How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsCheaper way to renew but watch out for McAfee's sharp practices
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 May 2019
I already had McAfee Total Protection and the annual subscription was up for renewal. Having been stung by McAfee's expensive automatic renewal process in the past I had turned off the auto renew function so I could do it manually.

If I had renewed directly through McAfee, they wanted US$169 as their default was to upgrade to something I didn't need. I could have switched to a lower package for US$69 or bought the full Total Protection package download direct from McAfee for £69.

I opted instead to get the very same Total Protection 2019 download from Amazon for just under £21 which covers up to 10 devices (other options are available for 1, 3 or 5 devices). This is the exact same product that I was already using which simplifies the process. (It automatically updates to the latest version so I started 2 years ago with the 2017 version which has updated a few times). It's a digital download and Amazon sent an activation code by e-mail within 2 minutes.

I was half expecting to have to remove and re-download the software on all my devices as payback for being too tight to pay the auto renewal fee but thankfully that was not the case. I just followed the instructions to activate the code using my existing McAfee account and it immediately updated the subscription across all registered devices. Really quick and simple.

They tell you it can take a day or two for the new expiry date to appear on all devices but you can refresh it manually, which I did, and it all worked perfectly.

One thing to remember though is when you renew the subscription, it re-sets the renewal option to automatic for next time and McAfee process the auto renewal a month or two early just to catch you out. If you want to avoid that happening you need to go into settings to switch off the auto renewal function every time you renew. There's no way you can forget about it because you get reminders popping up every day from about 2 months before renewal date.

Yes McAfee have some questionable business practices but the product works and keeps my devices secure.

Why is Amazon selling this? following my experience and now looking at previous reviews this software may work for you, and it may not. I received the key code for the McAfee total protection fine. I activated the product at the McAfee website fine. It started to install fine....THEN STOPPED. Whatever I tried, including McAfee's own Stinger software to sort any problems with my computer (which there were none), it will not install over 34%. There is no refund or return available with this product. I have never had a problem installing antivirus software before. McAfee say they can sort the problem, but guess what..there is a min £60 charge! Eventually gave up and bought and downloaded an alternative brand's software and yes...it installed absolutely fine and is working great. Do yourself a favour and do not buy this.

Just purchased this for the second year running via Amazon, at a fraction of the cost direct from McAfee.
Word of caution, be a little mindful of the installation instructions provided by Amazon , it can lead to a few scam websites encouraging you to telephone McAfee, when the installation code fails to activate.

For me this process worked. Try it.
Don't follow the instructions provided by Amazon. Minefield!
Purchase the product.
Receive the e mail from Amazon containing the activation code to activate this product with McAfee.
Then using your browser, search for mcafee.com, SPELT like that, and in lower case letters. This brings you to the genuine website which should look like the first picture i've uploaded.
Click on Account in the top right hand corner.
Then click on redeem your retail card.
At this point you can enter the activation code into the box provided and follow the on screen instructions, to log into your existing McAfee account, or register one if you don't have one. See the second picture I uploaded.

I found this all worked smoothly from that point onwards.
The instructions provided by Amazon didnt!

Good luck.

started off fine, retrieved code no problem... the problem came with installing it. Error code came up, Contacted the online help, who whilst staying online rang me. Every thing seemed fine to start with, seemed so helpful. The very friendly Oliver took control of my computer while talking to me over the phone, Started showing me all these different pages ( so convincing)... according to Oliver and the pages he was showing , there was a major problem with mt firewall.( I should add I have had this very same software for the past two years bought direct from the supplier, it ran out two days before the purchase I made via Amazon, though they extended cover while I decided if I was going to renew.) According to Oliver a spybot had attached itself to my firewall and it would't allow the new download to complete. Yes the images he was pointing out showed exactly that.... Next second another window opened showing a price list containing a level of' fix it' prices.... this is where I said no I am not paying out anymore, the very friendly Oliver then suddenly became very aggresive and rude, shrilling down the mouthpiece that I had to have this to fix the problem. I put the phone down and started shutting down all the windows he had opened. He rang back twice, I didn't answer. The next night I went on to purchase the antivirus, at double the price direct through McAffe. It downloaded without any problems..... So beware who ever was the online help or seller is conning people. I don't believe it was anything to do with McAffe or Amazon directly but the third party/online help.

