5.0 out of 5 starsOnce upon a time.......
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 April 2010
Once upon a time in Whitechapel, London, there was a beautiful girl and a handsome boy. They were young and in love. Poor but optimistic.

So begins this wonderful story about Fiona and Joe. It takes us from London's poor East End in the 1880'es to Convent Garden's markets and West End's upper class neighbourhoods. Further on to New York and a whole new world of immigrants seeking their fortune in the bright new world.

A rich and satisfying novel where nothing seems impossible. Where sorrow and unhappiness instigate hard work and the fulfilling of seemingly unattainable dreams.

Are there too many convenient co-insidences? Too unrealistic developments? A poor daugther of an Irish dock worker building an American business empire? Perhaps. But isn't life full of co-insideces, of choices, of unexpected twists and turns suddenly changing everything...

A fairytale for adults. Engaging, absorbing and heartwarming. The kind of book which makes one wish it would never stop. I have ordered the sequel "The White Rose". The third book in the trilogy will be released in September.

Enjoy!

3.0 out of 5 starsDisappointing historical adventure
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 October 2016
I have very mixed feelings about this book. After reading The Gathering Light I had great expectations of The Tea Rose but sadly it is not a novel of quality, merely a good yarn. Starting in 1888 the story moves from Whitechapel, London to New York. Heroine Fiona Finnegan, a poor worker in a tea factory experiences one tragedy after another until the dastardly villain causes her to run away to America. Believing she has been abandoned by her sweetheart, Joe, she teams up with kind, ineffectual aristocrat, Nick, and gradually moves from rags to riches.

I was very concerned by the vocabulary. No-one in London or New York would talk constantly of, “going to the Loo,” in the 1880s and “going for a date” and “brainstorm” were not words of that time either. There are many convenient happenchances and the murders of Jack the Ripper are included to tempt readers to pick up the book, but Jennifer Donnolly is at her best when using her own imagination to create an amazing twist in the plot. It is for this reason that I carried on reading to the end, though the melodramatic conclusion wasn’t really necessary.

So if you can suspend your disbelief and lose yourself in a tale of good and evil with a strong heroine, without questioning historical accuracy, then this is an enjoyable tale, but I won’t be continuing with this trilogy.

Was recommended by a friend as an easy read and agree was right.
The characters are interesting and engaging but there are parts of the book that are frustrating in their predictability. Fundamentally is a boy meets girl, loses girl, finds girl story set against Victorian London and New York backdrop.
It is meticulous in it's detailed descriptions of the areas and about the tea business but some twists are so obvious you wish the author had been brave enough to leave out.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read from start to finish

During a few days of illness, a stomach bug, I lapped this book up. Finished in about 4 days, it was by my side as I tried to get myself better. A great find, I start The Winter Rose now, the Tea Rose full of action, full of so many entwined stories from Whitechapel to New York. Fiona the heroine, her loves, her life and losses. Maybe it gets a bit carried away, and maybe a bit dark with lots of death and destruction, but its still a must read. It reminds me that I have been so caught up finding different genres of novels, and searching for the good read, that I forgot I love nothing more than a good old yarn about rags to riches, please take a look, it will keep you occupied, especially as winter hasn't totally shaken itself off and this is a good accompaniment to a cup of fresh tea. The only one shortfall is that it had the smallest font ever.

So disappointed in this novel - most reviews are good and I thought it would be in the Lucinda Riley quality of good chicklit. I managed about a third of the book but gave up when I reached the ridiculous coincidence where she escapes London. Poorly written with odd vocabulary for the times with unbelievable one dimensional characters. I hate giving up on books but life is too short to read this one!

I really loved this - I had no idea it would be so exciting and so difficult to put down. Fiona is a dazzling character and Jennifer Donnelly not only constructs a pacy and gripping story but also demonstrates a really skillful abo;oty to create characters that you really care about. My only slight criticism is that it seemed a bit rushed and twee at the end of the New York section, but soon picked up pace again and had me frantically page turning in the last section again. The Tea Rose left me feeling a wave of emotions - it had me weeping, laughing and shouting out in places - what an exciting and powerful book.

This book is FANTSTIC!!!!!!! It s the best book I have ever read. The author writes in a style which makes you want to keep reading to see what happens to the characters next. The characters are intertwined and you cant guess what's going to happen next. I have read the three books in the series and they are definitely all worth reading. Wonderfully written, exciting, heart wrenching, romantic this book has it all.

Way off the beaten track for me but Im really looking forward to the other two books in this trilogy. There is one thing Jennifer Donnelly is really good at, and that is introducing new characters, just a line & I felt I had known that character my whole life, no confusion whatsoever. Lots of unexpected twists & turns, & very unique in parts, a really enjoyable read.

I was reccommended this book as I'd just finished reading all of Dilly Courts books and was looking for something similar - well I can honestly say I couldn't put this book down! Its a nice chunky book with lots of interesting twists. The characters are so vivid and you feel you really know them. There is romance, murder, poverty/hardship and triumph all rolled into one. The story just flows and I cant praise it enough. I've just ordered the 2nd installment "winter rose" and believe the author is in the throws of writing the 3rd. A book to snuggle up with - but be warned once started you will be hooked!

Fantastic storyline, Bought the next book in the trilogy and read it straight away. Looking forward to purchasing and reading the final book in the series. So sad that it will be the last in this excellent story. Someone should dramatise this for TV, you could easilly make 9 series out of this, ARE THERE ANY DRAMA PRODUCERS OUT THERE PAYING ATTENTION??????
