How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsAmazing story telling that provides subtle guidance for a more strong willed child
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 December 2019
I heard Ben Miller on Radio 4 this weekend and this book spoke to me instantly when the plot was discussed. I have a physics degree and an often naughty youngest child. This book was written for our family!

My 8YO is on chapter 6 already and beams from ear to ear when devouring it. We've read a little together and the reading level is perfect for her, with only a few words needing explanation. There a few topics relating to black holes that are covered very well, but have not fear, this is about the concept of a black hole sucking everything in, not trying to create mini scientists.

Story concept feels genuinely novel and pace is gentle but has enough momentum to keep the pages turning. The beauty (reading ahead a little at night) is the soft message coming later about how sometimes problems are better solved and worked through, not "disappeared".

So far, so good. We've also bought another of his books. It's always great to discover a new author that kids love, with his own take on a writing style from personal experience.

Worth just quickly pointing out that whilst there are some beautiful accompanying illustrations in the book, they are few and far between (probably every 20-30 pages or so) Worthwhile knowing depending on how image based your child’s reading is.

It is boring, trying to finish it so that I can start another book. I like to finish the book I have started. :(

4.0 out of 5 stars Might be scary for some kids

The book is wonderfully written, however my very imaginative/creative 9 year old son was scared of the black hole - a key part of the book. I even had to research how close the nearest black hole to earth is and how long it would take to get there! I then explained this to him, to help put his mind at rest. I was exactly the same as a child and so was able to empathise! Ben Miller actually has a response at the back of the book to deal with such fears (I wish I’d seen that before my son had started reading it). My son still hasn’t read all of the book (I have); I’m hoping once his older brother has given the thumbs up, he will attempt to read it again. We are fans of B Miller in this house, so we may try his other book for young kids.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written but muddled ending

This is, on the whole, better written than most of the children's books with celebrity names on that I have come across. My 7 year old grandson followed the early parts of the story and even guessed what would happen next. Like many authors, however, having built up a complicated plot, you can sense the author's panic as they realise there is no good way to conclude the story within the word count. So, with no satisfactory explanation, everything suddenly gets sorted out at the last moment and they all live happily ever after. The author did not intend this, but if there is a moral in this book, it is not to trust children's entertainers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant story

I read chapter books to two of my children every night, and I thought this book sounded interesting.
I've sneakily read ahead as I was enjoying it too much and absolutely LOVED IT.

Harrison is prone to Kicking Off when he's worried, and this leads to him being given a black hole as a punishment when he's at a birthday party.

Many adventures come afterwards as he tries to control his temper.

Hopefully my children will heed the advice given in this book and not have quite so many kick offs themselves! Or else I'll have to book Shelley for a party..

I bought this book from my pocket money, as I loved another book by Ben Miller do much (The day I fell into a fairy tale).
This book was really really good, too. It was very exciting to read and I loved everything about it. I will lend it to my friend and I am sure she will love it, too.

I bought this to read to my class after seeing Ben Miller on Saturday kitchen. They are really enjoying it and finding the story very funny. As a teacher, it is easy to read out loud and my class love the shouty bits! For information I teach a nurture class of year 7’s and they are able to access the moral of the story with a little support.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely book

My 8 year old struggled to get in to novels. Everything we tried he lost interest in. This book he loved because he could relate to. We also had lots of talks about feelings and recognising how we react may not be how we actually feel! A lovely book, well written by someone who understands kids

If your kids are keen readers and love a good story with a little excitement like ours, then Ben Miller books are a great choice, we’ve had a few from him now and our son has thoroughly enjoyed each and every one. Would definitely recommend. Especially given how well priced they are on Amazon.

Our Grandchildren loved it - they even argued as to whom was going to read it by who was furthest on. However, once resolved, all was quiet - fantastic. Must admit - I had a sneak read and also enjoyed it.

I bought this to read to my Yr 3/4 class and they sit in silence listening and enjoying it. We haven’t finished yet but look forward to each chapter.