I was somewhat sceptical after reading some of the poorer rated reviews of buying this here, but bit the bullet and went ahead with the purchase of my years cover for five devices. I expected all kinds of issues, but as the price was literally a quarter of what McAfee wanted to charge me to renew with them, I still bought this, here on Amazon. My existing cover was due to expire on the same day that I made my purchase. To my amazement, the instructions were plain and straightforward and everything went without a hitch! The download, or whatever it's called, was so simple to do. Firstly onto my Windows 10 laptop, and then hassle-free to my Windows 7 PC. Seriously, if I can get to grips with the step-by-step instructions, anyone can! All I will say is, be sure you copy & paste the ENTIRE code that you will find in your Account with Amazon when you've made your purchase, as it is easy to see how some folk miss the second line which contains the last few digits of that full code. As others have mentioned be sure to switch the auto-renew setting to off once you are with McAfee. Hope this helps someone out there, who may be undecided about buying this from Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Code works fine, but beware of scam activation sites

I've been using McAfee for a few years now, and as in previous years, I didn't have any problems with this code. It's not long since I renewed my subscription, but I decided to extend it further, and it just tacked the extra 12 months on to the end of the current one, simple as.

Just don't forget that when you've got the new code in (if you're renewing) to go to Verify Subscription from the McAfee icon in the system tray.

I've seen a few reviews where people have been told the code is invalid, and have had to pay for activation, or phone up to be told that they need to pay hundreds to have trojans removed. This is the result of going to fake activation sites. Don't Google it when you want to activate, fake sites show up in the top results, make sure you input the address specified manually, and when you do type it in, check for typos before you go to the site, scammers prey on people who mistype addresses.

I have used McAfee Total Protection for a number of years and wanted to renew with them but didn't like their renewal price this year. So bought a download from Amazon for many pounds cheaper. McAfee made it pretty difficult to download the product from Amazon. Got there in the end but not easy. So I would say that if you haven't used this McAfee product before it would be a breeze to download this great programme. If you are already a subscriber to McAfee it's a different kettle of fish. They just want you to stay with them and pay loads of money. If you can be bothered to persevere with Amazon's very reasonably priced product you will get a bargain.

4.0 out of 5 stars Requires credit card and subscription setup before use and be careful of auto renewal
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 August 2020
Platform For Display: Activation code by EmailEdition: Total ProtectionSubscription Term Name: 5 DevicesVerified Purchase
As soon as you click the link to download, McAfee want your credit card details to automatically start the annual subscription service, which to be fair you can eventually opt out of straight away after many are you sure, really sure, talk to our advisors type of options. They justify it by saying it stops the product expiring and your devices not being protected, fair enough but it also has the effect that if you forget to check the renewal price and let it auto renew, it could be much higher than your first year price. Instead of getting a prompt to renew and then reminding you to shop around for a deal.

I left Norton this year as on their annual license listed on amazon it said they needed your card details and you would have to set up a subscription, so moved to mcafee as no mention of this in the description at the time, only to find out subscription required the same as Norton, so I felt a bit misled by that.

After unsubscribing from auto renewal, the antivirus/security downloads and functions in the background as you would expect. Very easy setup and easy to use, no problems with usability and performance . License for mobile devices includes handy lost device locator.

Perfectly functional, easy to use and a great product, just be ready with credit card and watch the auto renewal.

3.0 out of 5 stars Annoyed at forced credit card details
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 January 2018
Platform For Display: Activation code by EmailEdition: Total ProtectionSubscription Term Name: 5 DevicesVerified Purchase
For the last two years, this product has had hiccups installing although this year went a lot smoother. However I very annoyed at having to provide credit card details especially as I will absolutely not let this autorenew as loyal customers are rewarded by a far more expensive rate (£35 - 70) if they allow this to happen rather than just buying on here for £15. You are forced to enter card details otherwise you cannot use the software you have bought and there is a no refund policy from amazon - hence I am only giving this 3 stars. But - their system does not validate addresses nor the CVC code, the latter being vital for future payment so you can enter an incorrect code to avoid private details being held. Also you should go in immediately and switch off auto renew. Despite switching off which is a clear instruction to the software provider, they will not then allow you to delete details - so write to mc a fee to advise them to remove card information - if they do not, this must surely be a data protection breach.
