Every time I read a book by Colleen I think it’s amazing. It takes me a long long time to get over it. This book had me crying laughing angry and so many other emotions. This book was epic. This book I will never get over. I loved it I’m sad it ended. I want to read more about them. Brilliant. I feel so emotional after reading it. It was fantastic. I won’t tell you anything, just please read it!

Needs a sprinkling of fairy dust

Once again Colleen Hoover delves deeply into matters of the heart with sensitivity and a keen understanding of the teenage psyche. Her characters are likeable, the writing style fluid and easy, and the story lopes along nicely. For me, though, this book doesn’t quite have the same emotional punch I’ve come to expect from this accomplished author.

For a start, the few twists were very thinly disguised; it was clear from early on exactly where the narrative was going. Now normally, I wouldn’t take exception to that, in the same way I don’t mind getting on a train and knowing its destination. But what makes any journey special is the scenery along the way. And with ‘Regretting You’, I just got the sense I’d seen it all before.

Yes, I was moved by the predicament of mum Morgan and teenage daughter Clara, whose lives are thrown into a tailspin when husband/dad Chris dies in a car crash alongside his sister-in-law Jenny. I think Hoover does a fine job of exploring their grief, anger and confusion. I liked Clara’s boyfriend Miller a lot and easily identified with the ‘first love’ theme. And I enjoyed the tension and poignancy in Morgan’s relationship with Jonah, Jenny’s partner.

For someone like me, though, who regularly blubs when reading, there should have been enough tugging of the heartstrings in this to see me through a whole box of tissues. On the contrary, not a single tear was shed. And not because it wasn’t an emotional story; it was, in spades. It was just all a little too formulaic.

While I can see why diehard fans would love this book regardless, I believe that many, if they’re honest, would admit, like me, to being a tad disappointed. And there’s the problem: when authors set a high bar, there are bound to be times when they don’t quite hit the mark. And this, unfortunately, is one of them

Suffice to say it wouldn’t be a Colleen Hoover book without a massive twist. I’ve read every book written and I. An honestly say I have not been disappointed by any of them.

This book in true Hoover style delivers the punch and leaves you reeling. Then in Hoover style she very cleverly and patiently puts you back together. Well defined characters and heartbreaking narrative. Broke my heart but loved it anyway.

I have mixed feelings about this story. I love many parts and the characters but I also can’t get over certain scenes or acts.
It’s beautiful and powerful as we’re used to from the author and it’s angsty and makes you think a lot of what would you do in those moments, the decisions that you’ve made would be the same? The feelings?

I am a big fan of Colleen Hoover stories. She is my favourite author. She is good at bringing versatile story lines with different genres and she nails it!! A big applause for the story 'Regretting you'. I loved all the emotional conversation between Clara and Morgan. It is beautiful and very real and I feel both the characters close to my heart. Being a mother I can understand all the decisions that Morgan makes inorder to protect her daughter from heartache. Thanks for giving such a wonderful story!

Lacking the punch of her best work

There’s no doubt Colleen Hoover is an excellent writer, but I’m coming to realise that the first two books of hers that I read - It Ends With Us and Verity - are just in a different league to the rest.

This one was similar to All Your Perfects in that I enjoyed reading it and I liked the characters but it lacked punch and was a bit too sickly sweet. There was no huge twist which I kept expecting (the front cover had me attaching significance to something which didn’t go anywhere at all), and the plot was predictable. Some difficult themes are explored but it all just felt a bit limp. The large focus on teen romance didn’t help, as it gave the book a very YA feel.

Regretting You is a romance after all and it does okay in that respect - I just think CoHo has set her own bar so high that there are bound to be disappointments, and this unfortunately is one of them.

What a truly emotional roller coaster of a book. So much love, trust, hate, lies, deceit, relationships in turmoil and so much more. In many ways this may be classed as an alternative romantic novel, but again could be described as a hormonal interlude between generations who find it increasingly difficult to communicate, tell the truth or even possibly be in martyrs mode. We have four exceptional character, Clara the daughter, Morgan the mother , Jonah the father of Elijah, and Miller the film maker. However the story whirls around Jenny and Chris and the way they influence the ones they have loved. It is a fascinating angle. In places it is so emotionally charged. I defy anyone to truly second guess all the fascists. As ever and excellent story by and exceptional author.
