How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsThought my printer was broken
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 January 2022
I had a paper jam on two densely printer pages that i had set to print to edges beyond the safe zone. Regretted this silly decision when everything locked up solid. Clearing the jam wrecked an almost empty “clone” cartridge so i put in a new clone, it was a brand that I’ve used for about 4 years with no problem. The quality was so bad (fuzzy) i thought i had vision problems at first. After trying everything to clean, align, improve resolution on my HP Envy I thought that i had probably damaged the printer beyond repair but before i gave up I decided to buy the inordinately expensive genuine hp cartridge. Ho hum it worked perfectly and quality is back to what it was before my stupidity. Not yet decided what to do next time i need to renew the cartridge but it was an interesting lesson that I thought worth sharing.

Bought to print a few pages every now and again. Worked as expected when I got it, but the next time I went to use it, a number of months later, the cartridge didn't work, it had dried up and no amount of printer head cleaning or manual cleaning would fix it. Printer companies really do have us over the barrel. If you don't use genuine ink the printer messes around and usually needs some kind of "hack" to get working, but if you spend the full price on genuine ink, the cartridges dry up. We can't win.

3.0 out of 5 stars If you are still stuck without an HP Instant Ink printer, enjoy these genuine (and genuinely expensive) carts my friend

Ooh, a trip down memory lane to those times (eight years ago) when I had to buy expensive ink from HP. Times before HP introduced the Instant Ink thing, which now means I only pay a monthly fee (less each year than buying a single genuine HP black and colour cart) for however many pages I want to print and the ink comes direct to my door before I run out at no extra cost. I'm saving a fortune, and not worrying about using the photo-printing functionality to whack out A4 pics anymore. Back to these carts, they were original HP and so quality and longevity were as expected. As you can probably tell by my little rant, rip-off pricing was as expected also.

On fitting the new cartridge, the first in a new printer after the original free one ran out, it didn't work, and the printer reported that it failed its self-test. The printer had already reported it was a genuine cartridge when I first put it in, so I could be confident it hadn't been a fake, and the other diagnostic tests like cleaning the print heads didn't do any good.

I checked the HP website for advice on what to do and was advised to check the printer warranty on-line before calling them. The HP warranty checker said the printer was out of warranty from a date before I had even bought it (it was only a month or two old), and when I did it a second time to double-check, it came up with an even earlier date. On this occasion, although usually buying things through Amazon, I had bought this one from John Lewis to get click-and-collect, so I called them. They were very good and having established that it was still well in warranty, they put me straight through to HP customer service (no queue!!).

Two HP agents spent about 30 minutes on the phone, first trying to understand why the warranty was showing wrongly on their website when it was right on their screens (it was corrected afterwards, though!), and then asking me to go through various checks and tests on the cartridge before finally agreeing that the new cartridge was faulty, and agreeing to send me a new one.

This was a Friday afternoon and I was told the new one would come by UPS, but it would take four days. I pointed out that when they had supplied faulty product, which is almost certainly a pretty rare event, they should be able to replace it overnight. Anyway, I was given a tracking number and warned not to try to track it for a couple of hours until it was in the UPS system.

Some hope! The tracking number I was given was (and is) not recognised by UPS, it must be an internal number used by HP, so that was a waste of time. But on the Monday morning, UPS sent me a proper tracking number by email, and by that evening they had actually collected the cartridge from HP and associated it with the address label which they had proudly told me earlier had been printed that morning.

The cartridge itself came from an HP fulfilment centre in the French Alps, and was routed via a nearby UPS depot, then Lyon, then somewhere near Paris, then Walsall, then Dartford, and finally delivered to me in rural Kent, on the fourth working day (Wednesday). That cartridge worked fine.

I do understand hub and spoke logistics networks, but this was ridiculous. We all know the printer manufacturers make their money on the ink, not the printers, and generally they are reliable. But on the very odd occasion when it goes wrong, they need to be a lot zippier about smoothing over the problem, otherwise we may as well take a chance with the other end of the market and save ourselves some money. And I reckon it might pay HP to look again at the relative pros and cons of how they deal with this situation regarding a prompt replacement service, as the current approach will not be the cheapest and is locking in poor customer service.

Shoddy quality - these cartridges have not lived up to expectations.

Like some others, I too have encountered problems with my HP printer telling me these are not original HP cartridges!

Today I needed to print urgent family documents and one cartridge was said to be not original, and then the same happened with a second!

I have since gone to PC world, bought a couple of new cartridges and they work perfectly well - so I know it is not my printer at fault here!

I need a print cartridge supply I can rely on - and these, for me, just are not worth the risk any more, having tried a number in the past.

sorry to sound negative, but there isn't much else I can say - with high electronic monitoring, the printer tells me what it tells me and doesn't allow any overrride - so I will have to throw the cartridges away and just accept the financial loss as well as the hassle!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's an ink cartridge??

I'm really only writing this because Amazon sent me an email requesting a review.

It's an ink cartridge. The ink looks good on paper. I'm hugely impressed with the way I can read things I've printed using this ink cartridge :) That said, the five stars are for functionality. Ink jet ink, as I'm sure you know, is a huge rip off. The HP printer I'm using now, cost me just £5 more than the new ink cartridge I wanted (but wasn't in stock) for my other perfectly good printer and it came with ink and I was in a rush. However, new printer software is rubbish and stopped my HP scanner from working. So I've gone from being a huge Hewlett Packard fan to 'I wouldn't touch their kit unless you gave it to me'. So 1 star for cost, 5 stars for ink that does what ink is supposed to do and 0 stars for HP.

Got this to replace an empty cartridge on my HP Photosmart printer. The previous XL cartridge had lasted nearly 18 months, so not too bad. I always go for the XL rather than standard as it is better value. Whilst HP cartridges are more expensive than compatibles, having had a few duff compatible / refill cartridges in the past I prefer to trust the quality of the genuine cartridges. The cartridge doesn't come with any recycling/return envelope to recycle to empty one, so if you're environmentally minded you have to complete a web form for HP to send you a reply-paid envelope to recycle the old cartridge. Either that or put it in an appropriate recycling facility. Would have given it a higher star rating if the cost of these cartridges was no so exorbitant.

Several years ago I decided that I should try a supermarket's own-brand of ink for my HP PHOTOSMART printer, and that's where I made a mistake. The quality and performance was terrible, and potentially damaged the machine.

It was a false economy to buy non-HP consumables, and I never repeated the trial.

In buying original HP INK, like this product, you are guaranteed a density of colour, accuracy of hue and total compatibility that will not damage your machine. The XL (extra large capacity version) is superb in delivering a substantial amount of high quality printouts, whether photos or simple paper documents.

Will I change from HP again? No, it's not worth it just to save a few pounds in the short-term.

I get these every time now. I do a lot of printing in the home office and was getting tired of how quickly the normal cartridges ran out. These xl ones really do last much much longer and it means I have to worry less about printing things. Further, having tried refilled, refurbished and I suspect fake cartridges, I now swear by the original HP ones.

Another printing related tip - explore your printer 'properties' when you go to print a document - there is often the option to 'print as draft' or 'save toner' and it really does cut down on ink usage.
