I have waited sometime for the latest Jefferson Tayte instalment and have to say the wait was worthwhile. This book follows on from the previous titles, although personally I do not feel that you have to have read them to enjoy this book. However, if you haven’t read any of the other titles I can highly recommend them. You will understand just what makes Jefferson Tayte tick and understand the character fully, which believe me is well worth knowing, from his fear of flying to his obsession with Hershey Chocolate and cream linen suits which he seams to be able to ruin with incredible ease.

As always the scene is set in the first few pages and never fails to please. This time JT as he is affectionately known is investigating his own family history and as always he manages to get himself into some very tight scrapes as he travels along the road to discovery. The book time-shifts between the modern day and the 2nd World War, moving effortlessly between the two. JT has been given some documents by his mentor which have given him some clues to his own family history and lead him to travel to Germany where he discovers some deeply hidden secrets. He is accompanied by his partner Professor Jean Summer and they are left in no uncertain doubt that they should return to London and not continue to investigate the organisation and individuals they are trying to discover, as some people will go to incredible lengths to keep secrets that have been hidden for decades, regardless of the atrocities that are being kept undiscovered.

The final few chapters are incredibly tense and I found myself constantly saying just one more chapter and then I will put the book down, but invariably this doesn’t happen and you keep going, which to me is the sign of a really good read. Once I have finished reading a Steve Robinson book I feel as if I have been on the journey with JT and I am exhausted.

I cannot wait for the next book and would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good genealogical mystery, you will not be disappointed.

2.0 out of 5 starsAn unsuccessful attempt at "reality"

I'd previously enjoyed the other JT novels and feel the author should have stuck to his successful tried and tested formula. The plotline of this book and the psychological examination of good and evil in the main characters might have worked had it been set in a distant historical context, but the fusion of his usual entertaining fictitious fantasy with the grim horrors of far more recent history just hasn't succeeded.I skipped page after page of battle details. There are far better sources of analysis of the Second World War and the inclusion of this sort of material in an otherwise lightweight novel was a serious misjudgement.

I really enjoy reading Steve Robinson’s Jefferson Tayte series because I find them so interesting. Family history is a fascinating subject and when you mix that with crime drama and intrigue it certainly makes a book hard to put down. All the way through, the subject of Tayte’s own family history has been a sub-text to all the cases he takes on and we are reminded frequently that he would love to be able to find his parents if only he had the time and some leads to get him started. Well in Kindred this is exactly where we are taken from the start and finally he gets the answers he was looking for, whether he wants them or not and with a great deal of excitement, danger and heroics along the way. The search takes Tayte and Jean to Nazi Germany at the height of World War II as we journey through an old soldiers tales of his life in the Hitler Youth, how he became best friends with the boy who went onto become one of the war’s biggest criminals, and the love of his life who he married and then most distressingly lost just after managing to survive the war. The style of moving from the 1940’s back to the present time was a brilliant way to tell the story, and it added to the suspense as the story progressed.

I have to say that I found this was the best one so far in what is certainly an excellent series. The only question I have to ask is, now that his search is complete, where will Tayte’s further cases lead him.

Another super story from this author. I love this series and a friend of mine is enjoying it too after I told her about it. She actually beat me to reading this instalment !!
I've only marked it down the one star because, as with the last story, I got a little bogged down a couple of times with the more descriptive "stuff"....like this-"The Leibstandarte, as part of Army Group South under Feldmarschall Gerd Von Runstedt, had smashed through the Stalin Line at Mirupol, heading towards Zhitomir"......phew !! I tend to glaze over at passages like this. However, this passage I think is lovely-"They simply wanted to be husband and wife, so that it could be recorded for all time they they had once loved each other".
I WAS fascinated to read of the Nachthexen pilots. I looked them up after I finished. I'd never heard of them before so you get an education courtesy of Mr Robinson, too.
Many of the chapters darting back 'n' forth in time ended on massive cliffhangers which keeps you reading as you know that the ensuing chapter will tend to be in the differing timeframe so to reach the portion you need to get to you end up reading more than you'd planned. Very cleverly done.
It was terrific to finally reach the ending in some part of JT's own personal quest to learn of his own ancestors. It's left so much more open which is rather splendid, as does the very last little cliffhanger thrown in right at the death !!
I only spotted a couple of mistakes. The odd missed word and apostrophe mistake so that's impressive as well. I saw on Twitter this week that book 6 is imminent so that will be in my collection as soon as I can afford to get it.

In this 5th outing of the Jefferson Tayte Genealogical Mysteries, we finally learn the true story behind JT's own family history. As a keen genealogist myself, I fell in love with these books from the start and 'Kindred' does not disappoint.

Fast paced and moving seamlessly between the present day and World War 2 Germany, this is the best one yet! Full of the twists and turns we have come to expect, but also incredibly moving at times. My heart was in my mouth as the book gathered pace to reach its thrilling conclusion, and I read long into the night as I just couldn't bring myself to put it down until the final page had been turned.

