I've never read a graphic novel before, I've owned a couple but never really read them. That is, until now. I ordered this last year during the first lockdown because quite literally everyone and their mothers were raving about how great it is. I put off reading it as I was worried it wouldn't live up to the hype. But this month started with a glorious four day weekend, two of those day I had on my own so I had to make the most of it.

This book met ALL my expectations, lived up to and surpassed the hype and has nestled itself into my stoney heart. As this is a Graphic Novel I can't make any comments on the writing style. But the conversation exchanges between characters just felt so genuine and real.

Like, this is the book that all Young Adults need to be reading, I love that there is representation in this book, I love that it shows two different young men figuring themselves and life out. Showing the struggles young people can go through as they grow to understand their sexuality. This to me, is one of those important reads, and because it's not continuous pros but a graphic novel it can be so much more easily received and digested. I read this in the space of a couple of hours and instantly order Volume 2.

Charlie and Nick are beyond adorable, from two different "cliques" and two different year groups. You could easily imagine these being people you went to school with.

All the drawings throughout this book were spot on and it was really clear what was happening and when. Also, what the characters were feeling/experiencing.

I will say this until I'm blue in the face. This is a book everyone needs to read. It's a book that can start conversations and a book to normalise different sexualities to the YA audience as having a book with non-straight characters can still be a rare thing to see. I think books like Heartstoppers, gives YA members of the LGBTQ+ a place in the reading world, it gives them representation. And my personal opinion is that there needs to be more representation, more reality that these YA face. One of the gifts of reading a book is being able to see yourself in some characters, I think this book allows everyone the chance to see themselves whether they are straight or a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

I definitely give this 5 stars, probably more if I could just on the sheer cuteness of the characters.

1.0 out of 5 starsClever Comic book!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 June 2022
A lot of effort has gone into this comic book but unfortunately it fails to generate any particular emotions/feelings! The good thing is that it is very easy to “read” in less than 1 hour! A lot of the cartoon images are pointless/meaningless and the comic style fails to generate any “characters”. I expected words not cartoons! Sorry, not for me!

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect coming of age LGBTQ+ story.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 September 2020

My first ever graphic novel. My first ever magical experience of actually SEEING a YA LGBTQ+ story come to life on the pages.
I truly adored it.

"Boy meets boy.
Boys become friends.
Boys fall in love."

This is the simple equation of love, though, the gay factor can complicate things a bit.

Charlie is a year 10 (14 yo) in an all boys grammar school. He is openly gay (not by choice, he was outed a year ago), he is an overthinker and then he meets shy and cute Nick Nelson, rugby captain.

They become close, they become friends and then come the challanges.

Confused sexuality, coming-out, coming-out as a couple, saying the 'l' word for the first time. And... tons of awkwardness and cutness.

I had a huge smile on my face while reading this. It was just so real. The uncertainities that come with a new relationship, the extra cuteness that come from the pure heart of the two main characters. The lovely side characters who have their own little story to tell. It all adds up to a loveable story.

The emotions were extreme sometimes and seeing them through pictures and not just reading them made it more real and closer somehow. I saw the heartache. I saw the joy. I saw the struggle. And I saw the all consuming young love.

The drawing and art is amazing! The story flaws perfectly and the meaningful parts are emphasized just enough to get lost in it. Besides the conversations, the thoughts of the two boys are depicted as well with some memories and fantasies.

I fell in love with Nick and Charlie on the first page and couldn't stop until around a thoudand pages later when I ran out of published content.
(I now follow the story online and wait for every update like it's my next breath.❤)

I wish this story could reach every teen who struggles with coming out and managing life as a gay person.
Really, just give this to every boy out there.

An easy peasy 5 star review. I read this in 2 sittings as a buddy read. I easily could’ve devoured it all in one go though. It’s just such a warm and inviting book. I really needed something light after all my fantasy reading. 💤

The illustrations are fantastic! I’m obsessed with the different layouts in this book. It’s really made me want to get back into illustration myself for a start. Also the book itself is so 🤤. I’m obsessed with the size of this book, the cover is so smooth and the pastel cover is dreamy. They’re stunning books! 😍

Charlie and Nick are both just so loveable, I could really tell their characters in every page. It a VERY easy read, so little text I actually didn’t feel like I was in a book, it felt more like a tv show. Oseman did an amazing job writing and illustrating a teen romance. But even better an LGBTQ+ romance! Woohoo. It’s SO cute! Like cuter than any romance novel I’ve read this year for sure. 🥰

I’m desperate to read the next book but I also REALLY don’t want to finish the series, I won’t know what to do with myself. There’s a reason this book is hyped. I urge everyone, reader or not, to grab the first volume. You need this pair in your life. 👬 @lifeonasofa

REVIEW FOR AMAZON NOT THE BOOK
My copy arrived in such bad quality, the pages were cut all choppy. They were red along the bottom where the guide marks hadn’t been followed. It wouldn’t even sit flat on my shelf. I ordered a second one and returned my first, the second was even worse! I ended up buying from somewhere else and they arrived fine. Ive had to return several Amazon books, they just arrive so beaten.

