How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsNo. More. Bites. Yippee!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 July 2018
Have bought many tins of this for our summer in Kielder. Even before the midge season got into full swing I was mauled. Next trip up three bites, but that was after the Smidge wore off (about 8 hours). Cue this week! Heat, humidity, rain and billions of midges. Not one bite! Full disclosure: I have been following other advice - taking vitamin B supplements, wearing light coloured clothing (nothing puts a midge off than the sight of a Hawiian shirt - just like humans, really,) and trying to avoid the times when they swarm. However, I was watching a thunderstorm under a canopy, along with midges that decided to join me, but I've come away unscathed.

After years of looking like I have chicken pox on my legs and arms I can definitely say that Smidge works.

1.0 out of 5 starsTHIS DOES NOT WORK
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 September 2018
I purchased Smidge for a trip to Scotland but it does not keep the midges away whatsoever. It claims on the website that "The active ingredient in Smidge has been molecularly designed to effectively block the antennal receptors of biting insects. Basically, it throws them off your scent." - this is not true, the midges swarm and you still get attacked from all angles. Would strongly recommend purchasing a mosquito net or something physical.

4.0 out of 5 stars Flea & Mozzie Season
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 August 2020

Has properly stopped me getting mauled by dog fleas after the dogs have been treated and keeps mosquitoes at bay in the wetland area I live near. Mild scent, light, non greasy and easily absorbed. Found this info - Picaridin - This chemical is a synthetic version of a repellent found in pepper plants. Maximum protection is provided in formulations with 20 percent picaridin. Spray versions protect for up to 12 hours against mosquitoes and ticks, and up to eight hours against flies; lotion formulations last for up to 14 hours against mosquitoes and ticks, and up to eight hours against flies.
Picaridin vs. DEET
Because they’re the most effective repellents, people often ask which is better. Here’s a quick comparison:
DEET: It’s considered the gold standard in terms of its effectiveness. It’s been used and studied more than any other repellent in human history, though it must be handled carefully because it can damage plastics (think sunglasses, trekking pole grips, etc.)
Picaridin: Though it’s been around for fewer decades, its efficacy is considered comparable to DEET for mosquitoes and ticks, and it works better on flies. Picaridin also has minimal odor and no damaging effect on plastics and other synthetics.

5.0 out of 5 stars This stuff is great and it really works on the West Coast of Scotland.

We have been using Smidge for years now, after discovering it in a shop on the way to our West Coast of Scotland holiday.
It smells ok - a lot better than some of the old 'DDT' type insect repellants that could have struck down a Red Deer at 5 paces that they used to sell.
It goes on like a facial moisturiser which, obviously being a man, I do not use!!!
I can't remember being bitten by a midge or a horsefly whilst using this stuff - although my daughter did bite me one year, when she was really small, and this stuff did not put her off!
Just a word of warning - only use it on the exposed parts of flesh when outside - I covered my whole body in it one day as an experiment and it even repelled my wife.... I think it was the Smidge?!?

The midgeys definitely still swarm but I didn't have any bites. SURVIVED A NIGHT IN GALLOWAY FORREST! IN SUMMER!!
And it feels like moisturiser so ye canny argue. Just remember to bring baby wipes too! We ate after we applied it, later on, and everything tasted like chemicals! Now I understand what the bugs go through! Almost literally got a taste of our own medicine 😂 also be careful not to rub your eyes etc. Pretty potent stuff but needs be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works brilliantly for me, midges and mosquitoes
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 September 2015

I went on a camper-van trip in Lapland in July 2015. Mosquitoes swarm around you over there as much as midges do in Scotland. And with the sun never going down in July, the swarms seems to last for most of the 'night', as well as the day. I'm someone who gets a lot of bites normally; about 20 in two days before I remembered I had brought a bottle of this with me. I tried it all over my exposed skin, including my hands. I then stood outside our camper van and watched the swarm form around me. A mosi came to land on my hand, and then backed off when it got to within about 5 cm of my skin. I tried proffering my hand again, it came in for another attempt and then backed off again! Kept trying it but no landing... Amazing stuff!

It seemed to last for about 5 hours on a hard-ish walk around the wilderness, then I decided to reapply as I went through a humid gorge. (Walked over some remaining snow in July with a swarm around me!)

Not smelly like DEET, doesn't damage the plastic on your watch like DEET.

This has been highly effective against mosquitoes for me and doesn't have a horrible caustic smell.

Recommend trying it!

I was bitten after applying this spray, so back to deet for my ankles etc, I shall try using this free from deet spray again as I hate putting poisons all over my body. I have always been bitten but with age and chemo I now only have to open my garden door and I get bitten, if it were not for the itching I would not believe it. If you get bitten or have an itch put a hot teaspoon on the bite, it stops the itching.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sorry, it didn't work at all

I used this against lake district midges and it didn't work at all, still got bitten all over, and I used it incredibly generously over every part of me! I even reapplied 4 times whilst the midges were biting me and it didn't repel them at all (maybe it drowned some of them because I sprayed that much!). In the picture, most of those black dots are midges and not my freckles.

So far so good , I like am dtrek in Scotland it’s midge heaven at the moment .
On my last walk I literally seen the midges fall of myself and walking partners if the midges and cleggs touched this . Also no one was bitten , despite several attacks by the blighters ..
So far impressed and would recommend and less toxic than deet.
