How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 starsQuietly compelling.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 March 2018
I have been promising myself that I would finally get around to reading older books from some of my favourite authors, and Jojo Moyes was top of my list. I kept my fingers crossed that this one would live up to her later books...and for me, yes, it did! Quietly compelling, I enjoyed the array of characters and drama surrounding them and found Moyes' writing as beautiful as ever.

Recently widowed Isabel has been left in a difficult financial situation by her deceased husband and can no longer afford to keep the swish London home she now occupies with her two children. Fortunately, she has been left property by a distant uncle and moves away to 'The Spanish House' in rural Norfolk. Run down and sadly lacking in amenities, it is nothing like the finery her and the children have been accustomed too. Isabel is also unaware that somebody else wants the house...badly! So badly in fact, that he is willing to stop at nothing in his attempt to own the property.

Full of family secrets and well crafted characters, I was drawn into the well woven, nicely paced plot and hope her other older titles are as good.

Mmmm, loved so much of what she's done, but this misses its mark, by miles. It's a paper thin plot, woven around weak and barely believable characters that simply do not hold together. It reads like a pot-pourri of storylines loosely stapled together in the hope that "something will work out" and, sadly, none of it does. The ending is quite bizarre and wholly unsatisfying, given what has actually gone on in the book. The twists are laborious and the surprises simply aren't. Some passages are cleverly told, but on the whole, it is a tedious read and your time would honestly be better spent elsewhere.

2.0 out of 5 stars OK,but not up to her usual standard

I found a lot of of this book quite irritating and far fetched. I wanted to give Isabel a good talking to. Even allowing for her bereavement, financial predicament and artistic temperament. Byron I loved , Thierry was endearing,Laura was weak, in fact the strongest character in the book was Kitty. The plot like the house was full of holes but by far the most ludicrous thing in the story was the frequent mentions of the lack of a socket to plug the fridge in. Isabel was so lacking in gumption that she couldn't move the fridge to another room with a socket ??!! Food hanging in netting on exterior walls. Isabel playing her violin whilst the house falls down!!!! All a bit silly for me.

I have enjoyed other books ks by this author and looked forward to this one but it doesn't seem to be anywhere near her usual standard. The characters, especially Matt, Laura and Isobel, are scarcely credible and the plot ridiculous at worst, a stretch at best. I gave up after about a quarter of the book and skimmed to the end.

Enjoyed the first half of the book but didn’t like any of the characters didn’t warm to anyone, felt rushed towards the end as if a deadline was waiting could imagine the setting but then near the end was unrealistic I’m not a writer and have no idea what is expected of one wouldn’t recommend as found it to unrealistic will continue to read other books by the same author, as enjoyed other books

JoJo Moyes is down as one of my favourite authors, however, this book was very weak. The development of the romantic relationships was extremely lacking and hence unrealistic. Quite amateur writing I'm afraid. I don't think that will be keeping an eye out for future work.

2.0 out of 5 stars An earlier and less engaging book from a much-loved author

I bought this having greatly enjoyed Jojo Moyes's more recent books, not realising that this is an earlier work. I feel more forgiving of it now that I know this, but I gave up about a third of the way through, which is rare for me. I didn't feel invested in any of the characters and the writing isn't appealing. The main character is a professional violinist, and this didn't seem to have been effectively researched, so that all the terminology and conversation relating to her work was just wrong. I can see from other reviews that the book may gather speed later on, but I don't feel inspired to finish it.

2.0 out of 5 stars I am glad I didn’t pay full price for this book

I didn’t enjoy this book at all which is a shame because I usually like books by this author. I didn’t empathise with the main character at all and as a mother who was a young widow with young children I found her very selfish and totally unreliable. The other characters were over the top and motivated by criminal gain and were not realistic or likeable.
I lost interest halfway through the book and I only finished it because there was nothing else to do.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for me (or anyone at Bookclub)

Low scores from my Bookclub. No one particularly enjoyed it, I didn’t finish it. My mum substituted for me at that meeting and she only read it because she had Covid and couldn’t leave the house! But hey different people like different things so give it a read if it takes your fancy. Maybe try the charity shops though because my copy has already made it there and I imagine others have too!

A very cheesy romantic novel. The writing is of course great but the story lacks any depth; one for the poolside