5 shiny stars from me 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟...oh, and 5 hearts too 💙💚💛🧡💜.

This was an absolutely adorable read, a graphic novel which left me with a HUGE smile on my face, and a quick visit to Amazon to buy book 2 and pre-order book 3...that's how much I loved it. The drawing perhaps wasn't quite as good as say... the Fence series by C.S. Pacat, or the Starfighter online series by Hamlet Machine, but it's raw, realistic and BRITISH!! 🎉🎉🎉

14 year old Charlie, who already knows he is gay, and 16 year old Nick who just finds that there is something irresistible about Charlie that he hasn't found with anyone else...male or female. Is Nick bisexual or just Charlie-centric?? Can't wait to read the other books...😍😍😍😍😍

Heartstopper Vol. 1 definitely lives up to its hype of being a cute comic that is quick to read, one with diversity and a good representation with LGBT+ characters. It focuses on openly gay Charlie Spring as he finds himself becoming fast friends - which soon turns into a crush - with the year older rugby player, Nicholas Nelson; and for Nick, it's about him questioning his sexuality as he's always liked girls, yet now finds himself fast liking Charlie. There were moments in this book that broke my heart to have to read, but the majority of the time I was awwww-ing out loud at the cuteness of it all - the story itself, the growing friendship between Charlie and Nick, and the way Alice Oseman showed the development between these characters in her black and white graphics.

It does end in an I-need-the-second-volume-right-now cliffhanger, but not in a drastic way. More so, it just leaves us readers questioning what it is that'll be happening next, which in turn has now left ME all the more excited to get my hands on Heartstopper Vol. 2 so I can continue on reading Charlie and Nick's adorable love story together.

If you're looking for an enjoyable comic with cute graphics that shows the characters' emotions and chemistry really well, AND with an adorable romance that'll bring and keep a smile plastered to your face from beginning to end, then Heartstopper Vol. 1 is the one for you.

Sincerely,

I've heard good things about this one but I wasn't expecting to like it so much. Not surprisingly I finished in one sitting and I was a bit upset that it was over honestly.
I think this might be the first series I'm going to finish just because it's so relatable and I'm so happy for Charlie, he absolutely deserves better than Ben, who I really despise. I think regardless of sexuality, dealing with an abusive ex is something so on point and happens everywhere that you can relate.
I loved every minute of this reading and I strongly recommend it to anyone looking for a cute love story

MY HEART IS SO FULL OF FEELINGS!!! Nick and Charlie are so precious 🥺 That ending has my heart breaking a little bit but I’m glad that I went ahead and got the next volume cos I need to know what happens next asap! I didn’t think the art would really work for me but somehow it just fit this story so perfectly. It doesn’t need to be full of colour and sharp lines for it to wonderfully convey the sweet friendship between these two or the tentative more-than-friends feeling that grows between them the more time they spend together. Even with the simplicity of the storyline and the black and white artwork, Oseman managed to convey a host of thoughts and emotions that hit deep and they easily got me INVESTED in what happens to these sweet cinnamon rolls. Pls, I’m so ready for more! ❤️

What can I say? I watched heartstopper on Netflix on the recommendation of a friend and I’m so glad to have discovered it. I’m in my late 40s and a drama about teenage romance isn’t usually my cup of tea. As soon as I started to watch it I was enthralled. A story about discovering love. Teenage love is often so painful and ugly but this romance blossoming was so utterly charming that it made me wish my teenage years was similarly filled with a similar love story. The script, the acting, the composition of the shots, lighting and music were perfect.

Whenever a new Netflix series grabs me in this way and I discover it is based on a book or in this case a young adult graphic novel, I had to get it and read it. It is utterly brilliant. The author and artist, Alice Oseman, is an incredible talent and I can’t wait to view and read the rest of it.

I highly recommend this graphic novel and I also feel the same about the Netflix series.

Actually,
I didn’t liked the French version as much many words just didn’t sit right by me as an English teacher which is why I decided to go to Amazon UK to get the 4 books in English of course I bought an ebook first just to see if I would feel the same and sadly I was right The original version is 💯 % better than the one in French ! I just could finally truly fall in love with every single characters they all have their own personalities and I love that not a dull moment!! I’ve binged watched the serie since it came out on April 22nd and it’s just as good now I don’t know if I want to read the book or watch the serie. But most importantly there is finally an author who address the issues of coming out as a teen, bullying, mental health…. I’ve seen it plenty of time during my career so yes people “assuming” you’re gay” before you said anything or “after you decided to be yourself” the harassing will start by people who are enjoying themselves putting someone down and most of the stag and teachers just let it go and don’t stop the bully which is like telling them you’re doing great keep doing it ! And with the pressure the teen has it will take a BIG toll on the mental health which often led to suicide of kids and teens because people nowadays record on video the bullying post it online as if it was a game they don’t see the victim as a person anymore it’s just fun so they do it since no one stops them ! So I’m glad that in the serie they added the tracher who helped Charlie when he was bullied !
Im gonna stop now or I’ll spoil the whole serie that’s how much I love it ❤️
