home smarter and put Alexa in corridors and rooms you wouldn't want to listen to music.

Absolutely delighted with this. Does exactly what it says. I have a few health issues and this has given me so much more confidence, I have in it my long hallway and if I have a fall In hall or bathroom i can get it to call for help if I need it.
Brilliant wee addition to making my home smarter. Would highly recommend it to anyone , just to make home smarter or for anyone who has mobility/ health issues who might need the occasional help . I’m definitely impressed with it.

This looks like a high-end Wi-Fi extender or high-power cell-phone charger. Very good product finish. Despite the very small speaker, sound quality is surprising good. Definitely suitable to hold a conversation via Alexa messaging or Alexa Connect. Ideal for use in kitchen over a worktop where zero clutter is important. Amazon have filled a product gap elegantly. USB charging output a bonus. Price is very interesting.
You are unlikely to regret this purchase.

I received this as a very late birthday presents from a friend as it didn't come out until after my birthday but I am very pleased with it although the sound quality isn't as good as the other Alexa devices that was to be expected as it's in such a small form factor and it works great with the motion detector attachment which is what I have attached to it

The packaging is gorgeous just like the other Alexa devices!

Pros:
Cheaper than other Alexa devices
Takes up less space
Multiple choice for attachments
Small and none intrusive design

The motion sensor is decent for the price I like the fact that you can set it to ignore you for a set amount of time once you triggered an event for example if you wall by and it turns the kitchen light on you can set it so it won't turn the light on again for X amount of time which is handy as my other sensors you can't do this and they trigger the event every time you walk past even if you've literally just walked by

Cons:
Sound quality could be better

Takes up a plug socket with no pass through rendering the socket 'useless' unless you're willing to unplug alexa every time you want to hoover or something

The motion sensor attachment could be slightly better you can't set a timer for how long the lights turn on for when you walk by which to me defeats the purpose because unless you have an Alexa in every room you'll still have to use your phone to turn the lights off
But I believe this could be improved by a software update

3.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money, disappointed
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 August 2020
Style Name: Echo FlexVerified Purchase
We have a heavily Alexa/Ring controlled household and when the Flex came out it sounded like the perfect option to plug gaps in our voice recognition around the house in hallways or rooms we don't use as much.
However, it is what it is, a cheap Echo. The microphone pickup on it is pretty awful when compared with other echo devices we have around the house. It often fails to detect that you're talking to it unless you slow your speech and speak as if both you and Alexa are mentally challenged.

While this does do the job of plugging gaps in the house, it would've been better to just buy more of the echo dots and buy socket mounts for them instead as they may look bulkier but they're far superior.

If the flex was a tenner, maybe it'd be worth the money but honestly I've found the four I have more hassle than they're worth.

These also suffer far more frequently from intermittent connection issues, regularly flashing red and complaining they can't connect to the Internet. A quick flip of the wall switch to turn them off and back on again reconnects them but it's just another irritation which lowers the worth of the flex when compared with the rest of the echo range.

Additionally the extra components like the plug in night light are a nice extra feature but they're a total rip off.
I begrudgingly grabbed a night light adapter as we only have one socket on our landing but it brought the overall price of the unit over that of a much better echo dot.
You can buy a pack of four motion activated plug in night lights for around £8 on amazon, making these extras a really hard sell. Yes they allow you to have an echo and a light in one socket but given how poor the flex is, it's hardly worth having it there at all so a basic night light and shouting to the nearest room with a dot would've been a cheaper and just as effective alternative.

As someone who absolutely loves the echo range, I'd never buy another flex and will be looking to get rid of the four I have in the very near future.

If you're on a budget and you don't plan to control your whole house with a Flex then maybe it's a good buy for you but if you rely on voice recognition for home automation, get a dot and a socket mount instead.
