Wow! Where do I start with this book! I enjoyed EVERY. SINGLE. WORD! It was hard to put down and when I did I couldn’t wait to pick it back up again!

An historical love story with a bisexual narrator, a famous old Hollywood actress, and all of her seven marriages. It tells the story of Evelyn, who wants to be famous, who learns early on in life that to get what she wants she has to play the part in every sense of the word. Now in her seventies Evelyn wants to share her life story with journalist Monique who has been personally picked by Evelyn. A tell all memoir about her life and her rise to fame. The glitz and glam of old Hollywood, the manipulation, the scandal, Hollywood cover ups, having to conform to society norms of the time and what it meant to be gay/bisexual during that time period.

It felt like non fiction. Like I was reading about Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor. Everything was so detailed. All the characters felt so real. Evelyn is flawed, ambitious and strong. A completely unapologetic character, manipulative and selfish who I loved! There are times she will frustrate you as a reader, but she is compelling and unforgettable! And with each husband she captivated me more with her spell.

The real reason for Evelyn picking Monique is intriguing and kept me hooked in the present day story telling. Evelyn’s rollercoaster life flows chronologically over the years and covers topics such as LGBTQ+ rights, diversity, female empowerment, sexuality, found family, motherhood and love. It is as much a story about Evelyn as it is about Harry and Celia’s life too. These two characters completely had my heart. I went on as much of an emotional journey with them as I did with Evelyn.

Taylor Jenkins Reid is without a doubt, a fantastic story teller. The way she writes her characters and their lives is addictive and very special.

Enough of my gushing. Remember. Life is short. Life is precious. Live life without regret. Hold loved ones tightly. Love who you love. Make memories to last a life time. Laugh. But most of all be unapologetically you! Always! ❤️

Not for me this one, I was looking for something a little lighter to read, lighter is what I got! Just a very vapid tale about a shallow bunch of people. I didn't like either of the central characters, they had nothing interesting to say. Life, loss, regret - maybe so but these characters are so one dimensional nothing has any deep meaning or emotional content that truly hits. At times I found the narrative to be somewhat juvenile, ultimately just horribly superficial trying to be meaningful. No plot surprises at all just cliches.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing.

After all the hype, I found this book flat and colourless and painfully dull. There isn't an authentic voice with which you can empathise and as someone else has mentioned, all the people mentioned are imaginary, not real actors who have made real films. If anyone wants to know what Hollywood was really like in its heyday, they should read a book, even a ghosted one, by a real actor, or someone who was there. It's all so colourless and so many opportunities have been missed. The gay issues and the race issues are written with no passion whatsoever- just a bit of 'shame about that' sort of stuff, and passed over as painlessly as possible. It's a pity - so much potential wasted. Seems to have worked for some readers, but not for me.

Although this has a huge buzz around it on social media it really didn't live up to the hype for me. The characters are largely unlikeable and one-dimensional, it feels like the author has thrown a mismatch of thinly veiled snapshots of the personal lives of various golden age of Hollywood stars together, and as this spans various decades there is very little to distinguish between the various time periods covered (I had to keep checking if we'd moved on from the late 50's - was this the 70's or 80's - there was no discernable way to tell). This is light and frothy but ultimately disappointing.

When the description said it was full of ‘old Hollywood glamour’ I was really looking forward to reading this. Instead it was just the typical ‘I’ll do anything to make it big in Hollywood because I come from a poor family’….it was pretty dull, and pretty predictable.

It’s a bit of a waste of time I think...badly written and very predictable. Not much to it. Read it if you need something mindless. I wouldn’t recommend it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Overhyped

What a waste of time this book was. i bought it due to seeing some rave reviews, cannot understand the gushing reviews some people are giving this. I decided to carry on reading simply to try and find out what all the hype was for and what the supposed great twist was - what a mistake. The book started well enough, however as it progressed the poor characterisation, and the basic and rather clichéd writing style grated on me. Just became tedious after a while.

This was the first book I’ve read from Taylor Jenkins Reid.
I Cannot fault her writing, the storyline, the plot twist but I just don’t think this book was for me.
If it wasn’t for the paper clippings in the book think I would’ve just bored of reading it, nothing in the storyline gripped me to reading more.

Evelyn Hugo is the perfect mix of hero & villain, she unapologetically her in later life.. If you love the idea of being transported into the golden age of cinema, this book does just that. You live Evelyn's life, you feel each high and low. Touched on LGBTQ+, race and a lot more important topics.

This was not what I was expecting. The writing and storytelling was good and kept me reading to the end but turned out to be a preachy propaganda piece for a certain agenda. If I had known that I would not have purchased the book. If you are a conservative reader, pass this one up.

2.0 out of 5 stars It’s not a heterosexual love story FYI

First of all, I’ll just say this is a gay love story. I had no idea so I was expecting something else.
Also, I really didn’t like the main character at all. I thought she was a terrible person and it’s really hard to like a book when you don’t like the main character. So.. yeah. If you like a selfish main character and a gay storyline (that in my opinion isn’t written believably) then sure. Read this book lol. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I could not wait to get it over with and start the next book. I could have just given up but too bad I was already halfway through expecting it to get better so I had to finish it but by the last third or so, it was merely blah blah blah to me. The idea was good but it was just too poorly written.

As of the quality of the product, a huge barcode sticker splodged on the back covering a quarter of the page it was quite unpleasant.
