How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 stars92 helpful tricks to rule!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 June 2019
Pretty decent read in my opinion. The book contains over 300 pages with the writing being small so does take a fair amount of time to read it. Leil Lowndes delves into different aspects of conversation and how to present yourself in order to look in place. There's a lot of useful information covered such as how to be genuine when smiling at people and speaking the language of the addressee. I do believe that most of the 99 tricks come naturally to people and there's no need to consciously think about them. Having said that, not everyone is lucky to have things come to them naturally, so through practicing these techniques you can become someone who has a great level of social interaction.

Quite manipulative to be honest, indulged into it and found out that the shortcut of social relations is equivalent to perfecting the superficial facade in meeting acquaintances.

This yields a short term high in confidence and pride (after trials and errors in implementing them) but you can't get further than that in building any form of relationships(career, friendship, romance) that would last or even work in the long term.

Awful book, mostly aimed at business. Each point is accompanied by a far-fetched story about a friend. Maybe some insights, but I doubt it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs more context

There are a lot of good techniques in here that make a lot of sense and can be used straight away. Most are relatively short and easy to dip in and out of. I appreciate that the purpose of the book is most likely just that...a book of tips and tricks, but the book could be so much more if there was a little more context behind it. A lot of really good advice comes across as very superficial, with a focus on making yourself more likeable to the 'big players', rather than to improving and creating more meaningful relationships in general. The book is great as a reference for some handy hints and tips, but amongst all the references to glass ceilings and tigers, st times you feel like you're just learning ways to climb the corporate ladder and win the rat race, rather than connect with people in a more meaningful way and express yourself more effectively. It seemed to me that it was very easy to lose sight of why better relationships are important, and there was a strong focus on just trying to impress powerful people (for example if a CEO spills a drink over you it should be ignored and never mentioned but if a friend takes too long to write down an address given by an important client you shouldn't risk introducing them to any 'big players' again). The context and meaning behind the tricks are the glue that help them to flow together, and I think that there would be a lot of scope to include more detail on how to use these techniques to better connect with people and express yourself better.

This is a very American sales primer.
If you are in the USA,are on the make and put no value on self awareness, this book is for you and probably worth 4stars. (Big winner)
If you are European or are looking for support in initiating conversation this book probably not for you and worth zero stars.(little loser)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great tips for good communication

I've had this book in several forms - paperback and now kindle.

I gave the paperback away to a friend and never saw it again!

It's a good book, full of helpful ideas of how to communicate well with anyone. Incorporating these tips will mean that not only will you be better understood, but you will be better liked as a friend, family member and work colleague - even if people cannot actually work out what you're doing different.

The tips are given within a story about someone who has used the communication technique succcessfully, so you can learn how to apply the knowledge.

There are verbal and non-verbal (body language) tips in this book.

Highly recommended - it's a book I go back to regularly as you can just dip in and out.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good tips some places, with some odd ones crammed in

Overall the book does help give some practical advice. The tricky thing with books with social skills is that it's very situation dependent, so I do understand the difficulty with coming up with a great book.

The author started out strong, with some very insightful things to do. However, as the book progressed, there were a lot of odd tips. For instance, one of the tips were to never partake in teasing - this is an odd generalisation as in many cultures, this is a form of friendly joking that is acceptable. Or this gem from "Call a spade, a spade" chapter - "Big Cats are anatomically correct ... they'll say breasts when they mean breast".

Overall, a good read, but definitely take some tips with a large grain of salt

The last chapter wraps this up, use these kind of techniques repeatedly over time to build habit and hence your reputation and personal substance. Yes some of the tips are old fashioned, yes some are a bit cringe, but overall it drums home the notion that you need to be interested and attentive to friends and colleagues, being a worthwhile friend that has something to offer. I can definitely see the value in some of this for my career.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Dated

An book very much of its time (before Zoom, virtual events & Social Media) and as such large sections probably have dubious value (secretaries, phone conversations and meet & greets are pretty much consigned to history)

Much of the value comes from the first 20% of the book with most of the rest as filler which seems to contain a lot of redundancy.

It soon becomes a chore to read through the latest chapters.
