5.0 out of 5 starsCharlie and Nick...BIG sigh. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 May 2021
Gah!! These two...I just want to hug them to bits!! All the stars....🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

This volume has it all including a very heartfelt and serious message from the Author [but told in a very matter of fact way] about mental illness and how you can and MUST get help. We know that Charlie has had anxiety/self-harm issues in the past, and tied into that, problems with eating but in this story, Charlie finally confesses all to Nick and Nick is so upset that HE starts to panic. Thank God for Nick's mum who is completely amazing [and MUCH more understanding than Charlie's own mum], and things eventually start to get better.

There are characters I dislike intensely such as Nick's brother David [🤬🤬], and I'm not that keen on his stay-away dad either, but there are FAR more likeable/loveable characters 💕💕💕, too numerous to name here, who make you feel as though everything will turn out OK in Heartstopper: Volume Five, which will sadly be the last in the series. I understand that Netflix have picked up the rights to the series, and can only hope that they don't Americanise it too much...otherwise it will be ruined. ***update. I understand that the cast is British and is based over here, so fingers crossed. 🤞🤞🤞***

2.0 out of 5 starsI was really looking forward to this book.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 August 2021
I couldn't wait until December when it will be published in Canada , so ordered the book from Amazon UK. It was a very quick read and I can hardly wait for the fifth and final in the series. Well drawn with believable dialogue. It might me aimed at the youth market but that doesn't mean it wasn't enjoyable to the older generations.

5.0 out of 5 stars So so good

I just don’t care if this isn’t marketed with a grown woman my age in life.....I’ve read them all!

This one completely broke me into tiny pieces.

If it’s not enough to lead a normal life around bullying homophobic people now we finally learn how bad Charlie’s distress has gone.

When you love someone and they are in pain you do not walk away. And I love how this lad is only 16 (turns 17 in this book) and is wanting to help the person he’s in love with and do it right.

I wish everyone had a mom like in this book. Supportive, down to earth and making it an aim to help her son to help his boyfriend.
That’s all we as parents can do, be there. Be supportive.

Sometimes you just aren’t able to, qualified experts may be the route you need to encourage them to go down.

I can’t wait for book 5.
Following these two guys so very much in love I need to know what happens next.

Such a wonderful insightful author.

5.0 out of 5 stars This ship is FOREVER!

Alice Oseman doesn't play fair with my heart. I'm just... Overwhelmed by my love for these precious beans 🥺 I'm not going to lie, this one had me weeping a fair bit because I know these feelings all too well. Please tread gently, friends, as the content has the potential to be triggering for some. ❤️

Volume 4 focuses mainly on Charlie's mental health and oof, did it hit me hard or what! I think if anyone has ever struggled with their mental health at any point in their life, they will be able to identify with what Charlie goes through. Things do get worse before they get better, and Charlie learns that it's not going to be an easy or straight road, but it's possible for things to look up, and it's okay to have others to lean on for support.

I know all my reviews have gone on about how much I love Nick and Charlie, but really, it's true. I didn't think I could love them more but volume 4 has proven me so wrong. This ship is FOREVER.

ps. I adore Nick's mum and his relationship with her, I adore Charlie's sister, Tori, and I loathed, absolutely *LOATHED* Nick's brother, who is the absolute WORST! I don't even understand how someone as soft, sweet and bighearted as Nick can be related to someone as awful as his brother. It's wild!

pps. i equally adore all the other couples in this story, even Mr Ajayi and Mr Farouk! 😍 The "Firsts" heartstopper mini-comic featuring their relationship was simply too adorable and made me want a comic just for them (pls?)!

The Sleepy Reader
5.0 out of 5 stars LGBT Friendships and eating disorders
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 May 2022

Charlie and Nick’s relationship continues to grow and develop. This book is quite different to the other three and has a much larger focus on mental health. Charlie is gearing himself up to telling Nick that he loves him. Meanwhile, Nick is worried about Charlie’s mental health and whether he has an eating disorder. Charlie is later diagnosed with Anorexia and spends some time away in a hospital to help him to recover. This is well depicted with the artwork, showing that Charlie is now slightly bigger though still very skinny.

I think it was brave of Alice Oseman to cover such a deep and disturbing mental illness in this light way without being dismissive of the issues. It shows the effects of the illness on Nick but not those around them. Charlie and Nick’s relationship gets much deeper as a result and this volume covers a much larger amount of time.

I have really enjoyed this series. While it is mainly focused on coming out and a new and unlikely relationship, it packs a good punch and covers a lot of things, especially thoughts and feelings in such a short space of time.

I would recommend this easy-to-read graphic novel, aimed at young adults to all. Anyone wanting to learn more about LGBT relationships, coming out, young friendships and eating disorders would find this a good and easy place to start.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Heart!

This series is just too cute! In Vol. 4 we see Charlie struggle with an eating disorder which Nick does his best to support him through. Nick has troubles of his own dealing with an unsupportive sibling and with coming out to his Dad.

Despite these heavy topics, we still get some adorable moments of affection between Charlie and Nick. We also get some insights into the lives of Nick and Charlie's friends who are all such friendship goals. I really enjoy this series, it just warms my heart and I can't help but smile reading it.

Also, not completely related to this story, but I wish all comics were formatted like this. The font is large and easy to read and there's not too much happening on any one page so the simple beautiful line drawings have plenty of room to breathe. I love the style and layout of these comics which is just an added bonus to a great story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just a perfect story.

Young or old, if you like LGBT+ romance, the whole Heartstopper saga is not to be missed. It's not shakespeare, there are no mind bending twists. It's just a beautiful love story between two boys.

Nearly everybody I've spoken to about Heartstopper identifies with Charlie, and equally everyone wishes we had a Nick when we were at school.

This is the hardest volume of the story to read, as this is where Charlie really isn't well. Yet this is also where Alice Oseman comes into her own. How to write a love story featuring a self-harming anorexic and have the book feel overwhelmingly positive and hopeful? Ask Alice, because she pulls off the impossible.

And that is the best thing about this book for me, it faces dark topics, but never gets lost in them, there's always hope, there's always a light at the end of the tunnel.

I cannot recommend highly enough.

The Heartstopper series makes my heart sing. I whizz through every volume and this is no exception. I care for the characters so much and in this one, there are some truly excellent moments (the same with the others but this has a few pay offs I really adored). Some of the themes from the previous volume are explored in greater detail here, but rather than it initially shock me like in the previous volume, this time I was more prepared and again, everything is handled so sensitively and I learned a lot. I’ll forever feel grateful to the Heartstopper series. I’m just nervous that volume 5 is the last one! Author and illustrator Alice Oseman has created something truly amazing and special with this series and I thank her for that.

So beautiful, heartwarming, full of emotions and so very important to have these books exist. The story will resonate with a lot of people and even if it doesn't will make people love the characters and give understanding and compassion. With these characters, how can it not?! So so good and I'm so glad there is a 5th book coming but so sad it's the last. Highly recommend this series to every human in this earth!

The way that Oseman approached mental health was delicate but strong at the same time. She touches many sides of it - from the importance of family and partner support to self-education and self-awareness. This was powerful and I hope it inspires many people to reach out and understand themselves more. Everything this graphic novel brings is rich, careful and beautiful. I am so happy I decided to read it.
