How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsGreat for adults too
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 October 2021
I ordered the Paperwhite Kids as its the same device as the adult version, but comes with a longer 2 year warranty and a free cover. I had to set up a kids profile initially during setup, but I was able to delete that in settings and it now functions as a normal paperwhite as far as I can tell, nothing childish about it! I've even sideloaded a few ebooks just to see if it would work and all OK.

Re the device itself, I'm loving it so far. Screen much better than my original / ancient paperwhite and more responsive. Happy customer.

1.0 out of 5 starsBackward step, and very poor value
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 February 2022
I bought a Barnes & Noble Nook back in 2013 (!!), for £29. This Paperwhite (or should I say paperweight!) cost over £100 for a slightly bigger screen and slightly brighter. But the interface is absolutely terrible and all over the place. The collections interaction is almost non-existent, and book manipulation on the Amazon Kindle page is like it was written by a teenager on his first computer class. And don't get me started on the PC Kindle App.
Amazon, you need professional developers to write the software, clearly no investment in this product. Considering the amount of profit Amazon must be making on these (compared to the superior Nook), maybe Jeff Bezos should spend less money on rockets, and more on Amazon products. Battery life is looking pretty dodgy too compared to the Nook which is still going strong after 9 years. Think I'll go back to the Nook, and return the Paperwhite..

4.0 out of 5 stars Great BUT
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 November 2021

Really like this for my children, the only thing is the kids version isn't organised would be good for it to have a my library like the adults version, and be able to separate audiobooks and books in different folders in the library and to have everything in alphabetical order. This might not be a problem for most children but for mine it's a slight issue

1.0 out of 5 stars Slow, poor screen quality and the books subscription has been misrepresented
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 December 2021
Colour: Robot DreamsVerified Purchase
The device is too slow, the screen quality is too poor to even see books details and the subscription includes almost no books for a slightly older child. The customer care assistant said he would send "feedback" to the tech team that the descirpiton incorrectly stated how many books are actually included. A joke. Will be filing a formal complaint and will be seeking to return this device.

3.0 out of 5 stars disappointed about lack of parental controls
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 January 2022
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
When ordering, I had thought that we would be able to set a bed time, ie that it would turn off at a particular time, without us having to be there at lights out time and then take away the Kindle to prevent all night reading.... I see the description now says this feature is "coming soon".... not soon enough for my liking!! The good thing is that it has completely got my 10 year old daughter back into reading - she LOVES the Kindle, though this was not something she asked for or wanted; the bad thing is that she is literally reading all night unless we take the damn thing off her!! When are the parental controls going to include this feature please??
Also slightly disappointed about the policy of having the first in a series included in the sub, but not the remainder of the series, so we've already had to buy 4 more books to complete a set she started. For us the main thing is that she's finding books she wants to read, but other parents might want to bear in mind that having the Kindle with the sub doesn't mean that you won't still have to spend money on books as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent upgrade
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 December 2021
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
I traded in my 5 years old Kindle for the new one. What a difference - bigger screen, easier to read, more responsive, faster page turns... I can go on. The only blip is it feels slightly heavier but not uncomfortably so.

Plus the trade in discount and credit, combined with a sale, made the upgrade financially palatable.

And yes - I bought the Kids version but disabled that feature immediately from the Settings menu. For a little bit more, it comes with a cover, no ads and extended warranty. No brainer really.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fab upgrade, kids package good value
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 February 2022
Colour: Emerald ForestVerified Purchase
From my old (2014?) Paperwhite this is a great upgrade. Setup a doddle if new or a previous kindle user.
The screen: bigger but not unwieldy. Side my side with 2018 kindle much prefer the slightly bigger screen and smaller bezels. A higher resolution than my old one just makes everything a bit sharper at smaller font size.
The warm light is something I didn't think I would care about but much nicer than the normal white light: you can adjust on a gradient to your preference.
Page turns nice and quick, everything much smoother.

Kids:
It is just a paperwhite that comes with a case, 2 year warranty and no ads for maybe a tenner extra looking at the RRP. This is excellent value.
It prompts to create a kids profile and subscribe to the year free trial of kids+ which can be unsubscribed later and still have access to the rest of the year. You CAN exit the kids profile once made and use as a normal kindle with access to your full library.
The case is really nice which comes preinstalled - wish they sold these separately vs the tactile fabric ones. This is more of a soft touch pvc type material and like the colourful designs (you could always go with black.. but why?)

If you're on the fence and can afford it then buy now! Moreso if there's a deal on or can benefit from the kindle trade in offer.

5.0 out of 5 stars So glad I made this purchase
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 April 2022
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
I had owned a 5th generation (I think) for many many years and never used it. I'd always much preferred reading physical books, and actually looked down on those using Kindles. However, for the last few years of nomdic living whilst trying to read physical books has proved difficult. I throw away several £100s of books each year as I get through a book every couple of weeks. Something needed to be done. And I turned to my old Kindle. For some reason I was unable to turn back a page as both back page buttons were not working. So I decided it was time to get a new Kindle and a new outlook.

