4.0 out of 5 starsWhere do Thrawn's loyalties lie?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 August 2018
A very good book and continuation of Thrawn's legend/legacy. If I am a little disappointed it is because as good as this book was, it is simply with Timothy Zahn writing Thrawn and Vader I did not want good I was expecting great. However Very good is very good.

This book book is set in two time periods. Going back to the line in the first book where a meeting between, then General Anakin Skywalker and Thrawn, during the Clone Wars was mentioned. The majority of this book takes place in that era, as well as the current problem. One thing I like very much in this book is Zahn's writing the differences between Anakin and Vader, and how Vader refers to the memories of Anakin as "the Jedi's". Zahn also did a great job of showing the precognition powers the Force sensitive use. As the story progresses I saw the reason for this.

The second era that this book is set in is right after Season 3 of Star Wars Rebels, right after Thrawn's biggest defeat to date. So his standing and loyalty is in question. There is a lot of verbal sparing and jockeying for the number 2 position in the Empire between Thrawn and Vader. Usually with Thrawn coming out on top. However there is a great deal of respect between the two the telling point of that is Thrawn was still alive as Vader is not known for his patience.

There are elements taken from other Star Wars pre-Disney era books. One of the ideas come from the Golden Age of the Sith comic series where a couple of Force sensitives found another way to earn a living out of their talents, and a material that has not been used in the Disney era as of yet, as well some more of the behind the scenes of Order 66.

A very good book, that is slightly slow in places. I think this was the only stumbling block for me as with Vader in the book I was expecting a lot more action in the book. Though the lack of fights did show Vader's other skills that are sometimes forgotten because of his fearsome reputation and displays of power.

I lost interest in Star Wars back during the cgi Clone Wars show, throwing away all the novels I had. But when Grand Admiral Thrawn was reintroduced I gained some interest. Timothy Zahn's previous book was a disappointment. It was boring. Unfortunately that trend has continued and even gotten worse. This book feels like the same short story told twice. I absolutely hate reading the two time periods together. Thrawn is the kind of character who should be involved in galactic scale stories. Truth is I have never really liked previous short stories involving Thrawn. The other main issue is the introduction of the Grysks. It's been speculated these are analogues of the Yuuzhan Vong. Whereas that enemy was introduced rather well from the very beginning of their series, the Grysk feel like some generic bad guy. Disappointing. At least the original Thrawn trilogy has now been released. Go read that for the real Grand Admiral Thrawn, not this pale boring imitation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better

This is a considerable improvement over the previous Thrawn novel, but only because it features characters we know better than most, what with the story taking place both during the Clone Wars, as Thrawn teams up with Anakin Skywalker, and between seasons 3 & 4 of the Rebels series, with Thrawn teamed up with Vader. The plot is a touch contrived as a result, with Thrawn feeling more like a side character really, and Padme's sections are almost unbearably dull and plodding. We also never get to discover what makes Thrawn tick, like the author doesn't fully understand his own creation, likely because Thrawn is basically Sherlock in the Star Wars universe. So the book is reasonably entertaining in spite of Thrawn, because he is not a character I find interesting or compelling in any way.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but a bit disappointing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 November 2018

Like many Star Wars novels, this wasn't bad but it also kind of disappointed. I quite enjoyed the first Thrawn book so was looking forward to him teaming up with Darth Vader. The story is divided over two timelines, back in the Clone Wars time when we have Anakin and Padme teaming up with Thrawn for the first time, and then the 'current' timeline, set during the Rebels TV series time with Thrawn and Vader. They are both set on the same set of planets near the edge of Unknown space, of which we've had a lot of hints in the novels.

