5.0 out of 5 starsAnother belter from a top class series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 February 2019
Now - and I say this with the best of intentions - if you have not read any of the books in the series before, then this is not the place to start. It would be absolutely impossible to read the book without reading spoilers for all that has come before. If you don't mind that and just want to get a flavour of what the series is all about then read away, but know that when you go back, you'll know whodunnit and for the joy of the journey of discovery you have yet to go on that would be a damned shame. If you are already a fan, read on and marvel as this book will make you glow with a knowing smile, as you drift back to memories of cases past ...

In this book, someone is going to great pains, and deriving great pleasure it seems, from creating little tableaus of events from Kim's life. That would be nice if it was all Hallmark card moments, and this was a collection of fun and fluffy pictures and happy memories. As fans of Kim know, her life hasn't been full of shiny, happy people and these are not beautifully crafted découpage pictures. These tableaus feature bodies. Lots and lots of bodies ... But just who could be trying to unsettle Kim so badly and why?
Well ... this is book ten. She has amassed a lot of enemies - and that's just in the cases we know about. This investigation will see Kim and the Team come face to face with a lot of familiar names, any one of which could have reason to want to see Kim Stone fall ...

And by god, does that lead us through a fantastically fraught, often emotional and thoroughly tense thrill ride of a read that will see fans clapping their hands in glee, and more than a few folk staggering into work bleary eyed as this is most definitely a sleep stealer that will have you reading late into the night. At least this book is released on a Friday so a good number of people will have a nice long weekend to savour it (sorry to those who have to work Saturdays and Sundays ...)

I love the characters in this series and they are all on top form once again. Angela Marsons has a fantastic way of making you care about the people you are reading about, of creating a true emotional pull, even when dealing with the more 'disposable' characters. And when it comes to the 'villains' they go way beyond caricatures of bad guys. There is real depth to their portrayal too, be it in terms of intelligence, pure hatred or sly cunning. They feel authentic - very real - so much so that some will make your skin crawl while others will have you lamenting, and yet still understanding why, the simple fact of their incarceration.

And as for the ending - tense, breath-catching stuff. All action, all marvel, all typical Angela Marsons' styling, as she takes the reader to the edge of their seat and holds them there in a very uncomfortable position. Not for too long, the action is too fast paced for that, but long enough to make your legs ache and your pulse race. It's not the first time I've felt my heart in my throat and doubtless it won't be the last. From the gripping opening to the highly dramatic closing scenes, the story will have readers completely drawn in. You can feel every moment of pressure mounting on Kim and the team to solve the murders, and the personal guilt and anxiety that Kim feels in having her traumatic past revisited as she is left completely exposed. Loved it.

3.0 out of 5 starsHard to follow - one for diehard fans probably
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 March 2019
I usually like the Kim Stone books and find them fast paced, without too many predictable twists and turns and am able to suspend my disbelief long enough to be really engrossed, but I found this one disappointing and tricky to follow. I haven’t read the Kim Stone books one after the other, and intersperse reading with many other authors and genres - therefore I found it a bit hard to follow and remember exactly who the characters were from previous books. Usually authors take a bit of license with this and while some can annoyingly “over-refresh” your memory, I found that in this book I didn’t have nearly enough back story to remind me who everyone was and I couldn’t always remember the exact crimes they had committed or been involved in. It meant at the end I was a bit “meh” and didn’t really find it a satisfying end. Plus the team annoyed me when they were so clearly on the wrong track that even they sort of knew they were!
Spoiler alert - The character it was pinned on originally was so obviously not it - I had no idea why we should believe that he was after everything we had been told and didn’t know why Kim and the team did. It was all a bit far fetched in the end - perhaps more so because I had forgotten a bit about who the real killer was. Either way I didn’t love this one, and found myself constantly skipping back and searching for names in old books to try to work out who was who. Not ideal or enjoyable.
Despite that if you are reading on the beach or before bed for a bit of mindless escapism it’s ok. But better if you know all the previous books really well / have read recently to keep track of who’s who ETC.

