5.0 out of 5 starsGreat price to performance ratio SSD for mid-end systems
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 October 2020
I bought this SSD to upgrade the drive I use for games (from an old Samsung EVO 840 500GB). This SSD offers a great price to performance ratio, giving you a more premium product at a price point that would only get you a value product from most brands.

Points to note:
- MX series has a DRAM cache
- TLC 3D NAND, not QLC
- High endurance rating (360 TBW for 1TB drive)
- Flash chips are Micron (parent company of Crucial) - good quality
- 5 year warranty

The best thing about this SSD is the high endurance rating at this price point, and TLC 3D-NAND. The most comparable Samsung SSD (QVO 1TB) uses QLC flash which is slower under heavy sustained workloads and has poorer endurance over time.

I benchmarked this drive and achieved 561.61MB/sec read, 519.24MB/sec write which slightly exceeds the manufacturer specification.

Installation was easy, not any different from any other 2.5" SSD. A plastic spacer is provided in the event that you are installing this SSD into a laptop that needs a thicker mechanical drive to fill the drive bay and align the connector. In that case you stick the plastic frame down onto the SSD to take up the extra space. You probably wont need to use it for most installations.

Crucial do sell a cheaper variant of this drive - the BX line - it is very similar but lacks the DRAM cache and has been known to use a cheaper grade of flash memory. The MX line is the more premium product.

Given the 5 year warranty and high transfer speeds I can easily recommend this drive. It would be suitable as an OS boot drive, or a secondary drive to hold games and applications.

3.0 out of 5 stars Failed after 8 months. *UPDATE*
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 June 2021

I am updating my review. I am doing this due to the helpfulness of Crucial support. I am however still removing two stars. One for the length of time it took to get a replacement. And the other for the drive failing so quickly.

My original review is below. I do recommend the drives again but only with the proviso that I may edit this review again in the future if one of the drives fails again. I hope not. I do recommend these drives but except to wait quite a considerable amount of time and effort waiting for a replacement drive. They are very cheap drives when on sale and are very good for the money. I just question the quality of said drives since the failure. Do buy them if you want an affordable drive. If you want guaranteed quality no matter the cost then I recommend Samsung drives over Crucial.
-------------------------------------
Bought two in October of 2020.
They worked great for about 8 months.
Just today (9th June 2021) one of the drives died. Completely stone cold dead.
I tried power cycling the drive to see if it would come back to life.
Alas it never did. I had to RMA a drive that is 8 months old. 8 MONTHS and it's dead already!
My boot SSD & Hard Drive have been in my computer for over 4 years and have yet to show any signs of slowing down. This drive that I buy suddenly decides it wants to stop working.

1.0 out of 5 stars Only lasted about 15 months
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 April 2021

I kept my Hard Drive with the Windows operating system in place still when 'upgrading' to this SSD which was fortunate because after about 15 months I had a 'blue screen of death'. At first I did not appreciated it was the SSD because the PC eventually started. I noticed it reverted back to broadly the time I installed the SSD but just thought the system restore had not worked. I was not using the PC much at that time as I had a new laptop (care of work, now that many of us are working from home). Then it seemed to be very slow at starting up, and then I started looking at all the partitions I had and managed to work out that the boot drive had switched back to the old hard drive.

I restarted the PC and entered the Bios and pointed the boot drive back to the SSD and re-started. The PC tried to repair the SSD to no avail. So the blue screen of death was the SSD going after about 15 months of use. Not great considering the old mechanical drive is still going well after about 7 years, albeit a bit slow.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dead on 11 month. Rubbish.

PC now running 10x faster on boot up.

Software to clone HD to this SSD not quite straight forward (so lost a star there). Software didn't recognize the drive when installed on one of the SATA ports for HDD. I had to switch it to a USB SATA port to get it to be seen. Bizarre. Cloned HDD easily there after. I then reconfigured motherboard and installed this SSD as my primary drive. Worked OK there after. Lots of messing about and head scratching up to there but results well worth it for boot-up speed.

Update: Almost on its 1 year anniversary the thing died on me. Won't by Crucial again. From 4* to 1*. I'd give it zero if I could.

3.0 out of 5 stars Had a lot of trouble installing this one.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 August 2021

I bought this to upgrade the hard drive on an old Dell laptop. I have upgraded a few laptops to SSD but never before have I experienced the hassle I had with this drive. Strangely the last 500gb Crucial SSD I installed was no problem at all but this one just wouldn't play ball.
I was using cloning software to copy from the original drive but it refused to recognise this drive. I did initialise it first. I then used a different cloning program which completed the clone but the drive would not boot and no boot sector was found.
I eventually got it working by putting it in a desktop pc and using dos to build the boot sector.
The other problem I encountered was that this drive would not connect properly when installed in the slide in caddy with the plastic cover fixed with the 2 screws. Just using the screws on the caddy without fastening the drawer cover to it and just placing the cover on afterwards worked.
I don't know if this hassle would have been avoided by using another brand but I think I will stick to WD drives in future.

