5.0 out of 5 starsAnother brilliant book from Joy Ellis!

This is book 5 in the series - but there would be no problem reading it as a standalone.... if you have never read any Joy Ellis - you have a massive treat in store!
This book was fabulous - a gripping read and I didn't want it to end.
There were several plotlines running through it, but as always, Joy crafts these so expertly that all the interweaving was perfectly clear.
A great book - completely recommended! I've just bought another copy for my Mum!

2.0 out of 5 starsVery slow and Boring
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 July 2022
I used to wait in anticipation for Joy Ellis books but I found this one really slow and boring.
In fact when I got a quarter of the way through I started skipping chapters. Not something I would normally do.
I The I will leave Matt Ballard to his retirement!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping story

I have been a huge fan of Joy’s work for a while now. I haven’t quite caught up with everything that she has written to date but that is something I hope to rectify in the near future. ‘Trick Of The Night’ is the fifth book in the series featuring ex-Detective Matt Ballard and it’s a cracker of a read, which I thoroughly enjoyed but more about that in a bit.
It didn’t take me long at all to get into ‘Trick Of The Night’. In fact seeing Joy’s name on the cover of a book that I hadn’t read yet was enough to grab my attention and the story within the covers of the book sealed the deal as it were. To say that reading ‘Trick Of The Night’ became addictive is a bit like saying that I like cake- in other words a huge understatement. I had picked the book up only intending to read a chapter or two but as with all of Joy’s books the intention flew out of the window and I was still sat there reading over a dozen chapters and an hour or two later. I found that I just couldn’t put the book down for any length of time. I mean the book wasn’t exactly glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. I couldn’t bear to miss a single second of the story. I had my own theory as to what was going to happen so I had to keep reading to see if I was anywhere near the truth. All too quickly I reached the end of ‘Trick Of The Night’. I found ‘Trick Of The Night’ to be the true definition of an unputdownable, page turner of story. This story was gritty, gripping tense and dramatic.
‘Trick Of The Night’ is superbly written but then that’s true of all of Joy’s books that I have had the pleasure of reading and reviewing. What I love about Joy’s books is the fact that you are immediately drawn into the story as soon as you start reading. Once the story has you in its grip then it doesn’t release you until the moment you read the very last word on the last page. For me, the story hit the ground running and maintained a fast pace throughout. Reading ‘Trick Of The Night’ felt like being on a scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with more twists and turns to the story than you would find on a ‘Snakes & Ladders’ board. Just when you thought that you could take a minute to catch your breath and gather your thoughts then off the action would go again. The series featuring ex- Detective Matt Ballard goes from strength to strength and just gets better and better.
In short I thoroughly enjoyed every single minute of ‘Trick Of The Night’ and I would wholeheartedly recommend the book to other readers. I will definitely be reading more of Joy’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

Book 5 in the Matt Ballard series and I think this is the best one so far. A student photographer takes his best pictures ever but is puzzled to see a face in the window of a deserted building. He takes his friend to look at the building and days later they are both dead. The police are convinced it was accidental, due to carbon monoxide poisoning but one of the mothers of the boys dos not believe it and hires Matt and Liz to investigate. At the same time a young boy disappears with his grandmother, it seems unlikely but the cases could be connected. I really enjoyed this book and it kept me gripped from beginning to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another tricky case for Matt and Liz

This was yet another winning story from Joy Ellis. The plot was highly sophisticated and thrilling. The combination of three cases gradually transitioning to two and then finally one, was both complicated and inspiring. As we come to expect from this author, the characters are well created, and the plot was both challenging and interesting. These are the books that I love to read – keep you involved right into the night with a story that you just find it hard to drag yourself away from. As the cases continue to mount for this pair, I am hoping there will be more to come.

What can I say other than an excellently written and well thought out story. Nice complex plot to keep you guessing and plenty of twists. Introduction of new character who I foresee featuring in future books in this series. I really love all this author’s work, and for me this rates with her best. Best advice is get a copy and read it. You will not be disappointed I am sure.

Well Joy Ellis has done it again with another brilliant book. This super page turner grabs you from the first paragraph. Two students stumble upon something they shouldn't. Then the crime thriller really starts. Matt and Liz have their nephew come to stay in hope of cheering him up. He then gets involved in helping them with the mystery, not only is there murder, but a young boy goes missing with his batty aunt, where does this all lead? Read and enjoy. Now we all have to wait for the next book. Please write faster Joy Ellis.

Well written, a many facetted tale which starts with a picture taken by a talented young photographer, which results in the death of him and his companion.

Those investigating the crime find a convoluted trail, which ultimately leads them to a local criminal set up where drugs are involved.

A very good read.

Retired DCI Matt Ballard and retired DS Liz Haynes are partners in life as well as in their own detective agency. When two students die from carbon monoxide poisoning, the mother of one of them comes to ask Matt and Liz to investigate, as she does not believe that the deaths were accidental. Totally gripping throughout.

Absolutely brilliant. I have read all Joy Ellis's books and for me this is the very best. A missing boy, an underworld in turmoil, "accidental deaths", and ex police turned private investigators all intertwined to give a pacy and enthralling read. An absolute must for all crime reading fans. A rare 5 stars from me

I really thought the complex story mixing two problems into a nice exciting detective story was different from the run of the mill detective story.