Honestly both storylines weren't the best. They had good bits but promised more than they delivered. The Thrawn-Vader storyline basically consisted on Thrawn asking Vader to trust him and Vader questioning his loyalty to the Empire. And Vader did trust him a lot which seemed out of character. There is some mitigation because of the events of the earlier timeline but not enough. WE did finally get some of the real motivations of Thrawn which was good, I had been wondering. The earlier timeline was ok but seemed rather pointless, similar stories have already been done. I think one of my main issues is that all these novels sound great and might finally reveal some actual major information but in the end they don't. More hints about the outer rim but again nothing really relevant to the major storylines from the films. Disney probably have an embargo on what can be discussed but sometimes it feels kind of pointless reading these because of that.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Read (via Audible) - not as good as book 1

I was recommended this series to listen to on Audible, read by Marc Thompson. It was my first dip into any fiction in the Star Wars universe. The narrator is excellent and an essential part of my enjoyment of the story of Thrawn, a member of the Chiss Ascendancy who rises up through the ranks of the Empire under Emperor Palpatine. Having read Book 1 - Thrawn, I leaped into this one headfirst. I didn't enjoy it as much - I found the skipping back to the historical assignment between Thrawn and General Anakin Skywalker a bit clunky. This one was more of a slow burn for me before it would pick up again in Book 3.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent writing but a lacklustre plot

I’m a huge fan of Thrawn and although I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the first instalment (Thrawn), I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I really like how Zahn sets this story during both the Clone Wars and Galactic Civil War eras. It’s really interesting to see how Thrawn interacts with both Anakin and then Vader many years later.

Zahn does an excellent job with all the main characters. The dialogue is spot on in my opinion.

The plot is a little weak unfortunately and I would have liked to see the two timelines link up with each other a bit better. The enemy Grysks were also very uninteresting and didn’t appear to be nearly as intimidating as I feel they were intended to be. Hopefully the next instalment fleshes these guys out a lot more.

All in all a great read and I highly recommend if you’re a fan of the blue dude.

4.0 out of 5 stars When Opposites Attract

I'm a big fan of both characters and really enjoyed this book - Vader as a character is driven by anger & hatred for obvious reasons whereas Thrawn is not like a lot of the Empires hierarchy, he isn't evil more a logical, calculated restrained individual who won't just destroy for the sake of it but look at all avenues before deciding on a method to use. So in this book you get two very different characters working alongside each other then we find out jumping between time periods Thrawn has in the past come across Anakin Skywalker during the Clone Wars. So we keep jumping between both time periods with Thrawn working alongside Padme and Anakin in one and Vader in the other which is interesting. To Vader Anakin is dead but Thrawn is a pretty clever guy and throughout the book you get the impression he knows who Vader actually is and I think he gets pretty close to the mark with Vader during this story pushing and pushing until he knew when to stop. By the end I think there was a mutual respect between the two but that's my opinion and how I like to think of it. I like the story but I still feel it lacked something thats why I didn't give it a 5 star grade. It is worth a read for all Star Wars fans and these are two of the greatest characters in the Star Wars Universe for me - if you haven't read Thrawn yet then I would read this first then read that like I did because I like the end of chapter two in Thrawn after reading Alliances - again this is just my opinion. Thrawn is great and there is so much more to his character than just power and ambition, he is a different sort of Imperial Admiral I hope at some stage they do a spin off movie based on him!

Having been introduced to Thrawn in the old EU, post Return of the Jedi setting, this newer version is taking a lot of getting used too. But, the first book wasn't too bad, this one though...

The 'present day' storyline and the Thrawn/Vader interactions were rather fun, but the whole Clone Wars era Padme/Anakin stuff did drag somewhat. However, while the book in general didn't do a lot for me, I'll be back for the next one.

I just hope it doesn't go anywhere near the "Rebels" setting, as sadly it is referenced in this book and diminish's our favourite red-eyed boy as a result.

This should have been two separate novels or two longish shirt stories in one novel but both threads were padded by lots of useless running around and Thrawn being threatened again and again the not at all scary Vadar
Would score higher but flash back and future threads went and the way to the end and the enemy didn't turn out as scary or formidable as implied. A big disappointment but some revelations about characters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thrawn & Vader
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 June 2020

It was overall a good read. I enjoyed the interactions Thrawn had with Vader from the past and to the present. It was cool seeing them working together, Thrawn the brains and Vader the muscle. I'm not saying that Vader is dumb, it's just that Thrawn's a genius. To be honest the time jumps did eventually start to annoy me, when something exciting was going down. But it also served a purpose for the narrative, looking back on it after finishing the book. I'll say that the first book Thrawn, was much better. This book was good, but the first one was excellent. I'm looking forward to reading the third book now.
