4.0 out of 5 starsIf it wasn't for the obsession with sex this would be five stars
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 November 2019
Unnerved doesn't begin to sum up how I feel having finished this book. Also kind of needing a shower... although less so that some I have read - *cough* Gone Girl *cough*. This is one of those books that makes you doubt yourself and whether what you think you know is actually true. I found the atmosphere to be realistically creepy and the situation really felt for Lowen as she becomes steadily more paranoid, never quite sure that it isn't her mind playing tricks on her. The multi-faceted lies and manipulations are excellently shaped and laid out.

I'm not going to say that I enjoyed the diary excerpts; they are deeply, deeply disturbing. However, they felt real and whilst I certainly couldn't empathise with the person behind them, they are very good at forcing you to see through her eyes at the world. It is frightening at points and it is easy to get sucked into the fear and the disgust that Lowen is feeling. Characterisations are generally quite well done, although the gratuitous and constant sex became tedious rather quickly. I felt like I was getting to know all of the characters, with all their faults and whilst I wouldn't want to go on holiday with any of them, they definitely felt real. Each and every one of these characters is flawed and each and every one feels utterly real.

It is also a realistic glimpse at the very nature of grief and loss without ever becoming preachy, with all three adult characters grieving for someone close to them in very different ways. The concept of grieving for someone who you don't particularly like all that much is also woven into the narrative quite well, and how that gives a different but no less raw experience. I did however think more could have been done with the child; at times he seemed to be there just for the cuteness factor and his reactions and interpretations of what is going on could have been utilised to a far greater extent. I liked the kid, but that's all that I can say about him. He's in therapy, then he's not in therapy, he doesn't mention the girls and he loves his mother and he's back in therapy. There's no emotional pull with him though, it's all surface platitudes.

A full star gets knocked off however due to the constant use of sex as a blunt implement throughout this novel. It's almost every other page and it got really boring. If it's not Verity being screwed by Jeremy in her diary, it's Lowen thinking about screwing Jeremy or actually screwing Jeremy. I'm no prude and I have no issue with sexual content in books, but the over-reliance on it here really did work against it. I could see that it was part of how Hoover is building Verity's character, but it did very little for me. It's a pity because otherwise I flew through this dark and nasty book at a rate of knots, desperate to find out just what was going on and just as confused and horrified as Lowen.

I don’t know where to start with this one.it got so many rave reviews from, mainly US, readers and book clubs, I thought I’d try it myself. I’ve never read a Colleen Hoover novel so had no preconceptions but I didn’t think it was either well written or interesting. The novel is supposed to be creepy and suspenseful but it’s just a bit silly. I don’t want to give any spoilers but there were just so many parts of this novel that were completely unbelievable. When was the last time you heard someone say they ate a letter they wanted to dispose of? Seriously?

I hate romance novels as they don’t really reflect real life - they are far too convenient - woman meets handsome man, they fall in love and it’s all perfect - and they really undermine the idea that women can live happy fulfilled lives without being in a relationship at all times. Anyway, I hate romance and this is really just a romance with a slightly odd twist to it.

I’m glad it s a short book as it meant I didn’t waste more than a day on it and it’s safe to say I won’t be reading any more “CoHo” books ever again!

2.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing concept but ultimately disappointing

An intriguing concept and loads of great reviews made Verity an easy choice for a 99p Kindle Daily Deal, but unfortunately it was a bit of a let down for me. It was well written, so that wasn't the problem. The plot is described pretty thoroughly in the blurb at the top, but obviously it stops short of how everything unfolds. The autobiography that is central to the plot and how it is ultimately explained demands too much of a suspension of belief. To make matters worse, Hoover over explains things at the end in an attempt to justify it all. Why my experience differs to most of the other reviewers I have no idea, but it didn't work for me.

2.0 out of 5 stars Maybe I am one of the few who didn't like the book

TW: Do not read if you are pregnant.
► mother being cruel to her children
► mother wants and tried to kill her children

Since I found out CoHo books (with the help of another fellow blogger) I haven't missed a book and I'm always excited to read her new book. This one didn't differ from the others, although I'm reading it way later it was published. That's because I was curious but skeptical at the same time what a thriller book written by New Adult author will look like.

Maybe I am one of the few who didn't like the book and I have my reasons.

Firstly, another author finishing a series of dead or injured author is a big NO-NO for me. As much as I love (adore, worship and other great words) Millennium series by Stieg Larsson, I will never, never, ever put my hands on one of the 3 books written by David Lagercrantz that 'complete' the series. The last book from the series is The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest and that is that. Everything written after this book is for profits only, money-making and poorly attempt to make a name on behalf of somebody, who already is a great name in the industry.

Verity's plot is written around this kind of thing and it pulls me back from the book from the very beginning. Lowen is suspense books author. Her books didn't reach the top place in the best-seller chart, she barely manages to meet the ends. When one day, out of the blue, she received an offer to write the last three books to finish the series of the bestselling author Verity Crawford. Lowen is drawn back. She doesn't consider herself that good to write a bestseller and she was ready to reject the offer. Jeremy Crawford, Verity's husband, steps in and persuades her to write the books by telling her that actually Verity got inspired by Lowen's books and she is considered the best choice to finish the series.

Secondly, I know that this book is meant to be dark and disgusting maybe, but it should come with trigger warning at least. I'm 5 months pregnant as for today ( April 2020). With my partner, we tried to conceive for nearly two years and we almost started to consider IVF when I found out that I'm pregnant. My first three months was a nightmare and not because I went through all the downsides of pregnancy, to be fair - I'm having quite an easy pregnancy with no nausea and etc, but I was quite scared every time I went to the toilet because there was a possibility of that red spot on my panties.