I was sooo glad I did. After reading several reviews it was clear that I could just buy a kid's Kindle and turn it into an 'adult' one with a few clicks, and save myself £££ in the process and get a bunch of benefits too. So I did just that.

I love my Kindle! I can now read under the covers, and take store many books and other PDFs on my Kindle. I read it all the time, and the battery life is great! I can go several weeks between charges. I can adjust the light (manually) to increase the brightness and warmth which is great. I can easily access my books and it feels just like I am reading an actual book. No longer do I have to read at odd angles to make sure I catch the light, and ache from holding open thick books. I don't have to worry about space in my rucksack when flying from transporting books around when just using carry on luggage. I am so happy. My only gripe is how sensitive the touch screen is and constantly find I've flipped pages by accident.

5.0 out of 5 stars The iPod of E-Book Readers at Its Pinnacle
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 July 2022
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
Upgrading from an OG 2012 Paperwhite (5th-Gen), this was a night and day difference in terms of responsiveness, display quality and ease of setup. I also took advantage of the trade-in scheme, getting £20 for my old one (not bad compared to eBay and Facebook Marketplace prices) plus 20% off any new Kindle. For me, this translated to a £50 saving. When my last one cost £120, that's an amazing return after a decade and you even get the trade-in goodies before sending your old unit in. VERY cool.

If you have an Amazon device already and tick the option to link it to your account at purchase, then it already has your account and even your home Wi-Fi details saved (if you have an Amazon device on your Wi-Fi already). This makes set-up *so* quick and easy. Just turn it on, go through two screens and you're away.

The display is incredible, and puts my OG Paperwhite's to shame. Many displays are intimidated by outdoor use, but the Kindle's e-ink display literally laughs in the face of our nearest star and enables you to use it at 0 brightness - just like a book. At night, the warm light feature is genuinely much easier on the eyes, plus you can automate the start/end time and its intensity, so that it's a case of 'set and forget' if you read in an unlit bedroom at night but in somewhere much brighter during the day.

Battery life shames even a Nokia 3310, lasting around 10 weeks; I've not had it long enough to test this, but it drops around 3% every 24 hours even with Wi-Fi left on. The USB-C port means charging it is a bit like owning an iPhone or a Nokia circa 1999-2009 - you won't struggle to find a cable or plug knocking about.

I bought the Kids edition as it comes with a case (a really nice black one, actually - the quality surprised me) and a 2-year 'worry-free' warranty that seems to cover accidental damage. And no adverts. All for the price of the regular Paperwhite. It works *exactly* the same as the main Paperwhite, and you can even get the 3 months of free Kindle Unlimited anyway if you're a Prime customer. This in addition to the one year of Amazon Kids that you get, and can use if you want.

There is a cheaper Kindle but, for me, the warm light and included extras make this one a very easy pick over the base model unless your funds are particularly tight.

This is, I think, the decisive model as I cannot fathom why you'd pay for Qi wireless charging and an ambient light sensor in the form of the Paperwhite Signature Edition. I turn my iPhone and iPads' ambient light sensors off as I prefer the control, but I suppose if you read in many different lighting environments it could be handy to have. Also, if you're an Audible fan and don't have a mobile phone/tablet to use the app on, the Signature does come with 32GB of storage which is better for audiobooks as they take up a lot of space. Regular eBooks won't touch the 8GB that most of the others come with, though, and if you do somehow fill it then you get free Amazon cloud storage built-in to store the extras that you're not currently reading.

TL;DR - If you like reading and want an e-reader, buy this one. You won't be disappointed. I don't even care about it not having buttons for page turning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back in love with reading
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 July 2022

I went through a real reading slump but something compelled me to pick up my Kindle 4th Gen this year and since have read over 30 books (which is a lot considering earlier said slump). Though I had no real complaints with my decade old Kindle (did the job, had page turning buttons, ok, battery life was going and had no built in backlight) I decided to keep an eye out on the Paperwhite for Prime Day. There was a few times I was tempted to get it earlier on when it was discounted but managed to hold out and I’m glad I did (£79.99 with a promo on top that I had).
I opted for the Kids version for a number of reasons, it comes with a case, 2 year warranty and Kids Unlimited. I’m using this as a standard regular Kindle and absolutely love it, I pick it up and it makes me smile. It took me a while to learn the new navigation (not having dedicated home or setting buttons) but the backlight is a must, displaying a clock, minutes remaining, % read, changing font and font size, warm light. All little things that I never missed because I never had.
The case is a better quality than I was expecting and feels nice to hold onto. The only thing I wish is for the cover to fold back on itself a little easier but I’m hoping that’ll come with use.
USBC charging port is a nice upgrade and one of the main selling points to me over the Oasis.
This has made my relationship with reading stronger and I hope it continues as there’s something special about being able to escape into a whole other world if only for 30 mins a day…(though usually much longer :))
