How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 starsMany negative reviews - surely not that bad?

There does seem to be quite a few negative reviews for Segate drives in general here.

I have no connection with Segate nor any other vested interest, but I would say I've had literally dozens of their drives over the years and only ever had one failure.

Also worth pointing out that almost every other make and model have similar comments, if not quite as many. I guess people are more likely to post negative comments when they have suffered a failure of some kind?

More recently, I've been using these 2.5" USB 5TB drives for video library use. They don't get hammered, but do cope perfectly well for this fairly demanding use.

No storage device is ever 100% reliable nor lasts forever. So, whilst I do sympathise with those folk who have lost valuable data, I would always advocate BACKUP, BACKUP and BACKUP!

Generally, have AT LEAST one copy of everything, preferably kept in another physical location. That way, when the inevitable eventually happens, you won't get that deep sick feeling that all your important data is lost forever.

I will keep buying these 2.5" USB3 drives as they are compact, fast (for my use) and cheap enough to have another one elsewhere as backup.

3.0 out of 5 starsSMR drive. Poor delivery by Amazon
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 December 2019
Good drive. Available capacity 4.48TB. Warranty on this drive is 2 years. I was worried it might be bulky but turned out very compact.
Only concern is the delivery. And hence 3 stars. I couldn't find feedback link for delivery. The delivery guy simply dropped it in from the door. HDDs are prone to mechanical failure upon exposure to drops/shocks and amazon doesn't seem to care a bit about it.
I advice collection from nearest store.

Update: Just came to know that the 5tb version actually has a SMR drive inside. For those who don't know, smr drives are specifically meant for archival and don't have good random write performance. After the disk is about 25% full, there is noticeable degradation in performance. Choose wisely.

4.0 out of 5 stars a sweet very large & affordable Hard drive

01.06.2022 initial review
well 1st "portability" as a question found on the review!! its hmmm, you must have a power supply ie its not powered via USB so its not a 100% portable "without"
you do get a host of adaptors within the package so where-ever you maybe you shouldn't be stuck without the correct plug choice...
you also get the necessary USB cable to connect to your device, again its fool proof "hmm, lets not kid ourselves you'll see some muppets complaining due to having the cable reverse & doesn't fit correctly etc.. YES the USB cable only fits one way around, a lil message to the muppets out there"

storage volume, well its not a true 4TB as a small amount of space has been taken due to the running software etc.. to this day I'm surprised there's not a small memory chip within the circuit board to store such data leaving the full volume to the user.

anyway, the device.. its very very quiet when running, you do get a single 'white' LED proving power-on status etc & some small 2pre-fitted rubber feet. again it seems this unit is designed to be stood on its side rather then flat on the larger surface etc "I'm not sure if this would effect its running "I'm not really going to want to find that out"

file transfer, well upto now.. drone images & 4k, 1080p video transfers pretty damned quickly so I cant really see why anyone would need to moan.. regarding using this as a gaming HD device.. honestly I'd compare specs to similar devices OR contacting the manufacturer for definitive information.. relying upon amazon questions/answers "your asking for trouble"

yes the HD does come nicely packaged with info within & yes it arrived a week early (delivered 2days)

as all my reviews I'll update further after more use

Have used Seagate drives a lot for backing up, bought 2 of these in the Amazon sale for £70 a piece, however trying to copy 2TB of Flacs to a 5TB drive is impossible , there are constant error messages, tried reformatting from NTFS down to exFAT which is what the 4TB drive i am copying from is formatted in. Tried using a different computer, more error messages from windows wanting to repair the drive. It seems like a duff batch.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unusable drives from Seagate once again - (5TB purchased).
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 December 2020
Capacity: 5 TBStyle Name: Portable HDDVerified Purchase
Well, I guess I should know by now that Seagate are racing towards the bottom of the price range as fast as they can, but occasionally they make something that will work for its warranty period at least..

They appear to have succeeded in selecting a USB SATA bridge for these drives that is incapable of operating stably on a USB 3.0 bus, and instead rely on your operating system to retry any I/Os that fail. This may well be good enough for people who don't need the capacity, but when you're selling a 5TB drive you can bet people want to put a lot of data on it, and probably pretty quickly. No such luck with this one.

The user's best bet - don't buy one of this generation of ultra-low priced drives.

