How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsA powerful book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 February 2021
I'd heard so much about Colleen Hoover, I just had to see what all the fuss was about - so I picked up this book, and boy was I glad I did. It Ends With Us is compulsively readable with a heartbreaking and powerful story. The characters are so well drawn, there is no black and white here - which is hugely important considering the subject matter. To make your reader fall in love with a character and also hate them is quite a feat. I also really liked the simple yet sharply observed descriptions of how the characters moved; I don't think I've ever visualised that so vividly, and it really added to the action in each scene. I was completely drawn in and sat staring at the book long after I'd finished it. Thank you Colleen Hoover for bravely writing this story.

1.0 out of 5 starsWow. The power of social media.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 September 2021
I bought this book because of raving reviews about it on TikTok. Well the power of social media worked because I bought it and I can’t say I was anywhere as impressed as I thought I would be. In fact I wanted to stop reading it several times because it felt so cheesy. The storyline and events were sad topics but three quarters of the book was a cheesy love story that often made me cringe. As a lover of chick lit, even this was too much for me. I personally wouldn’t recommend. Sorry.

1.0 out of 5 stars Badly written pointless book

The note from the author at the end makes a bit more sense of this book for me. She has taken some of her own real life experience witnessing her parents abusive relationship and incorporated it into a disorganised, unrealistic story with one dimensional soap opera characters. When the neurosurgeon guy says he's going to be seperating conjoined twins I nearly stopped reading because of the ridiculousness and I should have. The letters to Ellen degeneres were just awful. Anyone could have sat down and written this book. It's garbage. What Colleen Hoover should've done is wrote a young adult fiction novel about the relationship with atlas and ended it with them finding eachother as adults. It probably still would have been terrible but young adults might be less discerning. She is certainly not a good enough writer to tackle the kind of issues she's tried to deal with in this book. There is no subtlety, no real insight and no authenticity to the way she writes about this subject.

I’m 23 and this book felt like it was written for someone much younger. It’s seems (I’m not sure how to put this correctly) obvious… everything that happens isn’t a surprise. It’s written in away that doesn't challenge me but makes me cringe. No way else I can put it. Has reduced my IQ.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just Bad Writing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 July 2022

I completely agree with the reviewer who commented on the power of social media. Don’t be fooled! With so many positive reviews I was excited for this to be my summer beach read. But now I am left utterly confused by the praise people are giving this book. I am not a literary snob but the writing is truly awful. I found myself cringing often at the repetitive, unsubtle, cliched and unrefined writing. The book is extremely over written, with the author thrusting the obvious down the readers throat at every turn, rather than allowing the reader to deduce anything for themselves - it breaks any kind of immersion. There is a reason no legitimate publications have even bothered to review this book. I say to everyone - you can do better!

Such an awful book, the time skips were so bad and the characters had no depth to them. There’s also no description of male lead which is horrible. Only good thing I could say, is that the diaries were good- it’s what saved the book. Even though I didn’t like it, I was very invested in the book.

1.0 out of 5 stars So shallow

A book for teenagers perhaps? Very shallow, one dimensional, cheesy.. ‘bulging biceps and cool haircuts’ that makes one’s knees buckle and want to go have sex, apparently.
I am half way through it and I don’t think I can force myself to continue.. disappointing to find that top bestseller is such a bad piece of writing. Note to myself to take raging reviews with the pinch of salt. I will not be attempting to read any other books by Colleen Hoover

I’m all for advocating against bad people and this book is about abuse. HOWEVER, I just think for a book that is hyped up so much on booktok that this is very fanfiction like - I’ve read too much fanfic as a teen and this is written just like those. Very bites lip and pinches cheeks to make blush and gets out of bed and goes straight out vibes. But then again I did find the recommendation on tiktok- by an adult so idk. Each to their own.

1.0 out of 5 stars No. Don’t do it.

Okay, so TikTok made me buy it! It’s absolutely ridiculous that this book has gained such a cult status. I can overlook the notion that they met on a rooftop and he tells her he doesn’t do relationships, but somehow he falls in love with her. I can overlook the notion that a rich bored woman would just casually walk into a shop and ask for a job because ‘she’s bored’. I can overlook a lot of things, but the needing to tell what happened in the past by way of letters to talk show host Ellen, really was annoying. I found myself wanting to skip over pages upon pages of the book because I just wanted this to be a tortured love story, and it was and at the same time, it wasn’t. Also if you are easily triggered by DV then this isn’t for you.

Do not be sucked in by the hype! One-dimensional characters, predictably dull plot and truly terrible writing - full of hackneyed descriptions and barely grammatical sentences. Worse than 50 Shades of Grey, and that's saying something. I only continued reading it because it was the last book I had left with me on holiday and there was nowhere to buy or borrow a new one from.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lightweight cheesy love story

I bought this because of the reviews. As I read the love story it felt like a really simplified, flat, cringe-worthy romance. Not at all real or imaginative. It as like everything the author thought was wonderful in a romance thrown in that she could think of.
I also felt like it was all designed to explain why women stay in abusive situations - but it didn't do that subject justice. It goes from fairy-tale cringe-worthy romance to wife battering unbelievable ending.
I was expecting a jolly good read, instead I felt I was reading a book written by a teenager.
