If you had asked me five days ago if this product worked, I would have told you I'm not sure. How can you gauge cat behavior? They are some of the most unpredictable creatures I've ever known.
Our issues stemmed from introducing a new feline into the family. Our other (older) cat was not pleased in the slightest. My husband joked that we hoped she wasn't going to pack her bags and move out. She was beyond angry.
While she retreated to the basement and hissed and growled each time the new cat walked by, we were finding puddles of urine on every surface in the house. I'm not talking about spraying. I mean stepping onto a soaked bath mat that was marked with something other than bath water. Some articles will tell you different ways to determine which cat is doing the deed. I didn't need that advice, because the new cat jumped on our bed one early morning and soaked through 3 blankets onto our mattress and my pajamas. He was peeing on brand new furniture, empty grocery and garbage bags left on the floor, and piles of dirty towels. Our home was his toilet.
I decided to invest in Comfort Zone Feliway in an act of desperation: skeptical, but willing to try anything to keep our home from becoming one giant litter box.
I received the product quickly on the date of expected delivery 4 days ago. Almost as soon as I plugged it in, both cats fell into a long slumber on adjacent pieces of furniture. There's a disclaimer on the product description that says Comfort Zone is not a sedative.
I believe this to be true. I think the release of pheromones just does its job immediately to relax the cats. About two days later, my husband and I were shocked to see the old cat walking past the new cat without hissing, and even playing with him! I felt we had reached a breakthrough. Not only that, but the new cat virtually stopped peeing outside the litter box. (There was one small incident, but nothing like before).
I should note that we switched litter types during this time, so that could contribute to the reason he stopped peeing in the house.
However, this morning, it was like the cats took 4 steps backwards. The old cat was looking for every opportunity to bully the new cat and was being VERY mean and aggressive. She even turned on my husband and our dog.
I sat pondering why there was such a sudden turn in behavior when they had been doing so well! That's when I noticed the Comfort Zone plug-in sitting UNPLUGGED on the coffee table. My husband must have removed it from the wall while he was doing construction in the hallway. Eureka!
I promptly plugged the insert back into the wall, and as I write this review, my cats are slumbering peacefully within 4 feet of each other and have been for the past 3 hours. Soon they will awaken and hopefully return to the peaceful kumbaya attitude they reached before. I am a believer in this product.
