Stephen Leather's books are addictive, including The Hunting

This is a very different book, meticulously researched as ever. I am a mid seventies woman living alone and Stephen Leather's books are far and away my favourite. I wasn't sure about The Hunting as it takes us to a very different world but once I got started, read it in 2 days. I was surprised at the ending but fair play - I won't say any more about that. I send congratulations and huge thanks to Stephen for providing such absorbing and exciting books which have helped me more than I can say over this last year. I am having the pleasure of re-reading his early books and find them great companions.

Not at the standard that Leather usually delivers

I previously enjoyed the standalone (non-Spider) stories from Leather, especially the Chinaman, the birthday girl, and the bombmaker, so I looked forward to The Hunting. The start was quite good as it resembled a Gerald Seymour approach of an anti-hero with Raj being in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, the story then became very formulaic and I did not feel a lot of suspense in the woods and the ending was so easily sign-posted that I felt that this did not meet the expected high standard.

I was lucky to get an advanced copy of this book.Yet again Steve Leather delivers an amazing story.I found it powerfully emotive.I seriously hated Van der Sandt and hunting animals but as usual Steve gives you a counter balance.The jihadists were given their own personalities and quips that made them real.I almost felt sorry for them at one point.Raj is a superb character.The action and tension was incredible but the finale was epic .Excellent as usual from this talented author.

Great read if you skip the first couple of chapters

The book itself, after I skipped the first couple of chapters was the usual thrilling read from Mr Leather. However, I was almost going to put it down due to the content of the most vilest sport ever..... trophy hunting. I wouldn't have minded so much if Stephen had just touched on it, but to explicitly document the killing of a wild elephant was more than I could bare, so I skipped the chapters till I got to the main start of the story. I must admit, I was disappointed that the booked opened as it did so for those that abhor the killing of wild animals, skip the first couple of chapters.

This story illustrates the breadth of Stephen Leather’s writing. This is about Billionaire big-game hunter Jon van der Sandt revenge as his family have been killed by jihadist terrorists. He has the terrorists captured and brought to his American estate for them to be released in his vast forest area. He then sets out to hunt them down with the intent to kill them all. Things don’t turn out quite as he expected as one the captured men was being held was a prisoner of the terrorists - Doctor Raj Patel. Raj is a British ex marine who intends doing all he can to survive. Excellent reading.

Raj was ex marine commando now working as a doctor in Syria patching up the wounded after the Syrians & Russians bombed the city. He worked in an underground hospital in poor conditions with very little meds or equipment. He had to work with what little he had.. Meanwhile ISIS had murdered several holiday makers in Northern Cyprus & made their getaway to Syria back to their desert training camp. But after an accident with a best bomb they needed a doctor. They raided the hospital & kidnapped Raj ,the only doctor. This is where the mistaken identity begins. A very good storey by this talented author.

A slight departure from his previous books but just as exciting.
I am always impressed by the research done into the detail of his stories,precise descriptions of the weaponry and even the flora and fauna.

I eagerly await the next Spider Shepherd story.

As it reminded me of the standalone good ones the author has done for £4 but yeah for a four to five pound thriller for a hard back needs linger story better twists