You can't imagine how anxious I felt after the descriptive scene in which Verity is trying to abort her babies with metal wire at the toilet because Jeremy loves the babies more than he loves her. What a stupid piece of flesh you have to be to do this? Honestly, I went and throw up. This may sound good for the author because she did her job well and cause some reaction from the reader, but is this the reaction she wanted to provoke? To throw my insides out?

‘He kissed my stomach and looked up at me. I reached down and teased at strands of his hair with my fingers. “Do you love them?” He smiled because he thought I wanted him to say yes. “I love them more than anything.” “More than me?” He stopped smiling. He kept his hand on my stomach, but he scooted up, sliding an arm under my neck. “Different from you,” he said, kissing my cheek. “Different, yes. But more? Is your love for them more intense than your love for me?” His eyes scanned mine, and I was hoping he would laugh and say, “Absolutely not.” But he didn’t laugh. He looked at me with nothing but honesty and said, “Yes.” Really? His reply crushed me. Suffocated me. Killed me.’

‘He fell asleep while I was in the bathroom, attempting to abort his daughters with a wire hanger. I tried for half an hour until my stomach started to cramp and blood was running down my leg. I was certain more would follow. I climbed into bed, waiting for the miscarriage. My arms were shaking. My legs were numb from the squatting. My stomach hurt and I wanted to puke, but I didn’t move because I wanted to be in the bed with him when it happened. I wanted to wake him up, frantic, and show him the blood. I wanted him to panic, to worry, to feel bad for me, to cry for me. To cry for me.’

Right, after these paragraphs I had to take a break from this book for a while. I do want to finish it because I'm curious about what is staying behind the Crawford family tragedies and Verity's car wreck.

'Some families are lucky enough to never experience a single tragedy. But then there are those families that seem to have tragedies waiting on the back burner. What can go wrong, goes wrong. And then gets worse.'

After a  week break from Verity, I finally finished it. It is a good read and proper book for the author's first attempts in this genre. Quite predictable, though. I knew what the manuscript is from the very beginning, but still, the book was interesting, kept me engaged till the end and although I knew what will happen and all these disgusting scenes, I still wanted to finish it. (I skipped some parts with descriptive plans how to kill an infant).

I do enjoy the book in the book thing. We have the story told by Lowen's point of view, but we have the Verity autobiography manuscript that gives us another perspective of the events (a great part of which I skipped without regrets).
I’m beginning to think Verity writes from a villainous point of view because she’s a villain. Being evil is all she knows.

2.0 out of 5 stars Far fetched and disappointing

This was a book with a promising start but soon be came extremely far fetched. It just wasn't believable and didnt like any of the characters really. Can see this being the sort of book which goes on to become a film. When it clearly shouldn't. The sex scenes were extremely graphic and I question their relevance. The 5 star reviews for me turned out to be something of a red herring and I must admit to skim reading the last third of the book to get it done. When I didn't think it could get any more unbelievable... it did!

Im a parent, so I understand the concept. Just, there was something very 'off' with this story. What is the point of it? The characters were just a bit annoying. As far as hating motherhood, I've won countless medals for THAT. But I still don't get the point. The only part that the story may have conveyed (that I understood) was that motherhood is not for everyone and while we may have scary thoughts, we aren't actually monsters. But... But... Just no. The story centred around some flimsy what-have-you, caught up in a classical Zimbardo.

I am an enormous die-hard fan. I adore Colleen's writing. But this time, it went wrong. Im so sorry Colleen but it was just a downer. The only time I felt this way was when I read Hopeless. But Hopeless had more story to it.

This novel is pitched as "capturing [my] heart and blow[ing my] mind and, honestly. It didn't.

I disliked the characters and found them vapid and whiney. Everyone goes on about a twist but it didn't shock or surprise me. Yes, there is a pretty big twist at the end but it does not blow my mind.

This novel, in my opinion, is an opportunity for smut covered in some strange happenings.

2.0 out of 5 stars Really?

Ok I quite liked the 'is she catatonic?' plot but apart from that this is a bad book. So (spoiler) she commits these heinous acts and then decides to record all in a 'tell all' autobiography. And the manuscript capable of getting her arrested losing her family etc is conveniently left lying around for anyone to find. The big reveal at the end is just silly.

2.0 out of 5 stars Writing is technically very good but the plot is a headache.

As far as suspense goes this novel does very well to make you want to keep reading but the final twist at the end is completely unnecessary. While other facets of the plot are foreshadowed very well the ending comes out of nowhere and seems to exist for shock value.

The main character is pretty understandable and fleshed out but all other characters seem pretty empty. Verity herself is a pretty compelling antagonist in her autobiographical sections but once the final ending was revealed I was left sorely disappointed at her lost potential.

And I know sex sells but this book is obsessed with it. Even the main character seems exhausted of the amount of sex in this book.

This book was strange. I brought it a while back and started to read and just didn’t gel with it and stopped reading. A couple days I decided to start again and honestly wish I didn’t!
The book was just random in places and honestly horrible at some points, the plot was pretty basic to the point you could guess the plot twist and things, and it has hardly any character development at all.
I am a big fan of CoHo and have read most of her books and this one was raves about but honestly wasn’t my cup of tea.

I had to quit at 30%. Easy read but was home alone reading it at night. Not a good idea. It was so creepy /spooky!

I couldn’t really sleep- had to get up to put radio and lights on !!!
It depends on the genre you like , but definitely not for me and I would not recommend to anyone I know !
