How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

I've read many horror books which promise a lot but don't deliver, The Watchers is an unexpectedly absorbing, dark and disturbing book and I loved it from start to finish.

It's so clever, fooling readers into thinking we know exactly what is happening and suddenly the twist hits when least unexpected, which throws the story onto a whole new level.

I haven't been so excited about discovering a new author for many years. If you like Stephen King and Adam Nevill, then this is the book for you.

2.0 out of 5 starsquite simply, it doesn’t work
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 December 2021
How careless can you be? I mean, it’s a decent book I guess, it just doesn’t work that’s all. thee are no laundry facilities and no explanation as to how they manage bathroom needs during the time the light is on. How come the light bulb never blows? What do they do for toilet paper? Where did the blankets come from? You’d only have with you, what you stand up in and yet there’s a shelter and apparently blankets but no tent so campers don’t appear to have accounted for them so, where did they come from? It’s why i give it two stars for plot not plot execution. Not good at all but, if you’re prepared to overlook the glaringly obvious flaws you might enjoy the story for its own sake I suppose.

The Avid Reader
5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing. Don't Miss It.

I was worried I wouldn't really get into this, but within a few scant pages, I was beguiled by the incredibly beautiful writing style. So fluid and easy. So poetic in its descriptions. I was also worried about the plot getting "stuck", due to its confined setting - but there is plenty of discovery and flurries of activity. The pace really starts to gallop somewhere past halfway and I lost serious time absorbed in the book. Yes, creepy/scary, yes gripping and triple yes to the tension being racked up to boiling point.
The character of Mina is beautifully drawn, so you have to fall for her....Mina and the yellow one. What a character this golden creature is in his own right. A sort of exotic canary warning system.
I am rarely so overwhelmed with fear for the characters that I can barely read the words, but this book had me in its grip. If you don't read this, you will have wasted an opportunity. Writing as good as this is rare.
I am hoping that there will be a sequel, as I need more of this utterly brilliant writing. I would have given 10, but alas....my words cannot do it justice.
PS: One reviewer said, "it didn't work", as there were too many unexplained loose ends, like, "where did all the blankets come from?". Well, where did the concrete structure come from?! This is explained perfectly well towards the end of the book. I dont want to say how, as it would be a huge spoiler.
Anyway, as a debut novel, this writer has all the markings of a very bright star.

I almost said shiny!

This is a claustrophobic, dark and eerie read! I couldn't tear myself away from this novel. I loved the concept of this book and it's so well written that I found myself completely immersed in this story. A really clever and original book. I can't wait to read more by this author.

I absolutely loved The Watchers
I was so apprehensive about reading it as I was scared I was going to be scared. But it's more creepy than scary!
I read the book during my breaks at work, and today, I finished it. I was like OMG, OMG.
I loved how it was written; it's in 3rd person and from each character but mainly focuses on Mina.
I found my heart racing at times, and I just had to get to the next page.
The only downside I have is that I figured it out too soon, but I still enjoyed how it paved out, and I didn't guess that ending.

What makes a good Horror Novel? Darkness? Suspense? Melancholy writing? An original tale?
No one really knows we just know what we enjoy and what we do not. I loved this novel, surprised often by the fact it is a debut novel (it wore the gloss of a seasoned writer) it bears the pace of a thriller, the basis is clever and reasonably original, it has bite and several twists in the tale. Some will notice that many things are not mentioned which would be important under the circumstances that our characters found themselves, but these things would simply slow the pace of the story. I would rather figure them out for myself. I will be looking forward to the next novel by A.M. Shine in anticipation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really good

A bit padded but not hugely, some may like this but I find it unnecessary but easy enough to flick forward and pick back up. That's the only negative. Genuinely good, solid, well told story and a cut above the normal efforts of most in this genre, a good way above. The book gets better and better till come the end, the first thing I did was to check to see if there was a part two. Read many reviews of other books saying " this book is superb " etc only to read them and wonder what the reviewer was on when they wrote the review. Stick with this one, it's the real deal, it's what you were probably looking for. Don't get bogged down by the detail unless it's your thing and keep with the story till the end. This book left me satisfied and wanting more which for a lot of books with rave reviews, is not always the case, hope you enjoy as much as I did and well done the author !

I really liked this book it kept me intrigued to the end the premise using forgotten folklore and the setting of being trapped in a small space in a vast forest was really creepy and unsettling, I liked the relationship between the four strangers growing into a dysfunctional type of family and the parrot was almost like a beacon of hope, great ending did not see it coming I hope there may be more to this story in the future and am very impressed by the writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favourite novels in recent memory

I went into this having never heard of it and knowing nothing, and I am very glad I did. This book was amazing, I don't even know where to start. A lot of the time in horror stories the characters can feel kind of disposable, but I really got invested in the characters for this one, it does a great job of putting you in their shoes and as a result the suspense was crazy. The book felt like watching a movie at some points with how immersed I was. The plot is really interesting too, there was a point a bit over halfway through when I thought the book was going to end soon and wasn't sure how the ending was going to be padded out, but I think the latter part of the book actually had me even more engrossed, I couldn't predict this book at all and I enjoyed the ride all the way through. As an Irish person I was really happy to find this great book by an Irish author, and I'm definitely looking forward to any of his future works!
