This could be looking at the skies to finding paw prints in the mud. Each double spread has a little explanation on what you are looking at and can do, then a series of tasks with points. The harder the task, the more points. The book is full colour and crammed with images.
These books are more difficult to undertake than the normal i-Spy books as some of the tasks will be hard to undertake unless you find the right location or have the correct set up. I still think that they work well over the summer holidays when you have a little more time on your hands as there are lots of fun ideas that you can choose and go out of your way to do.
The scoring system is broken down by just doing the activities and spotting things but there is an 'eco activity' points count too which are things that help the planet or wildlife. One of the first things I noted was that there's nowhere in the book to actually keep track of all the points for things that are ticked off - a simple space to put a tally in each activity or in the contents where there is a tick box would have been useful.
The biggest issue however is that glancing at a couple of activities, just seems unachievable and kids love to 'finish' a whole challenge - things like building a dam or seal watching may not be possible without traveling and might be a bit disappointing if we have to skip a section just because it can't be done where we are. That said, the points collection (not all are needed so it is do-able) can be used to send off for a certificate and badge from Collins, the publisher. It may explain the rather high £7.99 RRP price point for this type of book. Nonetheless the kids will enjoy it - our 4 and 7 year olds will love it and as adults we can get involved in their play too :)
Challenges range from building a bird feeder, to being an animal detective and trying to locate different species of bugs etc. how to make perfume from petals, how to build a compost bin and even how to build a butterfly feeding station. The tasks have been thought through carefully and this book makes a great tool for being outdoors with the little ones and keeping them engaged.

Not only are there small I spy games, but there are challenges such as find a feather and then turn it into a quill. Or build your own bird feeder!
This book is brilliant to get your kids outside in nature and give them a better understanding of it too. There are enough challenges that you could do one per weekend and keep everyone occupied for almost a full year!

The book is full of facts and information as well as beautiful pictures throughout. It really does give a purpose to children when going somewhere such as the around nature, in parks etc in this instance and they can score different things such as paw prints. I can give a focus to a long day where a child may become a little bored. There is a lot of writing though so I would probably recommend it for age 8 upwards
