How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsA bitter sweet read.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 April 2021
Lucy to some, has it all. She may have met and married the love of her life, relatively late compared to some and is a high flyer in a career but the one thing she wants above all else, is to be a mother.

Jonah and Lucy have such a heartwarming relationship but when his daughter from a previous marriage comes to stay, Camille, it puts them through a testing time. Camille is a reminder of what it’s like to be a young sixteen year old. She could definitely be anyone of us at that age. I couldn’t help warming to Camille even though she was really testing Lucy’s patience.

The story deals with miscarriage which at times broke my heart with what Lucy was going through. I haven’t been through this situation myself but the author really makes it hit home with Lucy’s emotions and thoughts and it felt quite personal at times. I thought the author wrote it all beautifully.

The Idea Of You is a bitter sweet read. I went through a whole array of emotions and whilst some parts made for hard reading, it is a reminder of what a wonderful thing motherhood is and that it shouldn’t be taken for granted. A moving, compulsive read that was impossible to put down.

2.0 out of 5 starsSorry, found this tedious!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 July 2017
Characters were alternately annoying and nauseating. A 16 year old was repeatedly referred to as a "little girl" which grated on me and was rather ridiculous and I just couldn't bring myself to be that bothered about any of it tbh. The only bit I could relate to (as lots of women) was the early pregnancy related issues. Sorry, just not my cup of tea.

I should have remembered that I don't like Amanda Prowse books and this was no exception. Very boring and couldn't stand the main character, is Lucy 39 or 69, very prudish and its written like she is an old woman, this is the 21st century after all, utter rubbish

Although the book was readable, it became a tad tedious and I felt that the main character must have had shares in Kleenex as she cried constantly. I understand that it is difficult subject matter and probably life shattering, but I felt it was overblown.

5.0 out of 5 stars Again a must read from Amanda

I understood Lucy more as I read through this book, she wasn't as selfish as I first thought her to be. Jonah would be a wonderful husband to have, with so much love for his wife, a loyal man. Be honest with your family and friends don't keep secrets. I wasn't expecting the response from Bella in her letter, so it made me think, for her it was the right thing to do. Multiple miscarriages is too awful for words and I found myself thinking about my daughter who went through the same thing, eventually she had her babies. I wish the same had for !Lucy and Jonah.... But it wasn't to be...

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling, emotional read, perfectly executed.

This is the first of Amanda's books I have read, and perhaps subject-wise, for me personally, it is the most difficult to have started with: baby-loss. But she writes sensitively, beautifully, and captures the sentiment and torment that is miscarriage, and the way those around us respond, which in turn only helps the healing process for many a parent. It's also a hugely important novel in terms of breaking the stigma which still unnecessarily surrounds baby-loss in the year that is 2017. Her praise across her spanning collection of novels is much deserved, and I am excited to start the next Amanda Prowse book on my list...

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting, thought provoking read.

I like Amanda Prowse’s work and don’t read a synopsis of the story line. Once I started to read “The idea of you” I realised the subject might pull at the heart strings. An emotional read, it has to be said with the main character dealing with the trauma of being unable to carry a baby full term. As the novel continues, you realise that she possibly does have a secret from youth and this comes to the fore when her step daughter arrives on the scene. I don’t do spoilers but as it continues, it does evoke emotions and thoughts of “what if” in ones own life, etc. If you need a good cry, then choose this.

What a wonderful sensitive thought provoking book. The misconception over women having early miscarriages that they can get over it and move on and the way it affects their lives was brilliantly written, Lucy suffered greatly from the teen pregnancy and adoption but back in the day that was how things were done, to bottle up all that pain and hurt caused further damage and caused a block in the mother daughter relationship. Wonderful heart wrenching thought provoking book. Grab a couple of boxes of tissues and curl up ready for a good cry.

I gave this book a '10', because I was emotionally wrung out, before reading about the joy the author has as a grandmother. It is a long time since I have thought about fears of miscarriage.
The italicized words in every chapter were a bit too much for me. I will go back and read it again. Best wishes

I absolutely loved this book I cried and smiled all the way through. Grieving for all the babies that I'm never going to have but more for all the grandchildren I'm never going to have and feeling a grateful and happy to have the love of a wonderful man who loves me for me.
