Was excited to buy this following the reviews and recommendations. Sorry to be negative but this was poor. Neither scary nor exciting. Poor character development and ridiculous plot. Save your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast-paced and creepy
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 May 2022
First off, this book needs to be made into a film. Immediately. It was so incredibly cinematic and gave me real The Cabin in the Woods vibes, which is one of my favourite horror films.

Despite the premise, this was more than just a gory fright-fest though, it was a brilliantly crafted character-driven book, and White does a fantastic job at creating a whole host of seemingly disparate characters - all with a common goal - and gradually drawing out their pasts. Whilst some were more likeable than others, they each had their rationales for taking part in the competition.

Split into day-by-day chapters, the tension ramps up as the competitors begin to find out more about the game, why they might be there and who or what might be hunting them. But the book is as much about the characters searching within themselves for hidden strengths as it is finding out who may or may not survive the competition.

After the initial setting-the-scene, this was a fast-paced, real heart-in-the-mouth thriller, with a supernatural element. It was really creepy and has already been living in my head since I finished it. In fact, I had a dream about it last night 😱

I absolutely loved this book. If you're a fan of thrillers, horrors, the supernatural, or just well-written character-driven books I would highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!!

I was over the moon to be accepted to read this ARC as it sounded incredible, so thanks to the publisher & author.

Wow is all I can say about this book! Hunger Games has absolutely nothing on this but saying that if you love the Hunger Games you’ll adore this book.

I emphasised with Mack right from the beginning as she’s suffered terrific loss and terror (I’m glad Mack became friends with Ava ( reluctantly ) so she wasn’t alone like she’s always been) and she took the opportunity to be in the competition to win the £50k so she could leave the shelter and maybe start a new life somewhere else but it didn’t sound good to begin with, a game of hide and seek in a huge abandoned theme park in the middle of nowhere with no phone signal.

I enjoyed each characters back story and loved how you learned more about them every few pages , it kept you on your toes and engaged in the book wanting to to find out more.

All in all the story is very chilling and you can actually feel yourself in the abandoned park as you wait with the others all day in your hiding spot and hope your don’t get found!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it

When she enters a hide-and-seek competition based in an abandoned theme park, Mack is pretty confident in her chances of winning. All she has to do is hide, and she’s an expert at that. But as the other competitors begin disappearing one by one, the competition takes a sinister turn and Mack starts to realise that the stakes might be higher than any of them could have imagined.

I absolutely loved this book. Firstly, the premise of a high-stakes hide-and-seek competition really appealed to me, and was surprisingly plausible in the current age of reality TV. Secondly, Hide is really, really well written. The pacing is good and Mack is a very likable central character.

The one area where it lacked a little was in the split narration following all fourteen competitors. Fourteen is a lot of characters to try to keep track of, so this was a little confusing at times. Luckily, they start dropping like flies pretty early on, so the number of characters to follow cuts down quickly!

There’s also a supernatural twist which was right up my street.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable

I love amusement parks and as a child, I enjoyed playing 'Hide and Seek' so the premise for 'Hide' by Kiersten White immediately caught my attention.
Our protoganist is one Mack (Mackenzie) who mysteriously is invited to participate in a Hide and Seek tournament with 13 other contestants. The prize for successfully hiding (surviving) for 7 days in the amusement park, without being found, is $50,000. Definitely a tempting offer!
Mack is homeless and currently residing at a shelter whenever receives her invite. We quickly learn that Mack has a tragic backstory, involving the death of her family. It is only when the tournament begins that a fellow contestant reveals the truth.
We learn very little about the other contestants at this early stage but that does not matter as they quickly disappear and the author has time to flesh out Mack, Ava, Brandon etc as the storyline progresses. There is a sense of Christie's 'And Then There Were None' as characters quickly die and the remaining group slowly realise that this tournament is far deadlier than they could have imagined.
I loved the supernatural element to the story and there are plenty of amusing moments due to the the snarky comments from the contestants (in particular Ava) and the description of Linda, the erm, host.
A highly enjoyable read and my only disappointment is that there was no epilogue as I wanted to learn what happens next for the winners.

5.0 out of 5 stars I would recommend this book!

I had a big idea about how the supernatural element would happen within the story (I could tell it would be the seekers) but couldn’t work out exactly what that supernatural element could be. It wasn’t actually what I was expecting.

It was definitely hard memorising fourteen different characters, so I’m glad Kiersten decided to focus more on some than others, fleshing out the characters that needed fleshing out. I definitely had my favourites and ones I didn’t care much for. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll just say that my favourite character was unfortunately “eliminated” towards the end, and the method really shocked and broke me.

My only criticism is that the story was very, very fleshed out at the beginning and then ended too suddenly. I would have really enjoyed and appreciated an epilogue.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb thrill-ride

What a fantastic, gripping read this book is. From start to finish the pace is relentless, the characters are relatable and the tension is palpable. Early on in the book I flagged up the name of the town and dismissed it, then about halfway through suddenly everything fell into place with a huge lightbulb moment. The story shines a light on modern expectations and entitlements is very cleverly done.

Hide by Kiersten White sucked me in from the first line to the viciously perfect end. What began as a skim of the beginning ended with me staying up waaaaay too late and waking up waaaay too early to consume this story in all of its glory. I knew from the dedication that this was going to be intense and it so is, it so perfectly is.

“To the youngest generations we’ve tasked with saving us all: You shouldn’t have to. I’m so sorry.”

I loved this book, the social commentary simmering underneath, is a scream that sinks its fangs under your skin. Intensely character-based, with elements of horror and the beauty of being human and finding your way back to choosing and wanting to live. It is found family, the sweetest subtle romance, friendship, and sacrifice.

“Just because she shouldn’t have to be so damn strong doesn’t mean that she isn’t.”

Through tremendously skilled writing, the layers of repercussions and consequences of the choices made by those who came before, only to leave behind a mess for the next generation to fix and clean, is seen and felt and it’s magnificently terrible. This book is one of my favorites of 2022 and will always have a place on my bookshelf. I am hopeful that this could be a movie someday. . .

The characters will live with me for ages and I’ll always be wondering what happens after the last page. Stupendous, intense, can’t recommend it enough. I’ve already thrown it at my family and told them to read it.

Also, Mack and Ava are everything. Throw in the friendships formed between characters, it’s just. . .chef’s kiss.

“But she doesn’t run for Ava. She runs toward Ava, trusting absolutely that Ava will be ready.”
