4.0 out of 5 starsI love the writing style and find the characters so easy ...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 November 2017
This is the 5th book in the Anna Travis series by author Lynda La Plante.
I am really enjoying this series and intend to read all the other books asap. I love the writing style and find the characters so easy to imagine and come to life in my head. If you intend to read any of these books I would strongly suggest that you read them in order as this will certainly make them far more enjoyable and all the sub plots will make a lot more sense.

In this offering a British film star Amanda Delany is found dead in her home, brutally murdered with multiple stabbings. Amanda Delaney was not one for a quiet life and when Anna Travis discovers the truth behind the public image of this successful actress she is shocked. There is a trail of lovers and potential murder suspects who have their own secrets to hide which makes life harder for Anna.
Anna's ex lover DCI James Langton is a hard task master and with Anna having promotion to Chief Inspector within her grasp she is eager to succeed.

Lynda La Plante's writing in this series is not rushed and allows the reader to fully understand the emotions and difficulties facing Anna Travis. This makes the characters stronger and more realistic, but I can see how other readers may feel the books need a good editing. In my case I am happy to read 500 page novels and with every book I read in this series I feel a better understanding and get fully emerged in the characters. Great books and wonderful characters.

3.0 out of 5 starsFar too American for my taste.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 March 2021
It was ok. However the storyline got a bit too bogged down with Travis's love life. Why she continues was hammer after the bully Langdon I don't understand. The really odd thing about this book was that it was written by an English author, about and English police force, in England and, allegedly, printed in UK but used American English throughout.... This was really annoying. Le Plants addressed her officers in American, rather than English. The police introduce themselves by their rank and surname, rather than 'dectective'.... not a title used in England.

Lynda La Plante never disappoints. Here, we meet again with Detective Anna Travis, now a Di, as she investigates an unsolved case of the disappearance of a young girl 5 years ago. It is believed that the girl was murdered but without a body and few leads the case runs cold. Now, five years later, Anna is given the task of revisiting the case. Her meticulous attention to detail soon opens up new possibilities. There are many twists and turns as Anna tries to get to the truth. A great read.

This is not the best crime novel Lynda la Plante has written, was to me a bit slow and I even wondered if it was ghost written. the next novel "Blind Fury" was a lot better and in away you could easily miss out "Silent Scream"

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than books 3 & 4 but........

Having read the 4 previous books I found this one better that books 3 & 4 but still didn’t live up to books 1 & 2. It is difficult to find much to like about Anna and increasingly empathise with the secondary characters in the team. As a huge fan of female police procedurals, it’s hugely disappointing that i struggle to find any redeeming qualities that enable me to really get behind her as she just comes across as arrogant, spoiled and self-serving.

I love the stories including Anna Travis and Langston but especially not only do you feel you know the characters inside and out, but it's fascinating reading how much work goes into solving a murder and I love the forensic detail, everything you could wish for and more, can't put the book down but now I have finished this 1, time to download more, but wish I had bought them in a better order, everyone is brilliant, excellent read, I can't put it down as I try to work the killer out myself, brilliant work by lynda La plante and her characters Anna Travis and Langston, will be reading all of them

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring with no spark

This is the fourth Lynda La Plante book I have read and unlike the others I was very disappointed in this book. The book is poorly written with a boring storyline, and I agree with the previous review that I wonder if it was only published because it was Lynda La Plante? I found myself skimming the book to get to an interesting bit (which never arrived). I could not muster any interest in the characters or storyline and had to force myself to finish it. Definitely not the standard of writing I expect from this author.

This book was purchased as a used book the description was good, however it wasn’t good the spine was crushed and I Would have described it as poor quality really.
The actually read was great though, loving the series.