1.0 out of 5 stars Purchased this drive. Failed within 3 months.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 September 2020
Capacity: 5 TBStyle Name: Portable HDDVerified Purchase
I was using this Amazon Special Edition 5TB drive mainly for backups and storing of older files. I purchased it at the end of June, along with Seagate's Data Recovery addon. Just last weekend, the drive started clicking and partitions became inaccessible. Unplugging and plugging it back in did nothing. It's not like the drive had heavy use, since files were just being stored on it and read back from time to time.

Amazon offered to repair (how?) or refund. I chose a refund and they said I could have the drive picked up by Hermes. Hermes have not turned up 3 times to collect the drive, and each time they marked it as "we couldn't collect it", despite nobody ever knocking on my door. Totally useless hard drive and courier company.

Don't buy this drive if you value your data. My WD Passport 1TB drive is 6 years old and still shows Good on SMART. Take from that what you will.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked fine for 3 months, then broke - but fab support from Seagate restored it
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 August 2020
Capacity: 5 TBStyle Name: Portable HDDVerified Purchase
Bought this as a time machine back up for my MacBook Air in Mar 20; worked fine until this month, when it stopped doing backups. In trying to fix it, I tried all usual disk utility stuff: the laptop could see the disk, but couldn’t or failed any attempt to ‘first aid’, restore, erase, mount, or re-format. Including an attempt on a Windows laptop.
Was ready to give up, when I did a web chat with Seagate support.
The agent was good, but concluded that the disk was broken. However, given it was still under warranty, suggested I return it for a replacement. Given that there was significant data on it, I did not consider returning the disk an option.
I then spotted an email address on the Seagate support page to be used to ‘escalate an issue’. So I wrote them an email. Imagine my shock and awe when I got a phone call 24 hrs later offering to sort my problem. Reader, the competent, knowledgeable, very pleasant James solved my problem. It involved re-initialising/formatting the disk and erasing all the data, but given I had an alternative backup, I was fine with that.
My disk is now happily backing up my Mac as a time machine back up again.
Happy days. Hopefully. Moral of the story - sometimes going to the Support desk works! Other morals . . . keep alternative backups; keep a spare windows laptop; buy from trusted companies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Large storage, small price
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 September 2020
Capacity: 5 TBStyle Name: Portable HDDVerified Purchase
Ordered these to remove the drives from them for use in a Synology 620slim. The Synology is a 2.5" NAS drive so the usual 3.5" NAS specific drives are a non-starter. These seagate external drives contain 2.5" drives that are compatible with the sinology NAS .

They work brilliantly and with 3 of these I have 10TB of storage with redundancy.

I already use one of these drives in a small PC build and several as external storage for backups. They have always been reliable and run very quietly and without any serious vibrations which is important for keeping the noise down as the NAS sits right next to me all day.

As portable drives they're great as you can carry 5TB of storage in such a small package.

Big thumbs up as well to Amazon for sorting out the delivery issue I had with this order :)

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 January 2022
Capacity: 6 TBStyle Name: DesktopVerified Purchase
This external hard-drive is awful. I bought it as I have always found Seagate portable hard-drives the most reliable. However, this device is not reliable and I cannot trust it with my data. First of all you only get 5 and a half TB to utilize as half a TB is taken up by the unwanted stuff that is already on there when you receive it. Then when plugged in to a laptop is causes all kind of odd things to happen to your system. After downloading onto the device for a while all the files on my laptop turned white as did those loaded on to the device. In order to get them back to normal I had to restart my laptop all the time. I have three laptops and one is brand new with nothing really on it yet but it behaved the same way whatever laptop I used. In terms of the downloading itself it is mostly very slow when loading files and only picks up any speed on transferring one item at a time which is laborious to say the least. Then it is pot luck if you want to drag one item from a file to another file because sometimes it works and other times it causes havoc and starts a downloading process running at such a slow pace that if you continued you may wait half an hour for one item. I had to keep cancelling these downloads and instead of dragging a file I had to cut and paste which seemed to work better. In fact the only thing this device does well at is cancelling downloads. It also crashes your system at times and again you have to restart the laptop to be able to open a file. It has been a horrific experience all around. I had hoped to connect it to a projector but the unreliability of this device excludes that option for me. I would NEVER recommend this device which is very expensive for what it is in terms of money, time, usability and efficiency. Very, very disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars PS 5 compatible
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 February 2022

So rapidly ran out of space on PS5. This will happily store and run PS4 titles but PS5 need to live on the PS 5. As the PS suggests you can always transfer and store PS5 games on to this drive; it just saves you having to download it again every time you want it.

No noticeable glitches or stuttering - even PSVR seems happy.