Jefferson Tayte is a warm, funny, lovable character, who you can't help but like. His research has a habit of getting him into all sorts of trouble, but I wouldn't have him any other way! If only my own genealogical research could be as interesting - but maybe not quite as dangerous!

Highly recommended. Steve Robinson is a gifted storyteller and I hope it isn't too long until we see more of the wonderful Jefferson Tayte. A thrilling 5 stars.

Outstanding. For a short while (very short) I thought it was going to be a bit slow. But soon the momentum picked up and I connected with the characters and found myself getting to know them, caring about them and wanting to know what happened to them. For the last 3/4 of the book I couldn’t put it down and completed it in one sitting!

This is the fifth of the Jefferson Tayte stories and is a pivotal section of his tale in which against all the odds he gets to the bottom of his life story. J.T. has to retreat from many blind alleys and unravel many lies in this tale. Often all is not what it seems to be. For me the big reveal was unexpected and there are some new threads available which I believe will be taken into future stories. Really great tale!

I have to be totally honest and say that my heart sank a little when I learnt that this long awaited for book involved a Holocaust story line. It was too uncomfortable and too close to home as my Nan had lost most of her family to this horror.

This was a hard book for me to read at the start as I wasn't too sure what I was going to come across. What I did come across was a well written and very well planned book with a central character, that I have come to know well and love, finally getting the answers he has craved for for most of his life.

The story weaves a magical journey towards it's surprising ending. Several times I was driven on by the very clever cliff hangers at the end of each chapter. There is considerable skill in driving the reader on in the way this book did. Once I had gotten half way I could not stop until I had reached it's end.

There must have been a substantial amount of time invested into the historical research for a story such as this and it takes a very brave author to touch on storylines that still shock and ore the world today. They were however handled with great compassion for all the people involved. Many different angles and perspectives were given that make you reflect on how the war affected all people in many ways.

Again the story remained true to it genealogical roots and gave an interesting insight to records in Germany.

Well done Steve on another gripping story. When is the next instalment? So many questions!

Well paced compelling story telling. Robinson eyes in quite a filmic style, with lots of flashbacks (thankfully clearly flagged, so you always know what decade you're in).
Sometimes the prose can get a tiny bit bogged down in explanation of a genealogical detail, and I sometimes wonder whether that detail about e.g. record types might be better dealt with in a footnote, or maybe an appendix, where more explanation of the genealogical processes, specifically when as detailed and unfamiliar to me at least as in this book.

But the story I think works well whether your interested in the general side or not.

I could easily see the Jefferson Tayte novels made into a TV series.

At some point in all readers lives an author comes along who's work goes straight to the top of your reading list , and each and every book they bring out you enjoy from the first word to the last, Steve Robinson is one of these authors for me. When I open a new novels by Steve Robinson I know I am in for a wonderful read, well more like a wonderful adventure. Kindred is the fifth outing for JT and I agree with the other reviews I have read in saying that this is his best to date, and I have loved all the books. This time it's JT's family history that is the main story line and the road he takes to find out where he came from is full of twists, turns and fraught with danger. I feel that I know JT now and am happy to see that he now comes complete with partner, professor Jean Summer. It's nice for him to have someone on his side instead of him being the rather lonely quiet man that we have seen over the course of the previous 4 books. The story is a nice mix of laughter, friendship, companionship, danger and some answers that JT has looked for most of his life. If you haven't bought Kindred yet then buy it now, it's certainly a novel that draws you into it on the first page and carries you right through till the last in fine style. My only complaint ? Is that now I have got to wait till book 6 comes out, mind you I shall go back and read them all again, ( and there aren't many books I will read twice) they really are that good !

This is the fifth book I've read covering the genealogical investigations of Jefferson Tayte and once again it didn't fail to amaze me. Once again supported by his new found lady friend Jean, JT in searching to find his own family roots uncovers more than he bargained for. His earlier searches lead him to Munich and during the course of his efforts to find his origins, comes across some very strange and evil people along with some terrible events from the second world war.
Obviously due to the nature of his work, JT's investigations tend to lead him into similar situations and confrontations with similar dubious characters, however the storylines differ greatly from book to book.
I recommend this series of books by Steve Robinson.

Like many of Steve Robinson's readers I had been eagerly anticipating this fifth instalment in the Jefferson Tayte series. I'm delighted to say that (as expected) I was not disappointed. In some ways this book had more riding on it than the previous ones in the series, as we knew that the adopted JT was finally going to find the answers he was looking for concerning his own ancestry. This wasn't just an interesting and exciting story of a man doing his job. This was us following a character we have come to know and love, finding out where he came from.

The story was gripping, interesting, exciting, tense, and, of course, full of twists and turns. As we neared the end, I myself was no nearer being sure of how everything was going to unravel. Steve Robinson has done a marvellous job of putting together a completely different and unexpected tale, presenting his readers with a story unlike anything I've ever read before.

I don't want to say more for risk of giving anything away, but I'm pleased that JT finally has his answers. Where will he go next? I'm now looking forward to his next genealogical adventure.