I've read most of the Kim Stone books but found this one utterly, boringly baffling with the number of characters involved - and most from back stories so a reader would be lost if they hadn't read any previous books. By the time I reached the end of the book I had no idea, and didn't care, who the perpetrator of the crimes was (as in although revealed the name just didn't ring a bell). Even more characters to suspect than in an Agatha Christie novel . It's annoying to have to keep referring back in a story to see who's now being suspected and what relationship they had to the previous suspect who's now been murdered. There's also the added complication of having to re-read sentences to make sense as there appears to be one person missing from the compilation of this book - A PROOFREADER.

Quite honestly I just did not get this book. It was like seeing a repeat on the television with a new angle.
Those of us who have been a follower of Angela Marsons - DI Kim Stone books knew of her sad and horrific childhood and equally know that she has managed to bury her childhood deep within her subconscious and has come out a strong and determined police officer. The book depicted copy cat events of her past and whilst they were recognised as such, Kim was still prepared to solve the gratuitous murders.
What I was disappointed in is that the book was a re-run of events, noted several times in the book and the perpetrator who wanted revenge obviously did not know the mental strength of DI Stone.
I hope the next book has a new story, perhaps Kim could find her soul mate!!!! (Not the best review but then again neither was the book)

When you have a great series, I start to wonder at what point will it run out of steam. But not with this one 10 books in, and it is still running at 200 mph.
Unfortunately I don't have a tenth of her writing skills, so I am running out of superlatives to praise this series.
Still has the brilliant banter between Stone and Bryant. Not quite so many references to local areas that I recognise this time.
This one has a darker theme than usual, based on DI Stone early life as per the blurb on the back. Most of which we have read before but there are more revelations. It makes you wonder how she has survived all she has, but it also offers some explanation of why her characters is as strong as it is.
Can't wait for book 11! Will have to read the dictionary to learn a few new words for the next review.

Kim Stone is a complex character in previous books, but in this one she is totally one-dimensional. There is no real story here; just some re-hashing of past novels and some appalling grammatical and punctuation errors. Does this author not have a proof reader? One person cannot mill around. Only a group of people can. Anyway there is just not enough going on, and what is going on is pretty grim and far-fetched, to hold my interest.

Firstly let me add that I enjoyed the book somewhat, but the volume of characters and their actions swamped me. So when the 'big reveal' happened I didn't have a clue who it was or why. So the ending spoilt an otherwise enjoyable read....but what's the point of the story if you don't know who did what or why!

Anyone who has read the Kim Stone series from the start knows her horrific back story. With each successive book we've had references to her blood family and her foster parents. In moderation, this well-used technique is fine to remind loyal fans of what went before, give perspective to cases she's dealing with and to fill in the gaps for new readers who perhaps dropped in halfway through the series.
A couple of books ago I wrote in a review that the office dynamics were getting stale and a shake-up might be necessary to give fresh avenues to explore if the series was to run to sixteen books, as predicted. There has been a change of personnel in the office, but this story was crammed with characters we have encountered in previous books. Alison, the profiler was dealing with a new case as well as observing Kim Stone but everything else centred on which of the previously featured villains was re-creating terrifying events from Kim's past.
OK, these books are always well-written, fast-paced and easy to read, but surely the last drop must have been squeezed from this bunch of villains? I hope book #11 introduces us to fresh cases and brand-new characters - from both sides of the law.

I have read all the Kim Stone books, normally in my in one or2 days. I love the character and just want to read more and more about her.
I was not sure as I was reading this that it developed her character as much as other books did, but sitting here thinking about it, it did, just in a slightly diferent direction. A great story, but if I was starting it again I would have a quick read through the other books to get a feel for who some of the protagonists are And how
Kim was involved with them.

As usual, after reading a “Kim” book I don’t feel inclined to read about anyone else. This is particularly so as I have just finished a ‘Ryan’ book, who is my other favourite.

Keep up the good work Angela.

So many tangents I got bored and ditched it after 30%. Sick of reading about Kim’s past. No gripping storylines. Won’t be buying any more in this series. Far inferior to roughley’s lasser series.