3.0 out of 5 stars Recommended cloning software failed
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 January 2022
Style Name: Standard PackagingCapacity: 1 TBVerified Purchase
I tried using the recommended Crucial version of Acronis True Image software to clone my main drive. After selecting the source drive it then hung for around 15 minutes or more before allowing me to select the destination drive (the Crucial drive plugged into a USB 3.0 port). It then estimated more than a day to clone my 1Tb drive! So I left it running overnight. It completed with a message to say that it was successful and that I could swap drives (though this was in less time than it predicted).

However, when I swapped drives and rebooted my laptop it failed. I removed and had a look at the cloned drive. The software had only copied one partition and even that was screwed. I downloaded some Acronis managements software from the Crucial site to see if I could troubleshoot the issue. However, even that seemed flakey - sometimes when you started it the disk details window wouldn't appear.

So I gave up with that and downloaded a free version of Macrium Reflect. This software seems much more responsive. It's also much more informative - it shows you all the partitions on the disks and while cloning shows what it's doing. So I cloned my disk with this - which was successful!

So thanks to Macrium (and no thanks to Acronis), I now have a fully working SSD installed. I even managed to use the Acronis management software to verify that it's fully error free!

I wasted a week trying to get the drive to work in any of three different computers. The drive was only visible in one (my high-spec. gaming computer already with SSDs), but it would not accept as new hardware, and I definitely could not connect with the drive. It was supposed to be for a new drive for my laptop, but was not visible on either of the two laptops that I tried. What a waste of time. I now have to go and find a different make, and it won't be another Crucial, which is a shame because a two year old Crucial SSD works fine in my gaming machine; the quality is obviously not as good now.

3.0 out of 5 stars These MX500's sold by Amazon have a Faulty Firmware Error!

Nothing wrong with the SSD Per se, but as you can see on the photo it comes up with a "FAULTY FIRMWARE ERROR". This means that as far as using the Crucial Storage Executive facility it's unusable. If you try to use any of the facilities on the left like the SMART or Momentum Cache the SSD is not seen and actually disappears altogether within the CSE. And you cannot change the Firmware at all.
This is because they are shipped with the incorrect Firmware.
(A quote from the Crucial Website).
"A number of MX500 drives were shipped with Firmware Revision M3CR043 or M3CR044. These revisions are not applicable to drives which shipped with previous firmware revisions".
They do not explain why....???
But the Drives do work as drives, you just cannot use any of the facilities in the Crucial Storage Executive Software.
Makes one wonder if this is why they are so cheap... (On Amazon)????

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to install. Good value for money piece of kit.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 October 2021

I won't start by trying to compare this drive with the Samsung EVO or WD drives. There's plenty of reviews already here about that topic, by people far more qualified than me. I would say though, that I, as an 'intermediate' computer user - not a boffin, but have no problem opening a laptop and changing a HDD - I doubt I would notice any real difference in performance between this, the EVO, and the WD.

(Cue howls from those in the know.....)

Anyway, I digress... I have bought two of these drives, one put into a 2015 16GB i7 HP Envy Laptop, and one in a 2010 6GB Dual Core desktop.

The desktop used to take up to 10 minutes to be usable after booting and Windows doing all its business. You could genuinely go off and make a cup of tea (and drink it). After installing this drive, it probably took all of 30 seconds from 'turn on' to usable. It was like a new machine. Photoshop also started up in a matter of seconds rather than close to 2 minutes previously.

The laptop is a much newer machine but it too would take 5+ minutes to be usable. This was in part due to the amount of guff I had on the computer, but now, literally 7 seconds from switch on to go!! Photoshop starts in a matter of seconds. Again, like a new machine.

The Acronis cloning software that you download via link was straightforward and easy to use. It's not the full version but does what you need it to do. Obviously, to clone, you will need some way of connecting the drive to your computer via a SATA to USB doohicky. Lots of them on Amazon.

Crucial Storage Executive, their version of Samsung's 'Magician' optimization software is a bit clunky, not as sexy as Samsungs, but infinitely usable. You don't have to use it though. It's not essential.

Just a word if you are looking at a SSD to improve gaming performance. Unless you have a game that utilises a lot of loading from the drive, you probably won't experience much improvement in gaming. That is still dependant on memory, GPU, and processor first and foremost.

So, in summary, as an intermediate computer user who wouldn't really notice the difference in performance between the big 3, I went for the cheapest (at the time) option, and I have to say, I have not been disappointed. I do thoroughly recommend it.
