Chelley Toy - TalesOfYesterday

Wow! Where do I start with this book! I enjoyed EVERY. SINGLE. WORD! It was hard to put down and when I did I couldn’t wait to pick it back up again!

An historical love story with a bisexual narrator, a famous old Hollywood actress, and all of her seven marriages. It tells the story of Evelyn, who wants to be famous, who learns early on in life that to get what she wants she has to play the part in every sense of the word. Now in her seventies Evelyn wants to share her life story with journalist Monique who has been personally picked by Evelyn. A tell all memoir about her life and her rise to fame. The glitz and glam of old Hollywood, the manipulation, the scandal, Hollywood cover ups, having to conform to society norms of the time and what it meant to be gay/bisexual during that time period.

It felt like non fiction. Like I was reading about Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor. Everything was so detailed. All the characters felt so real. Evelyn is flawed, ambitious and strong. A completely unapologetic character, manipulative and selfish who I loved! There are times she will frustrate you as a reader, but she is compelling and unforgettable! And with each husband she captivated me more with her spell.

The real reason for Evelyn picking Monique is intriguing and kept me hooked in the present day story telling. Evelyn’s rollercoaster life flows chronologically over the years and covers topics such as LGBTQ+ rights, diversity, female empowerment, sexuality, found family, motherhood and love. It is as much a story about Evelyn as it is about Harry and Celia’s life too. These two characters completely had my heart. I went on as much of an emotional journey with them as I did with Evelyn.

Taylor Jenkins Reid is without a doubt, a fantastic story teller. The way she writes her characters and their lives is addictive and very special.

Enough of my gushing. Remember. Life is short. Life is precious. Live life without regret. Hold loved ones tightly. Love who you love. Make memories to last a life time. Laugh. But most of all be unapologetically you! Always! ❤️

Not for me this one, I was looking for something a little lighter to read, lighter is what I got! Just a very vapid tale about a shallow bunch of people. I didn't like either of the central characters, they had nothing interesting to say. Life, loss, regret - maybe so but these characters are so one dimensional nothing has any deep meaning or emotional content that truly hits. At times I found the narrative to be somewhat juvenile, ultimately just horribly superficial trying to be meaningful. No plot surprises at all just cliches.

I'm struggling to find great writing. The kind you find in Tolstoy or Tolkien. They might be a bit hard to read since they require patience to get to more action, but one never tires of the language, not even after having read a thousand pages.
Starting to read this book though, the writing makes it clear, it's one of those "hip and easy" books for women. There are a couple of deeper insights into relationships and a bit of an unexpected twist at the end, but it's hard to care for yet another hollywood story, even more so for a fictional one.
The only reason I kept on reading to the end is because the book was chosen for our book club.

This started out strongly and I was quickly engrossed finding it hard to put down. Then somewhere around the middle or maybe two-thirds in I found myself getting very weary of Celia's shenanigans - a somewhat whiny, annoying character that was never much more than two-dimensional at best. Thereafter the story felt a little phoned-in and the only thing that kept me going was the final reveal. What was Evelyn Hugo's connection to her biographer Monique?

Before this I read Daisy Jones & the Six - a five star read for so many reasons - so it was a little disappointing to find this wasn't as good though many of the ingredients were there. Just too many scenes or moments glossed over. If she'd cut out at least 2 husbands she might have given herself more time to develop the story with more depth.

I will read her again but this could have been a better novel. Highly recommend Daisy Jones & the Six though.

Bought for 99p, this was a quick and easy read. Like ‘Daisy Jones and the six’ this was a book that tapped into all the cliches about celebrities and their lifestyles. Sadly no character in this book is developed fully, so it’s hard to have any emotional tie to them. So many main characters died, but I just felt that these were plot devices. The ‘shock’ value is supposed to be Evelyn’s sexuality, but what is shocking about that in 2021? The writer skimmed over the sexual and physical abuse of woman in the film industry, which is strange considering the #Metoo agenda of the last couple of years. And the use of a bi-racial character was also a lazy plot device, and not one that a white writer should be using.

I think its been over hyped. I read it because it was recomended and highly praised in a book group im in. I struggle to see why though now that i've read it. Perphaps because of its coverage on race and sexuality it appealed to a higher mass of people, however i just dont think there seems to be enough of a story line to keep it engaging. It started off with potential but by husband number 4 it just became abit bland. There was barely any character development, i couldnt warm up to any of them really. To be brutal, it felt like the book lead up to nothing and i'd have been no worst or better off finishing it. So in all it was just a so/so book. Not the worst but definitely not page turning in my opinion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good read. Less husbands and more of the forbidden love would have created a better story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 August 2021

It is a story of Evelyn, who was once a famous Hollywood actress, now a recluse and her seven husbands and forbidden love. Evelyn selects the unlikely reporter Monique, young and relatively inexperienced to tell her life story. There is only one condition, the story is only told after her death.

Evelyn is unlikable and by the end of the book you will like her even less, as the decisions she makes through her life, her ruthlessness, ambition and her actions are all laid bare.

I didn't really engage with the book and thought the story should have been about a forbidden love not the seven husbands. Most of the husbands didn't add much to the story or to Evelyn's life. The unforbidden love was the strongest element to the book so the title is a bit misleading. I would have preferred fewer husbands and a stronger storyline around fewer men, including the one that was the love of her life

Like other reviewers I was initially drawn in and the premise of the book is good. Unfortunately it sort of ran out of steam around the middle. This is a book group choice so I persevered but I just wasn't convinced by some of the lead characters and found it hard to empathise with Evelyn or her family, and I found Celia irritating. There is a neat twist at the end which I didn't see coming hence the 3 stars.

I expected a lot more from this book, the ending was good but I didn’t get attached to any of the characters. The love story between Evelyn and Celia didn’t feel believable. There could have been a lot less husbands and about 80 pages less to make it better. Pointless inclusion of Connor being in a threesome, felt that was put in to try and make the book better than it was. I think it was popular on TikTok due to the LGBTQ+ community vs the actual book & writing

3.0 out of 5 stars It’s a good story but it could be better written

There are 2 voices in this tale of a Hollywood star; the young journalist and the ageing star. There is barely any difference in these two voices. I would imagine the 90 yr old with a language, demeanour, etiquette of her time. Likewise the journalist. But no they are the same . It’s a pity . If we have only words , no pictures, then the words need to work harder.

I finished the book a few days ago but just saw the prompt to write a review. It didn’t how the title, I just saw the authors name and I had no clue what book I had just read. Nothing of the story had stayed in my brain. So that’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the book. I did have a fun time reading it. But I don’t care about the story or any of the characters. Its fun but nothing more

It was a good and very quick read.
At first I did not like Monique- she seemed so immature and annoying. The more into story - I was focusing on Evelyn’s memories. Although sometimes the narrative felt somewhat shallow? Like using all the predictable moves just to make a point: like amazing love with husband that turns out to be a woman boxer, best friend that turns out to be gay.. and the main character- she obviously had to have some personal problem with a man (as the action continues we know that she is getting divorced- but in fact she never ever truly loved her husband - and of course history told by Evelyn - opens her eyes..
so do not expect too much...
